kzimmermann, Updating #FreeBSD to 14.1-RELEASE in the laptop
Kernel and base already updated, now running pkg to finish off the job :)
RL_Dane, (edited ) Hey #FreeBSD peeps,
I'm trying to figure out what GELI stands for. (Just because it's such a cute name, I guess? lol)
I've deduced that it's GEOM_ELI (https://man.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=geli&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=FreeBSD+14.1-RELEASE+and+Ports&arch=default&format=html), but what's ELI?
(Also, I kinda wish #BSD had
man -K
(full text search). I need to write a todo to make my own implementation)[[Update in reply]]
RL_Dane, Ha! I'll post an update to the original if he responds. :D
RL_Dane, Pawel responded :D

Hello:)You are correct „G” stands for GEOM. The rest is to be discovered (it doesn’t stand for Encryption Layer Interface). It’s been twenty years and I still didn’t get the right answer:)

RL_Dane, New(-to-me) laptop is in!
Looking forward to putting it through its paces.
This <$100 thing might be the most performant machine I own. 😆
Also, I've been experimenting a bit with #NomadBSD lately. It's not quite as polished as a Linux distro, but it's mighty nice! (Persistent #FreeBSD-based boot USB image, can do UFS or ZFS and optionally encrypt)
RL_Dane, That's funny, Chewie was my alter ago when I first started getting back into Linux 5 years go (and the Falcon was my ship, er, daily-driver laptop).
RL_Dane, Ha, that would be great. No, it's "just" a Thinkpad X260. Pretty sweet little machine for $65 shipped!
I think I'm going for "Intrepid," as in the (second, TNG/Voyager-era) U.S.S. Intrepid.
toomanysecrets, Spanish #FreeBSD 14.1-RELEASE is out!!

pete_wright, Congrats to the #FreeBSD team for getting 13.3 and 14.1 out the door! 🎉

Happy updating everyone!
pete_wright, greets from #freebsd 14.1
penryu, @pete_wright Someone should extend neofetch on FreeBSD to include zfs ashift values!

thomholwerda, Can any of you nerds help me get a ThinOS Activation License? ThinOS is Dell's weird version of #FreeBSD.
stefano, One of the most fundamental yet little-known features of FreeBSD is its ability to be used in read-only mode very easily. By installing the system on a UFS file system, you just need to modify the fstab file, change "rw" to "ro," and reboot. On the next boot, the system will automatically create mount points in RAM for the main directories (/tmp, log, etc.), and it will run perfectly.
This was the main reason why, many years ago, I chose FreeBSD for almost all my embedded systems. Even today, on my Raspberry Pies, I keep the SD cards in read-only mode and use external storage in read-write mode. This ensures that, in case of an unexpected poweroff, the system will come back up, and there will be no wear on the memory card.

stefano, I've been meaning to do this for a while, and tonight I finally supported @mwl for his new book: Run Your Own Mail Server: A Book for Independence & Privacy
Every book I've read by mwl has gifted me with smiles, laughter, knowledge, awareness, and a desire to experiment.
Can't wait to dive into this new work!#FreeBSD #NewBook #Excited #Reading #inspiration #EmailHosting #SelfHosting

How many Italians use #BSD ?
grumpybozo, I will refrain from looking up who decided that #FreeBSD needed to lose a magic comment line from every init script and config file but didn’t need etcupdate (or whatever we're calling mergemaster now) to understand that change as a no-op, because if I were to identify that person I would feel compelled to find them and extract my wasted time from the front end of their remaining lifespan.
feld, @grumpybozo mergemaster did understand that change as a no-op if you give the right flags to mergemaster. it's all in the man page.

Older systems can be used in many ways - esp. as servers 😉
I still need to play with bhyve
shupfel, German This costed me hours. If you ever have this problem with #FreeBSD pkg:
pkg: No SRV record found for the repo 'FreeBSD'
pkg: packagesite URL error for pkg+http://pkg.FreeBSD.org/FreeBSD:13:amd64/quarterly/data.pkg -- pkg+:// implies SRV mirror typeIn other words, your computers fail to resolve "SRV" DNS records ... AND you are using #dnsmasq or #openwrt, then:
Check whether you have the option "filterwin2k" on. Switch it off. In the #openwrt router it is disguised as "Filter useless".
antranigv, I love it when computers Just Work™
antranigv, @feld this is a good point, I have to check what we use. I think we still use mount.devfs, which always had issues.
feld, @antranigv Note: the reason you can't use mount.fstab is because this parses the file line by line makes regular mount commands out of it instead of just using mount -F to the file! And there's not even a way to make mount ignore already-mounted errors unless you use -F
Maybe it would be easiest to umount the stopped jail as you will know for sure it was torn down correctly if you can successfully do that
steven, [Michał Sapka's website] Why I run a BSD on a PC
https://michal.sapka.me/bsd/why-bsd/
penryu, @steven The general sentiment is fine, and I mostly agree, but I have some... notes... about the details.
For one:
> Since OpenBSD and FreeBSD
> grew out of Unix, they are binary
> compatible,but their kernels
> differ significantly.
_bapt_, if someone is interested in contributing to #FreeBSD but do not have ideas, here is one: "fix API compatibility between our libusb and linux's one without breaking ABI", don't hesitate to ask me for more detail

feld, (edited ) @stefano oh great, did they get slashdotted^Wmastodonned and the backend crashed? getting 504s
stefano, As planned last week, in tomorrow's weekly #BSDPub meetup, we'll delve into backup strategies and showcase some behind-the-scenes of the BSD Cafe setup and its backups. More details on the event's website: https://bsdpub.bsd.cafe
mms, #Userfriendly guest star - #freebsd
https://michal.sapka.me/userfriendly/19990320/
(it's an arc, not one pic.)
louis, @mms That's super funny 😃 I'd love to go full in BSD, however many of the libs/langs I use are either not available or in a very specific version and I don't want to compile them all by myself.
BSD clearly has some momentum in the end-user area and that's great.
jutty, Alas, I have to consider some other hardware that is more BSD friendly than what I currently have for my main laptop. Wifi worked great on NetBSD, whereas it was flaky on FreeBSD, but the audio input was the flaky one.
A ThinkPad, maybe? I'll gladly accept hardware recommendations for BSD-friendly models from at least a decade ago (read: cheap).
Current status: Deciding between Void and Alpine for the next episode of The Main Machine Trials®
netbsd, @greggyb @jutty Sadly most from Lenovo have BIOS whitelists by default, forbidding you from changing the card, though there's the option of getting an X230 with Coreboot pre-installed from various vendors.
I've been using an X260 for the past years, though I use an USB WiFi device (urtwn) or ethernet for reliability.
greggyb, @netbsd @jutty Yeah, that is a pretty lame part about Lenovo machines. I loved my x260 and its dual batteries, but I've recently moved to a #FrameworkLaptop and I couldn't be happier.
patrizia, Do you live in Guernsey?
Do you use FreeBSD?
Do you want to financially support its continued development? If you answered 'yes' to all of these questions, then I have good news for you - the FreeBSD Foundation's payment provider have made some fixes so you can now donate from Guernsey!
You should also get in touch with me so that we can start a user group :-)
