I would not doubt for a second that Trump even if found guilty in his NY case won’t serve any jail time what-so-ever. It’s just the way it goes when it comes to him for some bizarre reason. #USPolitics

@gedeonm Honestly I bet people are afraid to bring meaningful consequences down on him because of what his nutty-but-well-armed fan base might do in retaliation.

I was a little surprised to hear “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” by The Darkness playing on a pop/top40 radio station. Maybe it’s getting attention for being in the movie The Fall Guy. But I don’t think it was ‘popular’ even when it was new.

Mother’s Day card mailed from NC to SC on May 3rd hasn’t arrived in time for the holiday. Can we PLEASE get rid of DeJoy? For the love of god, please. 🤬

First, it’s great that @MichaelWhelan is on Mastodon. What an amazing artist.

Second, his recent post featured a spherical alien that I instantly recognized from my childhood. https://mastodon.art/@MichaelWhelan/112428886103083708

It’s from this book, published in 1980, which had a cover image that is also burned into my brain.

@siracusa Wow, I’ve never seen this before but I’m sure I would have been all over it as a kid.

Have you replaced some or all of your passwords with pass keys yet?

dmnelson,
@dmnelson@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm Depends on how you define “replace”… I’ve set up passkeys every opportunity I get, but few if any of them eliminate your password, and it just ends up being an alternate way to sign in.

In the world of Apple Silicon, the M series chips are positioned as Mac hardware that filtered down to the mid-to-high-end iPads.

Introducing the M4 on iPad first kind of breaks that illusion. The SOCs are all so closely related anyway, it seems kind of arbitrary that some have an A prefix while others have M.

While they’re at it they could call the next iPhone chip the M4 Mini, M4 Lite, something like that. They won’t if for no other reason than marketing. But it’s interesting to think about.

@siracusa Is this the first time they’ve binned Apple chips in such a way that you can get an odd number of CPU cores?

I know you could get 7 vs. 8 GPU on the M1 Air, for example. But I don’t remember seeing odd CPU core counts.

I’ve really been enjoying Star Trek: The Next Generation so far. It’s kind of tough putting into words exactly why. Sometimes you just vibe with something so much and that’s enough to love it. 😊

Our students are on Gmail. Staff are on-prem (for now.)

Barracuda adds an “external sender” warning to student mail, so I want to bypass it via an outbound gateway in Google. <https://support.google.com/a/answer/178333>

I can programmatically fetch Google’s netblocks from _spf.google.com

What's the best approach to keeping those up-to-date in Postfix or Sendmail list of permitted relay hosts?

I can kludge something together but wondering if anyone already did it and has a recommendation.

tl;dr Currently Google Workspace email from students to staff hit our Barracuda because that’s our MX record. I want to direct it straight to one of our on-prem mail servers instead to avoid the “external sender” banner. Google has lots of networks mail could come from. Looking for best way to keep relay rules up-to-date.

If you’re wondering where I decided to stop paying attention, it was where you typed “USians” instead of “Americans”.

And I’m Canadian.

dmnelson,
@dmnelson@mastodon.social avatar

@tantramar I always have to pause and think about this one. I read it as a mashup of “USA” and “Asians”, so I at first glance I think it’s a cutesy way of saying Asian-Americans. 🤷

I’m sure you’ve heard this enough, but I can’t help but pause and say, no @siracusa, regardless of how good a programmer you are, you will never convince me that is the correct answer.

The job you were best at was, without a doubt, OS reviewer. There has never been and likely will never be another of your caliber.

Absolutely the GOAT.

Respectfully.

dmnelson,
@dmnelson@mastodon.social avatar

@siracusa @NateBarham I don’t know what got me on this train of thought but I was actually contemplating this as an Ask ATP question for John the other day: Now that you’re free of a jobby-job, if Ars approached you about writing OS reviews again would you do it?💡🤔
