New weather & climate office hours: 06/07/2024 @ 10am PT. Topics: widespread & prolonged Western heatwave, and what it portends for summer/autumn. Plus: further thoughts on recent studies diagnosing causes of ongoing record global warmth. #CAwx#CAfirehttps://www.youtube.com/live/0tY_Mg0ZvIE
Widespread major heat, highly unusual for early June, will expand across most of Western U.S. in coming days (minus some coastal areas). Record breaking high temps most likely Thu and Fri, but may persist in some areas for over a week. #CAwx#NVwx#ORwx#WAwx#IDwx [1/2]
In addition to record daytime warmth in some areas, even more locations will record-breaking overnight warmth, with widespread "record high minimum" temperatures during this prolonged event, including at higher elevations. #CAwx#NVwx#ORwx#WAwx#IDwx [2/2]
As we already have wildfires going in CA and are set to have scorcher weather Tues - Thu, let me remind folks that not only are N95 masks good for keeping from getting/giving COVID, but also good for filtering smoke from wildfires.
Good to have a supply on hand and to be wearing one.

Map shows MODIS and VIIRS satellite heat detections. Data is not real time and locations are only approximate. For more info open the map and see 2 links upper left corner.
Never rely on any map or anything you see online to ignore an order to evacuate. The fire officials have information that you do not. #CAFire#CAwx#SanJoaquinCounty
New Weather West post: Complex weather pattern to bring notable early-season heatwave across West, including parts of California! Also: how might the PacNW atmospheric river this weekend contribute to the heatwave the following week? #CAwx#CAfirehttps://weatherwest.com/archives/40562
Make sure you're assessing your situation: What would you do if power went out due to the utility shutting it off to reduce fire risk or due to too many people using the grid at the same time? Need to replace batteries? Have enough ice packs on hand? What's your emergency plan, esp if there's a fire & you have to evacuate during a heat wave?
If you're abled, ask disabled friends if they'd like help and what form they want that help to take in an emergency.
In case there ends up being a wildfire during a heatwave or there's another natural disaster that affects you as a disabled person, The Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies has a hotline you should put in your phonebook.
New YouTube office hour: 30 min pop-up session @ 11am PT on Fri, 5/31/2024. Topic: significant western U.S. heatwave in early June, including very complex meteorological pattern and considerable uncertainties involved in just how hot it will get. #CAwxhttps://www.youtube.com/live/PKnTegVkSWU
Prepare for rising heat ahead of time. Check batteries for items you need in case there are planned shut-offs by utilities. Replace those that are dying or dead. Keep rechargeables charged. Freeze bottled water so you have cold water available if power goes out. Repair or replace fans you need.
Think through your needs when it gets hot, including if the power goes out. Prepare now.
