How to guarantee that I will not review manuscripts for you:

• Send me an invitation to review at midnight on 26th Dec.

• Send me a reminder that I have not responded to the invitation at midnight on 29th Dec, despite my OoO stating I am on leave until Jan 2nd^.

• Send me yet another email at 6am on Sunday 31st Dec, informing me the invitation is withdrawn because I haven’t responded.

^ Yes the systems are automated but, implementing a conditional action if an OoO response is received, should not be a difficult problem to solve.

steveroyle,
@steveroyle@biologists.social avatar

@danielcolquitt totally agree with you. This year I had a reminder on Christmas Day at 9am to do a probation meeting with someone I line manage. It wouldn't take much to ensure these reminders were sent on working days.

Dear @zotero , just to say, I am really looking forward to the day when you’ll have an #Android app :)

This season of family gatherings is a great moment to persuade your relatives to install the Signal App @signalapp in their phones as a way to get your photos of the events. Then setup a family group chat with them all so that there's a reason to start and then continue using it.

That's one path to wean them off whatsapp and even worse messenger apps. At the very least your own communications within the family will happen outside those privacy nightmarish ever-hungry gargantuan for-profit corporations.

steveroyle,
@steveroyle@biologists.social avatar

@albertcardona @signalapp I’ve given up on that battle!

More adventures in machine learning.

I took advantage of the holiday period and set up another training session on one of the GPU workstations in our building (thanks to Laura in CAMDU for help). Considerably faster on this machine but still by my calculation it should only finish by Christmas Day afternoon.

steveroyle,
@steveroyle@biologists.social avatar

An update: the training finished ahead of schedule on Christmas morning.
Inference on a small dataset worked OK 🎉
Then, segmenting two much larger datasets knocked the workstation offline (twice) 😕
Now, using substacks of those two datasets, it seems to be working 🤞🏻

My annual call!

Please suggest a cool paper/preprint in your field in the last year or so!

For a course I teach, I am collecting papers on: cell/dev bio, microbio, neuro, maths/stats/CS/chem/phys applied to biology.

Students use one paper as the basis for a "research grant application" that they will write. So papers that are cool but also open doors to future study are ideal! Do you know one? It can be your own, I don't mind!

Free journal T-shirt and jeans is the appropriate academic dress at my university.

This morning’s 🌧️ run commute put me over 2500 km for the year. Ahead of my target of 3 Mm for 2023.
An easy running week for me following a new parkrun PB of 19:27 last Saturday.

Note, occasional running achievement posts are intended to inspire other runners (rather than bragging, honest!).

Not sure what those who advocate for the use of ChatGPT in scientific writing have in mind. It is the very act of writing that helps us think about the connections and implications of our results, identify gaps, and devise further experiments and controls.

Any science project that can be written up by a bot from tables of results and associated literature isn’t the kind of science that I’d want to do to begin with.

Can’t imagine completing a manuscript not knowing what comes next, because the writing was done automatically instead of me putting extensive thought into it.

And why would anyone bother to read it if the authors couldn’t be bothered to write it. Might as well put up the tables and figures into an archive online, stamp a DOI on it, and move on.

steveroyle,

@albertcardona I feel the same. I saw someone I respect advocating use of LLMs for paper writing, saying “it’s only like using a grammar check”. I get that if one is writing in a second language, it could be helpful; but this was kind of shocking to me.

I reached a wall in my quest to delete all my past tweets.
I can’t see any of my tweets before July 2022, so I can’t delete them.
My retweets from around that time don’t have the 🔁 button in green, so I can’t undo them.
They are clearly still there as the account says 16k tweets.

I tried the Redact app and it doesn’t seem to do anything.
I would like to keep my current account so I can keep encouraging people to join Mastodon, but I don’t want my content to be used by MuskTwitter’s “AI” training, so I want to delete ALL my past tweets.

Any suggestions?

@elduvelle well I was going to reply to say I am in a similar position (12.5 k posts written but essentially no content) but I just checked and they have reinstated a whole bunch of old posts! I have read about this happening to other people. Gah, I will try again!
