@JenMsft I feel so seen! I dream of sheets that have a flap for feet to stick out. That way I can toss and turn and keep the whole blanket on the rest of me.

So the Black man that everyone was laughing at for dialing in to his court case from his car, while his license was suspended, is not so foolish. Racism has people laughing at its victims.

https://www.wxyz.com/news/why-was-the-driver-in-a-viral-videos-license-still-suspended-2-years-after-a-judge-ordered-it-lifted

We'll see how many of the people that were laughing because they thought "Foolish criminal dials in from car, on suspended license case!๐Ÿคฃ" have anything cute to say now. You know that none of them will.

It's just the regular anti-Black cruelty in the US criminal justice system.

sjkilleen,
@sjkilleen@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke thank you. I boosted this because I have to admit, I didn't think about it much at the time and it definitely seemed like "stupid criminal". I guess I felt it was a daily dose of schadenfreude at the time even if I didn't publicly laugh at it. Going to do better to remember this next time. Important to remember the systemic stuff behind this especially when it seems cut and dried. Thanks for the insight.

We love @b0rk's new git zine so I had to make a little promo graphic for the socials, shamelessly riffing on her great style https://wizardzines.com/zines/git/ https://social.jvns.ca/@b0rk/112536801531164103

sjkilleen,

@film_girl @b0rk thanks for reminding me of this great work! I meant to purchase it before because it's clearly a labor of love. I've worked with git for like 10 years and I'm so excited to get to learn more about it this way.

I certainly don't know anyone in Virginia who can protect a woman wishing for an abortion, and I definitely don't want any person in need to ping geepawhill on signal.

@GeePawHill I just realized I've been meaning to share my signal with you! Funny coincidence, I just remembered! No idea what could have brought that on. Btw I'm in VA too!

Someone just reach out to me for a blog post I authored 9 years ago.

If that's not an argument for writing things down and sharing them, I don't know what it is. Something I didn't even remember helped someone across time.

Also, if you want to make an author's day, thank them for a blog post in a comment or e-mail. Tell them how it helped you.

Little victories.

Did you know the Clock app in #windows has a feature called focus sessions, which can help you when you're trying to focus on something?

In Windows 11 it even integrates with do no disturb and will suppress notifications and taskbar app icon flashing

Anyone gotten #jetbrains #rider to build a #dotnet #docker container without fast mode and still be able to access user secrets?

Our container doesn't currently work well with fast mode. I've told VS to build it in regular mode and that works fine. But in Rider, when disabling fast mode, all user secrets are null. I've tried mounting volumes directly etc. to no avail. Hoping someone else has slayed this one already ๐Ÿคž

sjkilleen,
@sjkilleen@mastodon.social avatar

@khalidabuhakmeh you might have some insight into this I'm thinking. I created a YouTrack ticket as well: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/RIDER-110328/Docker-Configuration-Disabling-Fast-Mode-Disables-User-Secrets-Access

Who works at or knows of a #dotnet org that has a great culture and is looking for excellent engineering ICs/leaders? I have two possibly great fits (not a recruiter, just worked with them and know them well).

I'm a little stuck.

The last major thing I need for @xunit v3 is the cross-process protocol for running tests. The VSTest team is taking a stab at one and I'd love to just reuse what they're doing, but I also don't know how long it'll take them, whether it'll be a good fit for what I need, and whether they'll even officially support me being on the "runner" side rather than the "test" side.

Now I'm wondering how long I wait to find out.

sjkilleen,
@sjkilleen@mastodon.social avatar

@bradwilson we've been speaking with MS on the NUnit team (though I overslept and missed the 7am meeting recently ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ). They seem quite motivated.

I accidentally went down a youtube shorts rabbit hole tonight, curious about what it would recommend to me.

@sjkilleen@mastodon.social avatar

@jacob I really liked your article on celebrating paid OSS sustainability. We have an almost identical take. I wanted to add that I think people push back on these things in part because there's a cognitive dissonance around the guilt of that free consumption; if it's the maintainer's fault for seeking money then it can't be their fault for not contributing. I think that drives a lot of OSS entitlement.

@sjkilleen@mastodon.social avatar

A reminder that domestic abuse often increases after big games like the #SuperBowl.

A few years back I joined a tradition of donating to an organization dedicated to protecting partners from abuse in the losing city.

This year I'm again donating $10 per point of the winning team to an organization in the losing team's city.

I'd love for you to join me with any amount. Who's in?

sjkilleen,
@sjkilleen@mastodon.social avatar

@davidfetter I typically research an organization toward the end of the game. I look for 501(c)3s that appear to have a proven track record. I'm not endorsing particular orgs but I'll post who I donate to and encourage anyone to research their orgs too! Thanks for asking; it's a good question.

sjkilleen,
@sjkilleen@mastodon.social avatar

@davidfetter I do my best and look for other references to their programs from local community sites, etc. -- but I also don't let perfect research get in the way of doing something good. It's a balance; I do the best that I can. Happy to hear recommendations from others as well!

sjkilleen,
@sjkilleen@mastodon.social avatar
sjkilleen,
@sjkilleen@mastodon.social avatar

@davidfetter I suggest you not pop into strangers attempts to do good to shit all over things, because it's a pretty miserable way to live your life. One case doesn't make an organization horrible, and no decision is perfect. I was willing to let your attitude slide before, but honestly, your approach just makes me want to say "fuck off".

sjkilleen,
@sjkilleen@mastodon.social avatar

@davidfetter I can't help but notice that in the, like 8 hours my post was up specifically inviting you to also suggest organizations, you managed to make zero constructive comments while also making yourself out to be far superior.

sjkilleen,
@sjkilleen@mastodon.social avatar

@davidfetter in fact, I'll put some skin in the game to give us a chance to reset: I'll donate another $260 to a SF-based organization helping domestic violence victims that you suggest. I'll wait.

sjkilleen,
@sjkilleen@mastodon.social avatar

@davidfetter as I said, I'm happy to donate to a fund that you select. Looking for you to actually make a concrete, actionable suggestion rather than merely criticizing someone else's attempt.

I obviously would already help any DV survivors that I'm aware of in my own life, but it doesn't really fit with the idea of using an event to raise wider awareness and add a multiplier effect to donations.

For someone who "loves the idea", you have an odd way of of showing it.

Just had one of those great experiences where I adapted to a changing requirement by incrementally updating/adding tests, watching them fail as expected, changing the code until they passed, and then refactoring to cleanup while all tests stay green. It's such a great feeling to code with that level of confidence. Never gets old. And my production code got simpler & smaller as a result.
