I got an angry email saying they refuse to contribute because of my code of conduct. Seems to work as intended.

I need to resize a GNU/Linux desktop for a broken display where the bottom 60 pixel rows no longer work. I know about xrandr and I already know how to use that to solve similar problems, but does anyone know if a GUI tool exists to set custom screen sizes that are not offered by default for those that are less familiar with the CLI?

@chad wow. I cannot guess how you made that work in 2014! "Conducting" with whole new layers! Bravo. Also: it's even creepier now than when you published it. /cc @timnitGebru @emilymbender Sound on, Captions on ➔ https://mstdn.ca/@chad/111397428163819728

been thinking about this very common git workflow and how git doesn't do much to help you ensure that if you're using this workflow:

a) you never commit to your local main branch directly
b) you regularly pull from origin/main to keep your local main branch up to date

you just need to be careful

branch protection on github/gitlab helps with this, but I don't think there's much in git itself

thomzane,

@b0rk GitHub filled in much of the blanks with the gh command line tool. https://github.com/cli/cli This still leaves all of the other forges to fend for themselves. Pagure has pag. https://pagure.io/pag Gitea has tea. https://gitea.com/gitea/tea

thomzane,

@b0rk git fetch, git pull, and git push are still needed outside of gh. gh handles nearly all of the things that git cannot handle and wraps some of thing things that it can when it has additional settings it can add to the process. An example of something gh cannot do is deal with individual comments on an issue or add emoji reactions to a comment. https://github.com/cli/cli/issues/6161 There is a plugin that might work for this, but I have not tried it. https://github.com/LangLangBart/gh-look

thomzane,

@blueghost You can read more about Fingerprint Detector (fpd) on the JShelter webpage. https://jshelter.org/fpd/

thomzane,

@jfmblinux @blueghost @fsf CanvasBlocker has some overlap in functionality, but this Fingerprint Detector (fpd) feature in this thread is unique to JShelter. CanvasBlocker is not necessary if you use JShelter.

thomzane,

@jfmblinux @blueghost @fsf We very recently added translation support. A French translation has not been submitted. If you have the ability to translate to French or any other missing languages, documentation can be found at https://jshelter.org/i18n/

JShelter 0.16 is out now! This release majorly improves upon Fingerprint Detector and removes WebWorker settings from recommended temporarily. When you are browsing you need extra protection. The #JShelter extension should be part of that protection. https://jshelter.org/versions/#016

JShelter0.15.2 is out now! This fixes an issue with reCaptcha and improves CSS on larger screens. When you are browsing you need extra protection. The #JShelter extension should be part of that protection. https://jshelter.org/versions/#0.15.2

Tell us: What do you plan to do to celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day today? (Poll ends in 24 hours.)

P.S. Search for other cool DRM-free stuff on https://www.defectivebydesign.org/guide

thomzane,

@endDRM I sailed the 6 sideways seas (www) to plunder a new land boat. YARR!!!

thomzane,

@Privatepower42 @endDRM There are stores that sell DRM-free audio that include new music listed in the guide: https://www.defectivebydesign.org/guide/audio

You can use the VLC app on an iPhone to play DRM-free media on the device, but I would recommend migrating away from Apple products as Apple has historically been adversarial to software freedom.

I bought a new HP+ LaserJet MFP M234dwe printer and it has my blood boiling. You set it up with an app (red flag). It uses an anti-pattern to try to get you to agree to send all of your data to them and friends (red flag). It forces a connection to the Internet (red flag).

thomzane,

@vitali64sur I expected it to just work like old HP printers did. Now it just works the way they want it to. I put that project aside, but I think the next step is to give this away and buy an old HP printer that only connects to a computer with USB.

thomzane,

@vitali64sur Is there similar support for a cups server with Brother printers like HP has with the hplip package?

thomzane,

@Suiseiseki @vitali64sur Do you have anything to backup your statement calling hplip proprietary? It seems to be GPL-2.0-or-later at a glance.

thomzane,

@Suiseiseki That is a problem. Looks like Debian and many other distributions strip that problematic blob out so it doesn't affect me. https://packages.debian.org/bookworm/hplip

thomzane,

@Suiseiseki I generally trust Debian maintainers to diligently follow the Debian Free Software Guidelines and patch out any questionable material. Their track record has historically been very good.

thomzane,

@Suiseiseki Group decisions with the installer and package maintainers are vastly different scopes.

After you navigated the maze to find the correct ISO, you were hit with a big red message that you wouldn't be able to use your hardware with this distribution often times referring to WiFi devices. The solution is to purchase new hardware, start over with a different ISO, or use a different distro. In practice, many people were moving away from Debian because of the installer UX and confusion.

GitHub is getting worse. I was initially excited to see the new technology showcased in DragGAN, but the source was not included in the initial release. The code is now available under a non-free license that includes a non-commercial clause. I would point this out, but only contributors are allowed to post issues and comment on issues in this repository. https://github.com/XingangPan/DragGAN You also cannot view individual files on the site without enabling JavaScript which is a new change.

thomzane,

@vitali64sur Thank you! This is a pro tip!
