I posted a few weeks ago about how people were leaving empty nitrous cylinders lying around and wondering if they could be reused for something.

Someone left two of them in the gutter of my house last night, so I grabbed them to get a better look at them.

They are heavy steel. The end caps look like they're 1/4" thick. The label on the tanks say they are rated 120 bar working pressure (1740 psi). That's a lot of pressure!

We need a singer. Or maybe even more than one? Could it be you or someone you know?

We meet in Oakland, some of us live on this side, some in San Francisco.

manufacturing is still pretty fun. i like the aspect where there's a hundred different things in flight, and whilst it feels trivial to note down any single thing, trying to hold the whole thing in your head at once is just too much

zackstern,

@jacqueline are you storing and building in the space you live? I’m curious in general and also as someone who repairs music gear in the space I live. Sometimes it’s a bit too much (clutter, chaos) for me.

To give you an idea of the Asian American anger at David Chang for being an asshole who wanted to enforce trademarks on ‘chilli crunch’, I was at my friend’s home in LA looking at his Asian cookbooks when he said, ‘you wanna see some garbage?’ Then he pulled out the Momofuku cookbook and we both laughed and laughed

zackstern,
@zackstern@hachyderm.io avatar

@skinnylatte do you have any cookbook recommendations of any Asian styles? Sorry to say I have Momofuku hah/boohoo from when I used to like him.

I’m into books and cooking with detailed—even long—processes for complete results. I’m interested in the Rintaro book but also want more by actual Asian cooks.

@skinnylatte thanks, I like Kenji and I have a round wok. I’ll check them all out.

@skinnylatte the romantic part of me that got into cooking stuff for days sous vide or constantly stocking my freezer with bones (and then stocks) says, “Building a wood grill hmmm.”

Heh, thanks. I have seen a little of Just One Cookbook, I’ll revisit.

@ivory huh, maybe a bug you haven’t seen: I’ve noticed some posts with multiple pictures haven’t shown alt text on the first image.

I just saw it on my own post and realized it’s probably a bug. Alt text shows on Mastodon webpage for all images. This is iOS, current available version.

I went to a Turkish restaurant and I told the auntie ‘no rice please’ and she didn’t really speak English but she said ‘no no rice’ so now I have rice but hey it’s actually amazing rice (and genuinely one of the best Turkish restaurants I’ve been to, as good as in Turkey omg)

She also reminds me of all the Turkish aunties I know

(It’s called Muma Kitchen, west side LA)

zackstern,

@skinnylatte were you saying recently how much you like rice?

Was this just your temporary choice? I’m glad it was great!

I was at the grocery store last night and every checkout line was very backed up. A pair of women with an extremely full shopping cart got into the 15-items-or-less line and caused further delays by asking questions about the prices of many items, and having the wrong items for coupons they had (necessitating them going back to the aisles to get the right items).

The customer in front of me, who was buying a gallon of milk and a box of cereal got increasingly disgruntled over how long it was taking and started talking shit to the cashier for letting the women bring their giant order through the express line.

The cashier didn't really know what to say, so he was deflecting, and I felt bad for him. When he left to go get a bottle of alcohol from the locked liquor cases, the disgruntled customer turned to me and apologized for making a scene.

I told him it was fine, but he shouldn't be getting mad at the cashier because retail employees aren't really allowed to say anything to bad customers.

When the cashier came back, the disgruntled customer apologized to him several times, and said he knows he's just trying to do his job.

And then he started talking shit to the two women instead.

I don’t understand people who are like ‘what’s the point of decaf / nonalcoholic beer’

I feel like the point of those is, people who really like those food groups (coffee! Beer!) but can’t have the other thing (caffeine! Alcohol!) for health reasons, who will choose to consume like black coffee and hazy IPA ‘without the point’, solely for the taste, is the point :)

It me

zackstern,
@zackstern@hachyderm.io avatar

@skinnylatte @APBBlue are any of these or others without caffeine? I thought decaf reduced it but often still has a lot?

zackstern,
@zackstern@hachyderm.io avatar

@skinnylatte @APBBlue thanks, I’ll check out the tea maybe. Somehow I thought it still had way more than that.

When you're reading The Great Gatsby and drinking a malt liquor in the park and the cops cruise by, rolling and suddenly halting their black and white SUV in a game of let's-see-who-does-what-when-they-think-we're-leaving, the vital thing to do is to act cool and keep leafing through those pages

The Turkish Delight from Simurgh Bakery in Emeryville, surfaced by @skinnylatte is worth seeking out.

I’ve only tried a bad version of this in a candy-making class, which was basically gummy candy with the idea of rose. This great version is overloaded with rose pedals and pistachios; it’s completely different. (The place I took the class went out of business. Coincidence?)

https://www.simurghbakery.com/

zackstern,
@zackstern@hachyderm.io avatar

@skinnylatte I did! It’s the second time I’ve been there I think. Great bread, yes. Before, I think I tried a lot more stuff I hadn’t encountered. I got pitas this time and they were worth going alone.

I thought it was weird to open a bakery next to Arizmendi but they’re pretty different.

Saw a resturant that tags every dish either “healthy” or “happy,” saying that it’s okay to pick fried pickles and a hamburger if it makes you happy.

Marking each one seemed to contradict their attempt to empower people to eat what they like.

I did not eat there and am still thinking about it. I am not their target customer.

It has come to light that someone in my office has been relying on the campus custodian to wash the dirty dishes they've been leaving in the office sink.

That custodian has been transferred elsewhere on campus now, and the new custodian refuses to wash people's dishes for them (rightly so).

So, now, there have been dirty dishes sitting in the office sink for two weeks because someone is dirtying them and leaving them for someone else to clean up.

I'm embarrassed by my coworkers right now.

zackstern,
