Today’s observation:

People react with more empathy & cooperation when I ask them to wear a mask (for ex., during appointments) if I tell them I am trying to protect someone at home who is immunocompromised (trying to avoid getting sick so I don’t get them sick), compared to when I ask them to wear a mask just for me (crazy old me, trying not to catch a brain eating virus). I don’t know what to make of this. Anyone else have this experience?

Henry does this thing where he goes into a room (like pantry, bathroom, etc.) and stands up on the back of the door, closing it and trapping him. He’ll cry until I rescue him, and then I usually give him a treat to help him “feel better” (because I’m a sucker). Today he went into the pantry, partially closed it, then stood there looking at me until I “rescued” him (and then waited expectantly for his treat). I’ve created a monster 😂

Please help, Mastodon gardeners and plant experts! I was away for about a month, and came back to find this monster of a plant in my yard. It’s in a location that shouldn’t be growing anything (full sun, gets very hot, all other plants there died years ago, etc.). Occasionally small, familiar weeds pop up but nothing like this. Anytime know what it is? A new weed? Uninvited but friendly bush? Man-eating alien in disguise? Help!

I’m so proud of my flowers and shrubs this year! I don’t have a green thumb and usually psych myself out from even attempting to grow anything, but I’m really trying this year. These pics are of established plants that came with the house, so I just need to let them do their thing and focus on not accidentally killing them. This year, for the 1st time, I actually tried pruning them. Seems to have helped! The rose bush is the fullest it’s ever been. 🌹❤️

I don’t know what kind of bush this is. It is a flowering bush with light yellow-green leaves and soft pink flowers.
Another very similar mystery bush. It is a flowering bush with dark green leaves and soft purple flowers. It has recently rained, and there are water droplets on the leaves and petals.

Day 13 of my “do a brief workout every day for 14 days” challenge:

Bed exercises again tonight (no cats this time, they’re too busy sleeping on the heating vents). I did 6 leg/ab exercises (5 sets of 10), and also tried out two “chair” exercises (2 sets of 10) that were recommended by my instructor.

It took about 15 minutes, during which I watched another YouTube disaster video (a guilty pleasure). Feeling surprisingly good. Almost to my goal!

Chronicling my journey toward creating my first #flower garden (aka. “Big Dreams, Maybe 1 or 2 Weak Skills”)

Days 3 and 4 and IDK I lost count

And it’s done! I think. Earlier this week I bought the soil, compost, and seeds. I also bought a big beefy metal rake to try to break up the underlying hard packed soil. I was able to break up maybe the top 2-3 inches…not sure if that was enough but I did enjoy raking the dirt in my impromptu zen garden.

#Garden / #gardening experts, I need help. Or maybe just reassurance. I am a novice. I have come up with a plan to turn an empty rock bed on the side of my house into a garden bed for native wildflowers. I have gathered materials and instructions for doing it. My plan is to clear the rocks, cut away the underlying landscaping fabric, install rubber edging to separate the garden from the rocks, fill with soil, add seeds, cover with mulch, and let it do its thing over winter…

Day 2:

Much better start today. No unwelcome wasps or monster bugs today, and the weather was cool-warm with a lovely light breeze. The plan today was to install the garden edging, and fill in with soil. Unfortunately I found out that the garden center where I want to buy the soil is closed on Sundays so that will need to wait until next weekend.

The landscaping fabric has been cut back, with a small amount tucked under the garden edging.
The edging is complete! It has been staked into place and is now ready for soil to be added. The bed is decidedly less kidney-bean-shaped and looks a bit more like a piece of candy corn.

Merry Christmas Eve!

(Update: so far, the cat tunnel under the tree has worked! After a few initial attempts to reach over/stand on it and paw at ornaments (which resulted in dissatisfied harrumphing and pathetic baby whines), Henry hasn’t tried again since. He has managed to somehow climb over the tunnel and under the tree skirt to nap beneath the branches (see pic 2). But this is adorable and hasn’t bothered the tree so I’m allowing it.)
