Hey, I'm Tom. I love technology and all things open source.

I have a bunch of :raspberrypi:'s running my home lab, keeping my personal life off the internet. Still a way to go before I'm completely offline, a major issue being Google Home.

I run :debian: with :xfce: and my gaming computer does too! I also have a Fairphone4 which runs :lineageos2: with MindTheGapps.

@cheeaun This is the second time I've seen this. Seems opening a profile in a new tab for ActivityPub users opens to JSON. Also, profiles are empty. Guessing this might be a federation issue. But shouldn't there be a fallback action for this while federation is borked? The username is @awakari@activitypub.awakari.com for investigation. Or is this just spam? On fosstodon the same action opens the profile on fosstodon.

A screen recording showing that opening a profile in a new tab takes you to a json file while using phanpy.

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@cheeaun I'm pretty sure it is a bot looking into it.

Open in new tab has always been a little confusing for me on Phanpy, any other site would keep links internal, unless explicit. I find it odd that clicking a link and control clicking a link take you to two different places. In some specific parts of the UI.

You already have 'open externally' in the three dot menu.

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@cheeaun OK looking into it, it looks like you hijack control clicking, instead of opening in new tab it opens a slide in from the bottom. I expected this to open a new tab, the same as right-clicking then new tab.

I don't think modifying browser binds is a good idea either.

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@akurilov Why am I getting followed by bots?

@akurilov I don't want notifications of bots following me, this is the second.

Question for #Debian users:

I'm running testing on my laptop, as I have been for a couple decades. I've been waiting for the t64 transition to settle out before resuming updating packages.

I think the transition is now (mostly?) done, but aptitude is still flummoxed when trying to resolve 1300+ package updates.

I've tried to find small groups of packages that I can manually select and upgrade, but with few exceptions pulling on one of these threads quickly leads to a tangled mess of broken packages.

Any advice for how to tackle this would be most appreciated!

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@plantarum You may have waited too long, best to update regularly. Knowing how to use apt-mark is a must. (apt pin is the new way to do it, but I like apt-mark's simplicity) Might need to back up your home folder and reinstall.

Else, try using apt or work manually using sudo apt-mark hold *package name* for each package that's blocking the update. You'll then need to un hold those packages at various points.

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@HankB @plantarum That's when you use apt-mark. Gnome/KDE are incredibly dependency heavy desktops and will have breakages now and again. You should still update the rest of the system and unhold the gnome/kde packages once dependencies have been updated.

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@plantarum @HankB Using this as a learning opportunity and attempting to update could be good, if you're interested. If you're going to wipe anyway, there's no loss.

Why are all TV's and projectors in X-Files black and white yet the shows in colour? Is it supposed to be "in the past"?

Love that this was filmed pre mobile phones, they have an excuse for each character not to know what's going on. Nowadays, TV shows and films feel a little silly when someone can't reach someone else.

Also, their "Hacking" and computer software is a little more believable. Except in S1 E16 typing on the computer to draw a face. Also, no mice!! Pre GUI.

@cymplecy Some new thing comes out every week that makes me distrust Microsoft more and more. It was the inbuilt Ads, lies about Windows 10 being the last OS and Windows 11 being dumbed down on release that made me switch. Also, valves work on proton.

@cymplecy Valve the company that makes steam, half life, Team Fortress 2. They have contributed substantially to the open source project wine under the fork proton. For their Steam Deck device.

I put Deluxe Paint II on my FreeDOS retro EeePC. Did some pixelart next to the fireplace.
It shows what we got in the garden.

Nice article => https://www.datagubbe.se/dpaint/

BTW: this setup uses so little computing power (relative to the EeePC power) that it still works hours on battery!

When #Mozilla created their new logo with :// in it, the team behind reached out to me and asked if I had any objections since #curl already was using :// in our logo.

I did not object - I approved of it. I think it validated our logo choice and I am jealous they have a name that can hold :// integrated the way they do.

User: Make simple python application using pygame. Let it opens in the center of the screen, be 512x512 in size and have a hearth icon/shape inside that changes size in hearthbeat fashion.

It works! Looks like Sci-Fi when it does each step just as any other junior programmer. Runs code, checks errors, adds graphics (almost hearth) and in the end even creates venv for this project.

I'm using OpenAI API for this.

@w84death I have found OpenAI's GPT-3.5 the best for code related questions, which is odd as codium is supposed to specialise in it, but it tends to either make stuff up or make the answer un-needingly complex. Interested in getting my hands on Devon.
