I'm trying to convince a company to use #PWA for their very simple app. The problem is that they want to see an example of a PWA that prompts an install.
I've found a ton of good PWAs (yummly, pinterest, uber) but they either prompt to install their app😱 or just sit there an make me pull down the menu to 'install app'.
Are there any examples that actually PROMPT the user to install? I realize this needs to be done gently. I'm just looking for any example to convince them.
@scottjenson it’s actually discouraged to immediately show a prompt, the reason being that it could be intrusive to a user for example when they’re still on the onboarding process and haven’t even had the chance to get to use the app yet.
As far as I know, the install-event also doesn’t fire on page load, but rather after the user-agent determines that it would be appropriate to prompt for installation. 🤔
@scottjenson that being said, I have also noticed that some of my users don’t realise they have the option to install the app and thus dismiss it after the first use. 🤔
So maybe a banner isn’t that bad of an idea (since you kind of need one on Safari anyway). 😅

@mwl@molly0xfff Yes! And, the beauty of it is that you still can use someone else's platform (MySpace back in the day, Substack or whatever today), but as long as you advertise a domain you own, you can just redirect it later.
Owning a domain is like the digital equivalent of a forwarding address that never expires. Nobody ever has to worry about which town you live in on any given month, because they'll always get to you no matter what.

Quite a few years ago, one of us decided to check how many unique pages were in her browser history. To her surprise, she found that she was visiting a mere 10,000 pages a year. That is, even though the #Web as a whole may host billions of pages, her Web was extremely small. If you are an avid browser, your history may hold quite a few more documents, but the fact remains: individually, we only use a tiny proportion of the information on the Web.
Honestly, the #web is unusable without an adblocker and some form of “tweaks” app these days. Ads are one thing but all these cookie and newsletter banners and autoplay videos. I’m so happy when I find my results on pages like Wikipedia.. #frontend
I haven't paid attention to Netcraft's Web Server Survey, which was once a battlefield between Linux and Microsoft (namely Apache httpd vs Microsoft IIS).
Nginx took the lead from Apache in 2019. However, for the past 3 years Nginx's market share has been on a steady decline, matched by the growth of Cloudflare (10%) and "Other" (25%). Is Amazon AWS lumped with it?
@davidbisset an even bigger issue is that archive.org is not sacred anymore. they are constantly removing things from the wayback machine, to complete the historical scrubbing.
Nothing is more annoying than when a website has broken form validation. Like for example when you paste something and then the pasted data is invalid but if you type it yourself, it's fine. Sometimes, adding and immediately removing a character triggers the validation but sometimes it does not. #web#frontend
Where do you guys get your design inspiration from these days? I’m especially interested in #web and #app design. I used to use Dribbble a lot in the past, but it seems to have shifted towards illustrative content and there’s just a lot to sift through before finding something in my niche. 🤔
Can we please stop making custom dropdown menus that aren't keyboard searchable? It takes eons having to manually scroll through three separate lists of date/month/year instead of just typing out the numbers on my keyboard and pressing "Tab" to switch between the three menus.
