#Affinity has been purchased by (deep breath) Canva (breathbreathbreath) and I don't know what to feel about this, but not that I'm happy, that for sure. Anyway, here is the Affinity's statement and FAQ about it.
It's interesting that with #affinity being acquired by #canva users respond with their hope that it doesn't now enshitify.
And I kind of feel: People know. They know that these companies are unsafe stewards of their work tools. But invest in that system regardless.
Not sure how to convince people to invest in open source instead so this kind of thing can't happen. Not just hope won't, but structurally can't happen.
Canva acquires Serif’s Affinity Suite, and I can’t help feeling doom about this.
I’ve worked with Canva in the past and they were good people, but this feels like a move towards subscriptions. I guess that’s kind of inevitable these days anyway, but being bought out often signals the end. I love the Affinity suite and I hope I’m wrong.
@jonhicks@patrick_h_lauke I really hope you are wrong about it, but I am suspecting the same eventually. Serif's business model is what attracted me to this company in the first place. I love their product so much and use it daily since 2015. I blogged about it 9 years ago (wow, time flies 🚀)
Oh my, there goes another independent publisher in the graphics space, and a real contender. Let us hope they will act as a good custodian of a stellar graphics suite. #Affinityhttps://mstdn.ca/@bowreality/112158905577789202
Affinity has been bought by Canva, to compete with Adobe.
It was of course a matter of time before Affinity would outgrow its status of sympathetic small-scale Adobe alternative, and be sold for large proceeds.
Canva is into AI. Hopefully Affinity will get some useful AI-powered image processing tools, like upscalers and denoisers, but Canva will probably add generative shit and introduce subscriptions sooner or later.
Photoscape X, a surprisingly versatile image editor and viewer. I use it a lot. It's free, and you can support the developer with a useful in-app purchase:
I have scanned a lot of old black and white photos and now I want to restore some of them with #affinity / #affinityphoto.
Of course #affinity is mainly focused on color images. Does anyone know of a plugin that is particularly suitable for processing old black and white images?
I’ve been increasingly getting the feeling that #Adobe really doesn’t care about improving it’s products for professionals, and this pop-up when I launched Photoshop for the first time in a while feels like the most blatant demonstration of that.
Adobe wants their tools to be everything for everyone, but increasingly they feel like the worst solution for any given user. They’re just coasting on being the industry default.
#Affinity clearly isn’t a great choice for someone who just wants to spruce up a profile picture - and that’s the point.#Photoshop shouldn’t be the tool for that either! The current model #Adobe is pushing serves all of us more poorly.
Who’s the priority? (Hint: Adobe is publicly traded, so it’s not the users)
The essence of a fictive, chosen, or voluntary kinship is rooted in a profound sense of connection. This connection isn't always immediately recognized or mutual, but it's never entirely unfamiliar or one-sided...
#Affinity#Designer is currently available for 45 instead of 75 bucks and version 2.3 now comes with a spiral tool. Congratulations!
Somehow I can't remember when that function was added to Inkscape, can you?
Maybe that's because V0.45 already got it built in? However, congrats Serif for catching up.

I'd forgotten how good #affinity photo/designer/publisher was. I bought them all last year in the Black Friday sale but for some reason kept using PS Elements. Now, thanks to a bug in PSE on macOS Sonoma, and Adobe's fix being 'just upgrade to 2024 for £100' I have deleted PS and gone all in with Affinity. It's very good!
To companies like #Serif
Instead of complaining and making excuses on why you can't make a Linux version, hire #Linux experts from the #Fediverse. You know, you can use the technology and employ the people who want to improve the world.
@bynkii As much as I like the #Affinity products for my own projects, no way my office is replacing #Adobe.
We us a complete editorial workflow solution. This means a K4 server and InDesign and InCopy. People need to work together and a structured workflow enforced by a server. I can replace K4 with something else, but not ID.
When hiring people we need people trained in the software. Makes anything but ID difficult.
Even for paid private projects I am requested to work in ID.
