That was not meant to be a "look at me” post, btw. Just highlighting how bananas the workload of this job can be sometimes. #LifeOfPI

Post by Markus Meister about @eLife ’s publishing model. Positive assessment and a plea to make “live” preprints & abandon typesetting.

What fraction of a journal's papers are preprinted?

tl;dr: in cell/dev biol journals it's about 25-50%

Surely this is a resigning matter? UK's “science minister" libelled two academics (by uncritically repeating a false claim by right wing think tank Policy Exchange) and has to pay damages. It transpires she has done so using the public purse.

This is a cool preprint. Neuroscience aside, for a cell biologist, the idea that sleep-deprivation can alter mitochondria morphology and mitochondria-ER contact sites to replenish lipids, is very exciting.

I have 38 papers in my “papers to read” pile. Seriously tempted to delete the list and start over. I think it’s the only route to zero.

Greetings from the Space Science Journal.

I recently came across your article titled "Measurements of the timescale and conformational space of AMPA receptor desensitization".

I am writing to extend an invitation for you to submit your paper for publication in our journal.

@albertcardona @andrewplested the existence of #AcademicSpam tells us that there are some who fall for it. This piece changed my mindset:

Oh ImageJ, why are you so slow…

If this takes much longer I will post about another exciting paper.

steveroyle,
@steveroyle@biologists.social avatar

@albertcardona No. How do I do that? Upgrade JDK?

steveroyle,
@steveroyle@biologists.social avatar

@albertcardona thank you!

steveroyle,
@steveroyle@biologists.social avatar

@albertcardona thanks for the offer! Pretty sure the slowness is related to the size of the stacks I am analysing. It's not really a scripting issue, it is single calls that are running slow. Yesterday, generating a 3D distance map for each one was slow. Today, 3D object counter is running slow. It's a memory issue, but as these commands are 3D I don't think I can avoid loading the whole thing in.

Seen on the other place.

I have been mystified why K represented Lysine for many years. Undergrad #biochemistry lecturer said “I don't know why, but I assume it is because of the end of the side chain looks like a K”. Well, turns out the answer is more simple.

People who write : do you write about

  1. projects that you’ve already almost completed (hiding the fact that they’re almost completed, so that you can use the funding for completely new projects), or
  2. new projects that you haven’t really started yet (for which you might just have some preliminary data)?

Do you think 1) is unethical? Do you think 1) is necessary? Do you think 1) has the highest chances of funding? Please comment :)

steveroyle,
@steveroyle@biologists.social avatar

@elduvelle IMO 1 is unethical. I've heard it's the norm in other places, but here in the UK it's a no-no.

steveroyle,
@steveroyle@biologists.social avatar

@elduvelle ha. I think he's saying two things: hiding completed work is not allowed and that UKRI is risk averse.

Is it possible to filter out posts from certain accounts in the Home feed while having them in a separate list? Specifically wanting to have posts from journals (e.g. @biorxivpreprint ) in a “Journals” list, but not see their posts in the home feed.

steveroyle,
@steveroyle@biologists.social avatar

@roaldarboel yes. I have exactly this set up. Just follow the bioRxiv bot of your choice. Add it to list and then select “Hide these posts from home". I can do this within Ivory but it works on the web app too.

Here is the full list for anyone interested. It's a selection of twenty or so cool papers in biology from last year. I'll find out this afternoon which one(s) the students have picked for their coursework!
