There’s certain technology that I earnestly wonder why we abandoned it. For example, digital audio players (DAPs).

These devices provided something smartphones don’t: a distraction-free way of playing music.

And they were way more personal because everything on your DAP was put there by you! They were a collection of your genuine taste!

Maybe what I do isn't useless:

"I believe that this class has been a great privilege of mine, and I am so grateful for the knowledge that I have earned throughout this course. I would also like to thank you, Dr. Wood, for having high standards for our work and carrying out the genuineness of our learning. I found out yesterday that I was accepted into a teaching position, and I hope to carry examples such as these into my own classrooms."

@StillIRise1963 so many university admins are so very welcoming of fascist power structures. And, for the most part, faculty are either too fearful and too focused on their subjects and research to effectively challenge their administrators.

I wish there were cooperative colleges.

Reducing harm between something bad and something worse is still a valuable thing to do.

No matter your beliefs or ideology.

It doesn’t mean you stop fighting for what you believe as good. It means that you simply care enough to make things less bad for some people in the world.

Man, why does everything happen at the worst possible time, all together? I'm facing my biggest financial crisis in a decade, might have to sell the house we JUST moved to and move back across the country less than 6 months later for different, non financial reasons, can't find a job AND now my computer is dying...

It's been a rough few months. Not sure when, or if, it's getting better.

    I really do have a soft spot for 80s heavy metal like Iron Maiden and Dio. I don’t listen to it very often, but occasionally the mood strikes.

    There is something about it that feels grandiose, almost naive, and a bit playful compared to the dark assault that much of the genre seems to be these days (though tbh I don’t really have a wide knowledge of contemporary metal).

    It’s also partly nostalgia and a connection to my teen years.

    Over the past couple of years my interest in new computer tech has waned considerably and I increasingly find people who champion the new this and the new that as anything but ways to make a handful of people rich as they deplete our planets resources to be speaking an alien language. Yes, I use a computer to make music and I appreciate some of the tools they provide, but overall I just can’t get excited about it when the planet is burning and fascists want to kill me.

    #GreatAlbums1980s - #EchoAndTheBunnymen – Crocodiles (1980). Like Joy Division, the Bunnymen boiled punk fury and affinities with pop's madder prophets (Bowie, Iggy, Jim Morrison) into music that bristled against conformity. "Do it Clean" suggests anything but, while "Stars are Stars" showcases Ian McCulloch's theatrical yowl and "Rescue" forges a new blues for Thatcher's England. Rumours that "Echo" was a drum machine are irrelevant against this organic, very human music.
