@davidzipper @990000 I’m on a bulletin board for Subaru Gen 5 Subaru Impreza owners. Occasionally people discuss how to make their cars louder. I have so far refrained on how I plan on taking out their cars with RPGs if they drive down my street.

@stux While they are a striking fashion statement best to remove. Either slowly by yourself or have a friend rip them off quickly.

TODAY IS THE DAY.

We're in Washington now and arrive in this afternoon. 🇨🇦

Our new home.

It's surreal, scary, wonderful.

My posting will be light until we're settled in a little.

Thank you for all your amazing replies and good wishes. I read them all, but can't reply back.

Big hugs to all of you. 🥰

paulc,
@paulc@mstdn.social avatar

@GottaLaff May you have a kind and cooperative customs official.

When I moved to Canada for school they refused to let me cross the border based on a technicality in my acceptance letter. I had to take the bus from Washington State to Vancouver and then get a letter from the school and bring it to customs. The next customs officer was very nice and I sailed through that 2nd time.

Another time I was with a professor who was smuggling some alcohol into Canada at an obscure border crossing

My child just sent me a text about a book by a white guy named Sam Forster who said the following:

"Last summer, I disguised myself as a Black man and traveled throughout the United States to document how racism persists in American society.

Writing Seven Shoulders was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done as a journalist.”

Ummm, WHAT???

paulc,
@paulc@mstdn.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 Reminds me of Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin from 1961. Griffin describes how he took skin darkening medication and that many friends did not recognize him.

Ray Sprigle did this a decade earlier.

While Wikipedia said he received very few hoslite letters, the hostility from White people made him relocate from Texas to Mexico. He was assulted by white men in 1964.

I don't think we need a remake in 2024. It is better to support Black voices.

paulc,
@paulc@mstdn.social avatar

@StillIRise1963
It shows a continuing weakness of the main stream publishing world, that is it easier for white person to be published than a black person.

Reminds me of able bodied people getting limited insights by wearing devices to give themselves disabilities which they take off by the end of the day. I know disabled people who support this while knowing the limitations.

@hotdogsladies @siracusa You story of bringing tools with you all of the time, such as Merlin bringing a Leatherman, reminds me of quirk of my father’s.

The family was at a restaurant and I noticed a knife sticking out of his shirt pocket. He said it was a grapefruit knife and that he always had it with him in case there was grapefruit. There was so many things wrong with this, plus it was a pearing knife, not a grapefruit knife. I took it from him.

My father was in his 80s.

Russian media report that Ivan Popov, ex-commander of the Russian 58th army, has been arrested.

He is accused of fraud of over 100 million rubles.

Previously, Popov led the Russian army in Zaporizhzhia direction. In the summer of 2023, he was removed as commander. Prior to that, he strongly criticized the Russian leadership in 2023 and threatened to bring all these problems directly to Putin.

I am confident that this fate will soon befall other Russian generals as well.

@Free_Press I wonder if corruption is normally approved but Putin can use the accusation of corruption when is disproves of someone. The corruption might make you wealthy but it makes you more vulnerable to Putin's whims.

Hitchhiked across the country wearing a dress with his beard (that took guts). Drove cross country in a van with friends with “Faggots Against Fascism” painted on the sides. Takes super guts to do that in the American south in the 70s.

    I'm going to ramble a bit, but it will hopefully come around to something. When I was growing up, I read a lot of older historical book series, a big one would be the Little House On The Prairie series. While I really enjoyed it, there are some very obviously negative portrayals of Native Americans and African Americans. I remember being angry about it as a kid, and my Dad telling me, that part of learning about history is that we have to acknowledge the people we were, and still are. But because Little House on the Prairie is only semi-autobiographical, I still have mixed feelings about this. I do think they are well written books by a female author, an interesting perspective on early American life, and as an adult I can see and acknowledge the issues with the text. If we try to get rid of every author with racist ideas there wouldn't be much left to read from the 20th Century, and it also feels like being dishonest about who we are. So, I'm very mixed, how do you all feel about it? Do you think children can handle books with racial issues like this if it's explained to them? What is our responsibility here?

    paulc,
    @paulc@mstdn.social avatar

    @RickiTarr it also perpetuates the myth of the small farmer. The Ingels family never made a profit on farming and depended on acquiring land stolen from aborigines.

My cat takes more pills a day than me and I learned that missing even a single set of pills with result in a seizure. I have a good cat sitter but I can’t consider being away from home more than 2 nights anymore.

    @mattotcha As a member of a few dementia caregiving communities I've heard a number of stories where the loved one with dementia shows some lucidity shortly before death. Not necessarily pre-dementia behavior but more lucidity than shown for some time.

    It is normal during the disease for people with dementia to have good days. These are probably from the brain creating new neural pathways that restore some function. But since dementia is progressive these improvements are often soon lost.
