#Chromium (and #Chrome) begins phasing-out Manifest v2.

https://blog.chromium.org/2024/05/manifest-v2-phase-out-begins.html

This means, among other things, that uBlock Origin is about to be disabled in Chrome. Google will choose a different extension to recommend but it can not be as effective as #uBlock Origin.

Following #Google's example, may I instead recommend you switch to #Firefox.

Firefox will continue to support Manifest v2, and consequently uBlock Origin and other extensions that can not be implemented with Manifest v3.

Happy browsing.

Hoorrray!

WTF is KHTML?

Chances are you are kind of using it, because and rendering engines are all forked from this open-source project originally intented for the browser of the KDE window environment.

That basically makes , , , and (and possibly others) all siblings.

KHTML is literally the mother of all browsers.

A lot of people seem to have opinions on browser cores.

We built one. From scratch. We know what it takes to do, also knowing that big tech does its best to create incompatibilities.

Presto was, IMHO, the best browser engine, but that was more than 10 years ago. I wish development had not been halted and it would not have been halted if I had had anything to say about it.

Now we build Vivaldi on Chromium and we do feel it was the best we could do. We can build a great browser based on Chromium. I hope you are all enjoying Vivaldi. If you have not tried it, please do.

How to block on

Block ads on the web: Firefox + uBlock Origin.

A must have, if you want to browse the web without ads, trackers, malware and more. There are other browsers you could use, but with , you can install add-ons to help you mitigate all the tracking and ads. You can even install desktop only add-ons now, and supporting a engine which is not (controlled by Google) like every other major browser.

There are multiple forks available on the F-droid if you don't want to use plain firefox. This works on desktop too, I recommend .

Block ads on any app with: .

My favorite way of blocking ads, you have control over which domain the app can connect. It works like a VPN, but it does not make any outgoing connection. The bad thing is, if you want to use an actual , you can't have both at the same time and you need to disable your custom DNS.

I recommend to enable in settings > advanced options > block system apps, and individual domains too. When you open the app for the first time, it asks you if you want to block essential request for the apps to work, I recommend to enable this if you don't want apps breaking.

You android vendor may be killing the app, for this reason is necessary to add the app in the list of apps not be optimized by the system. If this issue keeps happening follow the guide from dontkillmyapp.com (advanced)

Official website: TrackerControl.org

Set a custom in the settings.

A DNS works like a translator, computers are good with numbers, but we are not good at memorizing long numbers. Computers communicate with each other using the Internet Protocol (IP), which are pure numbers. For example, your instance is 104.26.8.209 but is easier to us just type lemmy.world.

A DNS is like a table where it has a relationship between keys pointing lemmy.world to 104.26.8.209, so your computer knows where is the computer is trying to connect.

Let's imagine an app is trying to connect to "https://ads-from.company.com", if you are using a DNS which blocks known domain ads it will redirect that request to "0.0.0.0" which is like sending it to a black hole. There are multiple DNS available, which different purposes, for ads, malware, porn, gambling, etc.

VPN has a guide in how to use their DNS for multiple devices.

Alternative front-ends.

Have in mind that these are not full bulletproof protections, one may work better than the other, and can break from time to time. With popular services with ads, like social media, you could use alternative front-ends to their official client or website.

Here is a list of alternative front-ends and an add-on to automatically redirect to them, you have to use it with a browser and you can add as a shortcut to the home screen, better if it works like a https://libredirect.github.io

Alternative apps

  1. YouTube: NewPipe, LibreTube, NewPipe x SponsorBlock
  2. Twitter: Squawker
  3. YouTube Music: Harmony Music
  4. Twitch: Xtra, Twire

So and have finally reached 114 version in Linux in stable channel, which is the first one to follow xdg-desktop-portal's system theme preference, so it means i just change theme in system settings in and boom, every website which uses CSS's prefers-color-scheme property or has a setting to use 'system theme' automatically goes to dark or light without need of any extension like Dark Reader. So, finally Chromium is again at par with Firefox, for me.

🇺🇸 The Better /kbin update to version 2.1.1 has already landed in the extension stores!
It adds a toggle switch to enable and disable automatic theme changes to the pop-up. Apart from that, the Polish translation in the options has been improved, the file structure has been gently changed, and (FINALLY!) a bug has been fixed, which caused Better /kbin options to open every time the extension was updated (and in some browsers - even every time it was launched). This problem had been present since early versions of the extension, but the source of the problem could not be found - finally, it worked!
If you miss something in the extension or have some interesting ideas about it - reply to this post :)

🇵🇱 Aktualizacja Better /kbin do wersji 2.1.1 już wylądowała w sklepach z rozszerzeniami!
Dodaje ona przełącznik włączający i wyłączający automatyczną zmianę motywu do pop-up'u.
Jeżeli czegoś Wam brakuje w rozszerzeniu albo macie jakieś ciekawe pomysły odnośnie do niego - piszcie :)

As much as I like and , it's baffling to me that its features is terrible. Built-in screen readers cannot read and website text well, and its default is so bad its voice is terrible (enough that those how have both vision and auditory issues may give up), and accessibility features are still lacking, no accessibility features for colorblind people as if they don't even exist, CLI and most of its defaults aren't friendly for those with disabilities,...

And before saying that FOSS softwares usually lack accessibility features due to their natures of voluntary and community-funded softwares, sorry, you can't excuse or rationalize that a software is bad, it's just bad. How can some people who can have patience to fix their own softwares that other has done before them cannot be as enthuiastic to improve Linux and accessibility???

PSA to everyone to not use brave browser @brave, the CEO of Brave Software is bigoted (donated to anti-lgbtqia+ organizations trying to ban gay marriage in the past and still has never addressed it or apologized) and was also against the Covid Lockdowns and is anti-vax. Using brave browser contributes to oppression of LGBTQIA+ ppl and contributes to brave software financially through ads and other means.

I recommend anyone still using brave browser to switch to ungoogled-chromium as a non-bigoted degoogled chromium-based browser alternative. @floccus is a good browser extension to use on ungoogled-chromium to sync your bookmarks.
