#News#Media#Journalism#DigitalMedia#SocialMedia#Participation: "Digital media are often praised for having offered new ways to participate with news. But how has participation with news changed in recent years? A pre-registered analysis of survey data from 2015 to 2022 in 46 countries (N = 577,859) shows that participation with news has declined. This decrease is observed in most countries and for most forms of participation, including liking, sharing, commenting on news on social media and talking about the news offline. The only form of participation that has increased is news sharing via private messaging apps. Overall, participation with news was higher among younger people, the university-educated, those with high interest in news and those with low trust in news. Over time, participation has declined more for those with lower trust in news, those without a bachelor’s degree and for women. Within countries, increases in political polarization were associated with lower participation."
We need to talk about digital ownership #oldailyhttps://www.downes.ca/post/76246 As Dan Gillmor says, this is a "terrifically nuanced piece" on the subject of ownership of data and digital media.
@oldaily Was going to recommend this article https://www.citationneeded.news/we-need-to-talk-about-digital-ownership on digital ownership to Stephen Downes' Online Learning Daily, but not surprisingly he found it immediately. Academic journalist Dan Gillmor is my friend IRL, residing mostly in this Kansai region around Osaka, so I am fortunate to be able to discuss such things with him and his Japanese journalist wife.
Regarding digital ownership, I cannot think of any way that having my Website https://japanned.hcommons.org/ at the publicly-funded Humanities Commons @hello infringes upon rights I would like to claim as a creator, and I can only hope that their data remains available indefinitely, such as to my 3/4 Japanese infant granddaughter when she grows up.
"For longtime Instagram users, no longer having audio on their older videos could be a big loss. Part of why people post on Instagram is to preserve moments in time, and audio is often a huge part of what might make a video special or memorable."
I feel like relying on Instagram or Facebook to archive memories is a really bad idea 😬 :facebook: :insta:
Why India’s new draft broadcast bill has raised fears of censorship and press suppression
The draft broadcast bill covers OTT platforms as well as all digital news media publishers. Experts warn that the bill will have a chilling effect on speech.
This is why I still buy Blu-rays when I actually want to buy a show or movie. Maybe enough people will get mad enough we'll see some legislation put in place to ensure certain rights for digital purchases
This is some old art of mine that I remember doing on my phone in #ibispaintx ! This is something I was proud of, for doing with my finger, honestly...
I’m happy with how it turned out! :blobcatadorable: :blobcatadorable: :blobcatmeltthumbsup: :blobcatshy: :blobcatkissheart: :blobcatkissheart: :blobcatgoogly2:
I am a #DigitalMedia and #IT#teacher at a small public high school in #Appalachian#Ohio. My wife and I have been married for 30+ years and have three grown children.
Worker/artist owned cooperative — with distribution, to tell their own stories. Images below.
Workers, writers, and artists start a cooperative production company
They license/option existing stories to the company (which they own together!) and put stories on a website where audiences can access them
Stories can be scripts, treatments, readings, storyboards — it's great material in those formats, and people will dive into those stories just the same
Share the website (distribution!) with followings, along with a way to subscribe
You now have a worker/writer/artist owned cooperative, with distribution, stories, and an audience!
More details in the images below, made as a guide/resource to be helpful.
It's time for a fresh #Introduction with more folks coming into the #Fediverse! Welcome; do make yourself at home. Oh, me? I’m a #queer#punk#DIY media activist with a twenty year history of writing for #newspapers, #zines, and websites, as well as making guerrilla #documentaries, all with a focus on #SocialJustice, holding screenings and running other events and initiatives in different parts of the world. I'm an unpaid carer for a partner with #LongCovid and we live together in #SocialHousing in #Sheffield, UK. I'm a member of #Acorn#RentersUnion as well as the #IWW. I continue to write while working in #DigitalMedia and #technology for #NonProfit organisations, but still live in poverty and my principle of "do no harm, take no shit" has cost me many connections and opportunities for income over the years, so suffice to say I welcome work offers, especially for worthwhile causes, as well as tips! For more info and links, check my profile. Thanks for reading!
Ideally, I'm looking for something full-time, but I'm open to consider contract and freelance opportunities. I wish to remain in #Halifax (Canada), so I'm looking for something on-site in the HRM, or hybrid and remote work that I can do from home.
