Hey, I'm Tom. I love technology and all things open source.

I have a bunch of :raspberrypi:'s running my home lab, keeping my personal life off the internet. Still a way to go before I'm completely offline, a major issue being Google Home.

I run :debian: with :xfce: and my gaming computer does too! I also have a Fairphone4 which runs :lineageos2: with MindTheGapps.

How do you buy (paper) books ethically?
I was looking at abebooks, but they're owned by #LexCorp now 🤦‍♂️

Iv never made anything like this before so feedback would be welcome. https://www.michaelrbparker.com/

@michaelparker I'd maybe call the 'portfolio' something else, like 'personal projects'. The green theme is nice and stands out, but it's very hard to read the bright green on black text. Also, the font chosen is a little difficult to skim read, fine for the titles but the main text is hard, especially the larger paragraphs.

If you're showing this to employers, I might give the video section a bit more information, it could be mistaken that you just recorded the video.

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@michaelparker I like to add a little overscroll to my sites as it makes the user feel a less restricted, just add padding-bottom to the html.

Why do you have a contact form and an email listed? The form is usually used to hide your email address from scrapers. Your email link's href is name@email.com which is obviously wrong ;)

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@michaelparker Overall I really like it. I'd remove youtube from your title, as it's in your footer anyway. You could completely remove the navigation from the top, as there's not really much need for it. (youtube link in heading using an incorrect tag herf should be href)

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@michaelparker In your DOM remove , initial-scale=1.0 from <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">. Give the html element a min-width, something that feels comfortable. This will automatically zoom the site for mobile. Currently, it just squishes to nothing. Be sure all content fits inside your min-width otherwise things will expand outside your border.

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@michaelparker Hope this all helps, overall it's pretty great!

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@michaelparker Oh, in terms of a11y, all links should be underlined if not obviously buttons. No idea how you'd fix this for your current header.

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@michaelparker iframes are an old, insecure method of attaching video to sites. Seems YouTube still recommends it, which is weird. If it's your own video, you can use html5's new <video> tag. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/video.

This would also help remove an outside call from your site, as your calls are currently quite busy for a small site.

Our holiday home wifi is so bad thats it’s better to use mobile data!

Why provide internet if it doesn’t work?

Is this what snail internet is like for those not on virgin media or the properly fast OpenReach connections???

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@hobbitswife It becomes more painful the further from an exchange you are. Our speeds used to be in the KB's when our whole village's internet cable used to wrap around an airport. But then my mobile data, even now we have FTTC is faster. I think the countries mobile data has improved much faster than cable. Too bad latency is a nightmare.

@revk My fridge does this, just stopped putting unbalanced liquids on the outer part of the shelf. But then my shelf isn't as useless as yours looks if you take into account the issue.

Something I miss from : Being able to command-click on a Finder window's titlebar, and seeing a pop-up menu of the entire file path.

I can't find any convenient way of doing this in , other than making the window huge so it can show the entire path, which doesn't work with my workflow most of the time.

Just for the curious, the directory I'm working on now is 127 characters long (full path) and 8 directories deep from /

Edit: Found a solution, thanks to @Tionisla

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane I could never leave the simplicity of XFCE, everything just does what you want it to. Thunar has a HUGE space for file path.

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane And you can expand it just like you would in firefox.

    For those who like to do 'stuff' (perform tasks) via scripts, here is a ditty I just published on a Forum LiliDog (Debian based).

    This script is designed to clean & update my Debian Sid base.

    It may be helpful or simply prove how little I actually know. 😜
