TIL North Korea :redstar: has its own propaganda channel on YouTube and it’s comedy gold. A window into an alternative time / world. Dystopian, a tad comical and yet quite interesting.

Apparently when the huge army isn’t training to fight the impending second American invasion it turns into a team of “builder soldiers” then dresses back in uniform for celebrations after building giant hi-tech … greenhouses complex to get fresh 🥗🥕🥦

Maybe the only solution to solve this issue is to write my own Mastodon app with builtin limit systems. Also at least when I’ll be idling in bed doing nothing useful on this network I’ll be able to say “I am testing my app”.

Me: I have too many computers

Also me: Come on a 12” sony vaio from 2004 for the equivalent of 44$ ? This thing could run 32 bit #HaikuOS . 1.5GHz and 1GB RAM should be enough for everybody.

From the title you wouldn’t guess South Korea sends balloons with propaganda pendrives encouraging people to take down their government and this was a trolling reply.

Sure they join TV shows to look cool, food and medicine to imply the other ones are starving which isn’t really the case since the 90s when the Soviet Union fell and left the country totally isolated with the same western embargo as Cuba for decades.

#Propaganda isn’t only from the other side.

So I got my dedicated :haiku: second hand Laptop . The ThinkPad T61 seems to work beautifully. WiFi, Trackpad pretty much everything. For about a hundred dollars it’s a nice little machine.

The keyboard is really pleasant. It loots its little iconic red appendice in the center so I ordered a few. And the battery is dead as promised so I am ordering one.

Never had a ThinkPad before but I appreciate I can get parts even 17-18 years after the machine release.

@santiago@masto.lema.org avatar

A little window into Brazil: #Thinkpad T61 seller (a shop) sent me a short video of it working over WhatsApp just for me (it says my name at start !).

I guess the idea is to prove it all worked when they sent it in case the customer complains. Still for a ~100$ item from 2006 that’s a lot of care. Tests sound, keyboard etc. (Sure 100$ here doesn’t mean the same as in Switzerland)

Man with accent from São Paulo describes laptop and shows it running Windows 7.

Sometimes I wonder if instead of donating to mastodon’s root project monthly I should fund a proper rewrite (like https://github.com/rustodon/rustodon ) or anything that could potentially make it lighter on the long term.

This is a rare case where performance actually matters a lot as corporations always have lots of money but independent instances not.

@santiago@masto.lema.org avatar

So bought a used ThinkPad T61 (core 2 duo 4GB ram) for about 111$ + 30$ for a new battery *

I know I could get a faster CPU for that price but that’s not the point. I am a pervert and want a laptop that is slow (but of quality) to fiddle with lightweight operating systems.

  • yes you can get everything at half that price or in trashcan if you’re not in Brazil, I know.

The problem with is often all the things that DON’T happen because of it.

I guarantee that if American companies were losing billions as a consequence of the current massacre in it would stop overnight.

But it turns out that while “unfortunately the children are on fire” capital keeps expanding. So nothing happens because under capitalism nothing is necessary if it is not expanding capital.

OK the way @phanpy displays boosts is really great. Less tedious than having to enable / disable them. You see there’s a bunch and can scroll laterally.

@santiago@masto.lema.org avatar

One thing @phanpy is missing which I absolutely use in @MonaApp is to hide from the main timeline all the people who are in lists. To me “main” means “all the rest”.

About :

  • it is very close to AntiX (of which it derived) so same tips usually work

  • in the end it’s not different from what you could get of Debian but it’s a good set of presets to start from quickly to get a lightweight XFCE (my choice) or LXDE desktop

  • it is really great to salvage old hardware you feel like trashing on Mac OS as they get slower / unsupported

So I decided to try LocOS -KDE version on the 2014 mac Mini. It was reponsive but just like the heavier KDE neon at some point it ended locking up the GUI while I was doing updates. I could still exit with ALT+F2.

So I guess I need to try the XFCE build.

So as (someone?) recommended, I installed Keka instead of the Unarchiver and it looks nice but I am sure the next time I need to know what’s it called I will have no idea.

Please name your apps like “Keka archiver” or something old people with defective memory chips may find by searching. “Made a zip in keka. Attached it to a mail I wrote in Groumpf to a contact I had stored in Yoplà based on a note from Joplin” (at least one of these is an actual app).

@santiago@masto.lema.org avatar

Is there a non-dev oriented #Linux distribution that is as light weight as AntiX but has strong minimalist opinionated defaults (one app per feature, all consistent) ?

One that would be fine on a 2010 mini and to be used by people averse to tech (read mail, browse web, libre office and that’s it).

santiago, to linux
@santiago@masto.lema.org avatar

So I tried latest KDE Neon on the 2014 Mac mini. Installation was a breeze. It has a bad tendency to lockup the display for some reason.

Overall Neon looks well polished. Had never tried it before. Seems neat, when it doesn’t look up that is.

Oops. Wife clicked yes on Mac OS updates to 14.5. I had disabled auto updates but forgot to disable check (and popups). I had told her in the past “of course you can accept system updates” .

It was a 2014 Mac Mini with OpenCore Legacy Patcher. Hangs on boot now :-/ I know there are ways to get it back but I just started as Target disk to backup and this one will be getting Debian soon.
