I've found an excellent podcast series about how online companies use your data. The second episode of the new season is all about how social media giants gather data to keep you engaged, enraged and staying in their apps looking at ads.
It's presented in a pleasantly approachable way. The fediverse is mentioned (Flipboard), along with a new platform I haven't heard of, Small Town and the idea of the Pluriverse.

Hi Ernest - hope everything is going well and that you are in good health.
Many of us on #kbin have been unable to log on or view content for about a week now. Have you identified the problem and made a plan to restore the site?
I also want to thank you for all your hard work. Personally, Kbin is my preferred #fediverse platform. I can’t imagine how much work goes into keeping it running.
"Remember! If you only signed up to hear when this feature is available, or you're wondering what ActivityPub even is: This probably is not the newsletter for you. This is a behind-the-scenes, engineering-heavy, somewhat-deranged build log by the team who are working on it." And I love it. #Fediversehttps://werd.io/2024/what-if-we-worked-together
