TIL North Korea :redstar: has its own propaganda channel on YouTube and it’s comedy gold. A window into an alternative time / world. Dystopian, a tad comical and yet quite interesting.

The declamatory tone of the host at start just cracks me up each time 😂 and the scenes with Kim Jong Un speaking in front of a team of Soviet-style soldiers are really out of this world. They have shots with people in the public crying in emotion as they are thanked for their hard work.

But overall I think: fuck why aren’t our armies actually doing something useful with their time like building green houses to build free vegetables 🌱 for the population? Maybe we have something to learn.

Those 10 thousand luxury flats by the river were apparently given to people who “served the country well”. Only a few millions left to house everyone at such standards but still crazy to think a state can actually print money to give people homes (also happens in Brazil for some of the poorest).

Except instead of dancing for guys running after a ball they are there to cheer and motivate people on their way to work. The narrator says their speed increases. Not sure if they are motivated to work earlier or want to just escape the show or cheesy narrator.

Just got my 40$ Sony Vaio PCG-V505ECP 🙌 part of the case is broken but it looks cute with its 4:3 12” screen (1024x768).

Frustrating: no way it will boot over USB and the PXE boot hangs for some reason (using Ventoy which works fine to boot slightly more recent Thinkpad).

So I am stuck with Windows XP until I receive CD-Rs. I haven’t burned an ISO to an actual CD in years. I want one install AntiX / LocOS or some very lightweight Linux.

@davemark I know they’re very old, but if they can still stream to a 20 year old PC at 480P I am sure they could still work like they did a year ago go on these. For all I know they could support streaming on a G4 running OSX Tiger if it wasn’t for stupid DRM (which serves no actual purpose because everything is pirated anyway)

@matt @davemark Yeah I have an iBook G4 here and really the only app that I can use on it is iTerm :-)

I will probably get Morphos on it at some point to make it “useful”, well useable at least 😅

Like on all old machines the issue is what the web has become. Not only TLS (using Linux can solve it) but also webpages getting heavier by the day , mostly without added value (except for complex web apps).

@matt @davemark I mean this thing still runs Photoshop like it did back in the days. It’s so frustrating that what makes it obsolete the most isn’t software (fixable in theory) but that 1.25 GHz isn’t enough to read text on the web comfortably.

@matt @davemark BTW that iMac is gorgeous. I refrained myself from buying one last year in Switzerland as it would be complicated to bring back to Brasil and also I have no more space on my desk. Though I am sure I could make some room removing my actual work Mac.

As vezes as pessoas me pedem dinheiro na rua, normal, raramente eu tenho dinheiro comigo pq eu centralizo tudo no cartão.

Mas ontem uma pessoa me pediu dinheiro na rua pra inteirar a ração do cachorro dela. Olha, se você está na rua pedindo, talvez, só talvez, ração pro seu cachorro não devesse ser uma prioridade.

@Kriptolix As vezes pra nós parece inimaginável essa queda acontecer mas para muitos moradores de rua tiveram uma vida “normal” antes. Uma primeira parte da vida é derrubada, muitas vezes o emprego, segue depois o entorno familial e finalmente a moradia. O cachorro pode ser o único elemento que acompanhou desde o início e segue ao lado da pessoa.

J’ai beau chercher mais les candidats aux élections en Belgique, même les plus à gauche, n’ont aucun profil accessible en ligne sans avoir un compte.

Ils renvoient tous vers Twitter/Instagram/Facebook/Tiktok. Or, la plupart du temps, il est impossible de voir les profils sans avoir soi-même un compte (la plupart du temps parce que, parfois, ça fonctionne sans que ce soit explicable).

« tout le monde à un compte » -> tout le monde que tu vois parce que, forcément, tu as coupé les autres !

@ploum En 2010 lors de ma première visite au Brésil, à Maceió, il y avait une camionnette qui faisait l’aller-retour sur la rue de plage avec un haut parleur qui répétait juste « votez 14 » (le numéro du candidat sur la machine).

After two decades of Apple Laptops I am still in awe at the fact that I could easily buy a replacement battery for this T61 Thinkpad that is contemporary with my first G4 iBook (around 2006).

Proudly running nightly for a few days and from today on actually mobile (previous battery couldn’t hold one minute).

So after upgrading to Mac OS 14.5 (via OpenCore Legacy Patcher) that’s how the Trashcan Mac Pro is doing: three Apple processes maxing out each one core. Good thing it has six cores and a lot of RAM. Hopefully tomorrow it will be done 🙄

I wish Apple supported Sonoma officially on this Mac and others and just disabled PhotoAnalysis, Siri Suggestion and all the things that are slow without a Neural Engine.

So the annoying thing about the T61 is that it likes to ventilate continuously and noisily. It’s always kinda hot compared to modern devices. Cats like it.

At first I thought the HD was grinding on something before I remembered it’s a SSD and the noise comes from the fan. Same on and .

  • Oh it’s a bit of everything. I code in the blue window, then take notes in the white one, watch the presentation on the small screen, then open the terminal to very serious server admin.

Linux desktop on TV has a c64 integrated in background and runs a basic program, camera moves to side monitor to edit a task summary in Word 4 on Classic Mac OS in Black and White. Zoom back, launches Phenomena Amiga demo on small screen then comes back on TV to launch Cool Retro Term in an amber term then switches to full screen terminal and back. Low volume makes nearby Thinkpad fan and background TV show dominate. The audio. There’s a G4 Cube on the side.

Yes I actually use Word 4.0 on a Mac SE* to note next day main focus points in addition to the actual todo list on more recent Mac.
