Mä en oo tainnut puhua kauheasti mun puheviasta. Avaan vähän taustoja.

Mä aloitin puheterapian ennen kouluikää ja puheterapia jatkui aina sihen asti kun täytin 17 vuotta. Eli yli 10 vuotta puheterapiaa joka viikko. Joskus olin Oulun yliopistossa puheterapeutin tutkittavana. Teimme todella paljon huuliltalukuharjoituksia ja harjoiteltiin tiettyjen kirjainten äänentuottoa. Ongelmia tuotti erityisesti nämä kirjaimet: S, ST, TS, SK, KS. Oikeastaan kaikki missä on S-kirjain, on mulle vaikea. Vaikka olen harjoitellut ihan helkkaristi niin en vieläkään pysty täysin tekemään tuota oikein. Harjoitukset eivät kuitenkaan täysin turhia olleet. Hyödyin käsittämättömän paljon huuliltalukutaidosta. Tämä taito tosin jää näön menetyksen myötä pois aikanaan.

PS. Oralismi ja huuliltalukutaito eivät ole kaksi täysin samaa asiaa, koitetaan pitää nämä erillään. 👍

Vähemmistöstressi vähemmistön sisällä

Kuurosokeana henkilönä olen kuurojen ja näkövammaisten sisällä vähemmistöä. Stressiä on aiheuttanut yhteenkuulumattomuuden tunne.

S-kaupat kotiinkuljetuspalvelu

Mä oon saanut viime aikoina tosi hyvää asiakaspalvelua äSSältä, kun ne työntekijät ovat hienosti ottaneet kuuron asiakkaan huomioon. Olen lisännyt aina tilauksen lisätietoihin, et 'Tilaaja on kuuro, yhteydenotto viestitse.'. Ja tätä pyyntöä on toteutettu joka kerta.

The Mind korttipeli ja kuuro pelaaja

Mä väitän et tämä peli ei ihan sovellu meille kuuroille. Ei maha mittää omalle naamalle, kun sitä on niin helppo lukea kuin avointa kirjaa, jossa teksti on capslockilla ja se näkyy kauas. 😅 😅

I am building a prototype of a sign training app to learn . My biggest problem is finding a suitable name. Most of the catchy ones are already used. So I decided now to use the name of a cuddly toy as an acronym. LISA or LiSA

Any other suggestions?

(The app could be used for other languages, too.)

My husband just gave me a lecture on self advocacy. I apologized for reminding him that yelling at me from upstairs doesn't really work for me (common misunderstanding: Deaf and Hard of Hearing people don't need volume - we need clarity, which is different).

"Don't apologize," he said. "You have every right to ask for clear communication. Those of us who love you, want to accommodate you. And those who don't? Fuck 'em."

Seriously made me a bit teary eyed.

Recently I’ve been reading more about the emotional side of #hearing loss.

I assumed that because I was born moderately #deaf that I hadn’t experienced loss in the ‘emotional’ sense, because I’d never known any different.

But I now see how hard I have been on myself and how my lack of hearing really dented my confidence as a child, teenager and young person in work.

Whether your deafness is recent or lifelong it’s ok to acknowledge the frustration and isolation

At a presentation by a Deaf speaker, Sami.

She says good lip-readers only catch about 30% of what's being spoken.

Movies have misled me to believe lip-readers can recognize almost every word by watching people speak.

In the talk, yesterday, speaker Sami mentioned that, locally, Deaf people use most of the signs you can learn on YouTube.

❔Most❔ Wait a minute, right?

It turns out there are regional sign-language variations, similar to spoken accents, which she called "regional identity".

and , who work with people. Let me put it to you straight. You don't know shit about the disabled experience. No matter how many degrees you have. No matter how many classes you've taken or how many books you've read, acting like you do automatically makes you the asshole. Until you're , or in a , or , or in or even have mental disabilities like crippling or or anything that can be mentioned, you can't say you know what you're doing and how to help when you don't so actually take the time to listen to the people you are sworn to take care of under oath and show some human empathy and because you're doctors you're held to the highest standard. There is no excuse as a doctor not to believe your people and not to do everything within your power, even if you have to bend the rules slightly to make sure your patients get taken care of to the highest degree and anything below that and you've failed.

What do I want to read more of this year?

I want more #Deaf #horror.
I want more #trans and #nonbinary horror.
I want more freaky #tooth horror...

Welp. I guess I'd better get on with writing it then! 😂

(Also, any recommendations for the above appreciated.)

So I finally managed to watch #CODA tonight. Friends and colleagues had told me I’d love it. I did, but not because I’m #deaf.

It’s depicts an experience so different to my own that I felt almost like a hearing person watching it. I’m not #Deaf, I’m deaf. My parents and brothers are hearing. I was always just slightly out of sync.

I loved the humour, love and sexiness of the Deaf characters though - refreshing!

But it made me think about my own kids. They have to feel free to fly the nest.

Are there good resources for , , or otherwise hams? I'm not just talking about during the test -- though that's good to know too -- but actual for operation?

Think, those things that let you feel tactilely, I'm not sure what they're called. Also things that blink CW, radios that talk or are easy to attach labels too, etc? You get the idea.
