Started at 5/31 11am ET. We’ll see how fast this baby moves on a 12yo #MacMini using #ProtonVPN & gigabit #fios through a #glinet#AXT1800 router, a CAT6-connected AP, a #MoCA -connected AP, & finally CAT6. It’s a circuitous route, I know, but these are the limitations of a 74yo house.
FWIW speeds right now are slower than usual: 174 Mbps down, 178 up. Usually in the 500-600 range. Maybe it’s the age of the #Mac, or I’m splitting between the #Ente & speed test?
@alexhammy@ente so far so good, but I have a lot of sorting and tagging ahead of me. I’m looking forward to the facial recognition feature being rolled out.
One thing I wish you could do - and maybe I’m just not doing it right - is select all or drag to select many; right now it’s a per-click deal which is insane for thousands of files.
This evening I thought I'd take a quick look at Microsofts new #aspire offering, a stack for developing cloud-ready applications.
I was concerned that my decision to go all in on #mac and use #jetbrains#rider instead of Visual Studio was about to come home to roost but am happy to report that this was not the case.
I'm happily working through the tutorials and walkthroughs using #rider on a #macbook_pro.
Watch out if you use iTerm2 on a mac. The latest version (3.5.x) integrates OpenAI/ChatGPT. It looks like you have to set keys to use it, but I don't want it even in the mix so I'm sticking with the 3.4.x release.
@TheIdOfAlan and that's why I've been using #kitty for the longest time now as my default terminal emulator... 😎
Still, it's good to spread awareness of this, as many end users may not even notice that change until it's installed and running as a new memory chugging daemon! 😅🫠
For a few weeks now, I've been using VidHub as a video player on my iPad and MacBook.
I was actually looking for an alternative to Infuse; I thought its yearly subscription was unnecessarily expensive. While browsing, I came across this app:
@Eghone I'm comparing lifetime licenses. I'd rather get an open source version and donate to them, and while I was searching for it I stumbled upon this one.
In my country, lifetime licenses are like this : For Infuse: 4000 TRL ($125) lifetime , versus 499 TRL ($15) lifetime of VidHub, so it's almost 10x more expensive, so nah.
Bean - A Free, Lightweight Word Processor https://apps.louplummer.lol/post/bean-a-free-lightweight-word-processor For years, Bean, a free word processor for macOS has been my go-to when I needed to create a document with rich text, tables and images. Weighing in at only 8MB, it starts instantly and places little demands on even my wife's 10-year-old machine. It reminds me of Microsoft's WordPad... #Mac Apps
FOSS - ensuring even new hardware stays in use when vendor-support eventually ends!
Whether or not you install GNU/Linux on it today, your new #Mac will eventually lose #Apple support. Thanks to the impressive work of #Asahi#Linux project (@AsahiLinux), it will not need to end up in the landfill once it does.
FreeTube - Maybe the Most Underrated App https://apps.louplummer.lol/post/freetube-maybe-the-most-underrated-app YouTube in undeniably a force in the modern world. My 77-year-old father watches it daily as does my four-year old granddaughter. If you watch YouTube on a PC running macOS, Windows or Linux, I suggest you do it with FreeTube. FreeTube is a privacy lover's dream, using no trackers and... #Mac Apps
I am happy that now my 2013 Trashcan #Mac Pro sleeps correctly with Open Core Legacy Patcher on latest Sonoma (otherwise unsupported). Goes to 100w+ as soon as a wake it up but it goes back to 8w when sleeping.
That’s enough to maintain it alive. I don’t use it often but I want it to survive humidity.
Ok, hear me out - OS-LYMPICS. Let's take #Mac, #Windows and #Linux, and identify a number of operational concepts - efficiency, security, breadth of app base, hardware compatibility, literally anything else. Elect guru squads - MacOS team, Linux team, and.. me. A podcast, or a twitch session, or something. And then each team "competes" to show off the capabilities of their OS versus each operational concept so that otherwise clueless people can get a fucking clue. HOW FUN, amirite?
BBEdit - It Doesn't Suck https://apps.louplummer.lol/post/bbedit-it-doesn-t-suck In the world of text editors for the Mac there are lot's of choices. I come to the decision making process as a non-programmer who occasionally does some basic scripting with the help of Ai. Visual Studio Code is the most popular among programmers with an estimated 70% market share.... #Mac Apps
Diese Funktion, mit der Maus vom #Mac einfach auf den Bildschirm vom iPad zu fahren und das zu bedienen ist soooo praktisch! Vor allem, wenn man dann einfach mit der Tastatur des Macs tippen kann.
It's been years since the #Mac machines I've owned can sleep properly. I choose sleep from the 🍎 menu, and the screen blanks and comes right back on as often as not. If I let the screen sleep after a period without using the machine, sometimes I'll return an hour later and find the screen on, and unlocked. Total #security and #power management failure.
Idk who needs to hear this but if you're trying to use port 5000 on your #Mac and it's not working since your last update... It's because AirPlay silently hijacked that port in the Monterey update. You can disable AirPlay in settings to get it back 🥴
