My desktop computer is 10 years old, and the CPU just isn't up to it anymore. I don't want a gaming system, but I don't want a overprices bottom of the range tat either.
I need something that will run #Debian, drive a 4K screen, be fine for editing pictures in #gimp, and doesn't need much local storage, that's what 1Gig #Ethernet and #NFSv4 is for.
Some of the small form factor PCs looks sensible, e.g. Bee-Link. Suggestions?
Ethernet lesson 2 for the day. Kinking solid CAT6 most certainly will break conductors. Luckily, this was at the end of the run next to the wall. #Ethernet
Reconnecting my office with Ethernet, and find one of the Ethernet cables I was using labeled "ROUTER TO SWITCH" has only pins 1,2,3 and 6 connected. 🙃
The new patch cables I ordered apparently are long overdue.
(Appears this is a 10BASE-T or Fast Ethernet cable, LOL)
Yup, we used only 2 pairs back then, and wired the modular plugs so that circuits wouldn't blow when they got accidentally plugged into office telco equipment. I remember wiring and crimping a few of those...
@jimmyb On Apple stuff make sure to turn off the private addressing option. Otherwise they use made-up MAC addresses that aren’t even identifiable as belonging to an Apple device. Could account for some or all of it.
EDIT: They are all spoken for. The ethernet card is spoken for.
More #Newton accessories. PC cards, #free to a good home! 2 and 32 meg flash cards, Dell crosswords, 28.8 modem, and 10 mbps #ethernet card with dongle. #RetroComputing#Game#Apple#ethernet
I learnt something about serial connections the other day.
I want to make it so my TV automatically turns on and off with my HTPC. Since almost no desktop GPU supports HDMI-CEC I needed to look for another solution. Turns out the TV has a fully documented serial interface which allows me to control it, so I bought an FTDI usb to serial adapter.
Unfortunately, both the TV and the adapter have male connectors (pins) so I bought a gender changer as well.
Turns out, serial is kind of a mix between USB and Ethernet. Most of the time, it was used to connect a PC to a modem. But in my case the TV counts as a second PC. And if you want to connect a PC to another PC via serial, then you need a special crossed over "null modem" cable. So yeah, I ordered one now.
The linked article is an excellent primer around Ethernet in the modern era.
The only thing I could add on the basics side, is why Ethernet is actually a twisted pair of cables. The twist alleviates the possibility of EMI (electromagnetic interference) inf ...continues
