We’re seeking input from #FOSS maintainers as we design a fellowship program pilot. We want to test a support mechanism that addresses structural issues in the FOSS ecosystem, and support maintainers who work on open digital infrastructure in the public interest.

If you maintain open source projects, we would be very grateful if you could take ten minutes to respond to the survey:
https://survey.sovereigntechfund.de/968766

Please also repost and share with FOSS maintainers you know. Thanks!

Today at STF co-founder @krakenbuerger called for acknowledgement of the diversity of needs and stakeholders within the FOSS ecosystem, and that reconciling all of them into a single strategy isn’t possible. Iterating and testing at STF is helping us identify some needs, and address some of them, but not all. There need to be more actors in the space to address more of what’s needed.

“When we talk about sustainability, we shouldn't just focus on the individual FOSS project…” 1/2

I came to a realisation yesterday.

Noone read the Road and Bridges report in the FOSS advocacy world. They are all focused on end user FOSS applications.

None of them realised 80% of all apps are FOSS code. And noone seems to ask where it comes from.

We are legitimately infrastructure at this point, as noone realise we exist.

And we are crumbling under the maintenance. And we are not organised to change that. I have no solutions to offer.

Get loud i guess.

@Di4na Everyone at STF reads Roads and Bridges when we start. It definitely influences how we approach our work and mission!

On the panel on EU OSS fund, Adriana Groh shares learnings from STF:

On how an EU fund might interact with national actors: “We need more actors in this field, not fewer, especially actors with public money for the public interest. More actors creates desired resilience and redundancy, which is a good thing. With just 1 or 2 actors providing support, it’s dangerous for communities…”

On the panel on security and resilience, STF's @krakenbuerger has four main points:
“The infrastructure that we base all modern society on is neither sustainable nor healthy; it’s a threat for any security concept. It doesn’t work without securing these core technologies”1/4

sovtechfund,
@sovtechfund@mastodon.social avatar

@krakenbuerger "For any kind of regulation that affects open source developers, it can’t be an afterthought in how we support them in complying with these rules. They don’t owe us anything, they’re not our suppliers. We can’t create a hazardous environment for them to develop in." 2/4

sovtechfund,
@sovtechfund@mastodon.social avatar

@krakenbuerger On AI and automation: “AI-powered tools can be very effectively used by developers. We would be well-advised to look into how reliability and security are affected. It’s going to impact how code is written, evaluated, and even how bug reports are submitted.”

“There are not enough people in the space, and this is a hazard and a structural issue. It’s our responsibility to think about how we can grow in a reasonable and sustainable way.” 3/4

sovtechfund,
@sovtechfund@mastodon.social avatar

@krakenbuerger On trustworthiness: “There’s nothing inherently trustworthy or untrustworthy about open source. It’s like asking whether we should trust water. There are ways to make water trustworthy. We can filter it, we can process it, we can put processes in place to make it safe and usable.” 4/4
