Let's make it a game to figure out the insane overreach #Bluesky are attempting.

Hint directly from their Terms of Service (https://staging.bsky.app/support/tos):

a. "...website located at bsky.social (“Site”), [AND!] the Authenticated Transfer [AT] social protocol (“Protocol”)"

b. "...our Site, Protocol, and App... are collectively called the “Services.”"

c. "By making any User Content available through the Services, you hereby grant to Bluesky..."

Any guesses?

🛂 We want to make travelling across EU borders smoother.

That’s why we are launching a public consultation on the digitalisation of travel documents. Your contributions will help establish a common standard in the Schengen area.

Digital travel documents can be easier to issue than physical ones and can facilitate border checks.

This initiative aims to decide on a common format for digital travel documents.

@newsorpigal @EU_Commission You're surveilled anyway when you cross international borders*. Get over it unless you're proposing not doing any checks at your own borders.

Embassy of Russia threatens Ireland after Finbar Cafferkey was killed while defending Ukraine from the Russian invasion.

samueljohnson,

@pogokero The Irish evicted the British Empire from most of Ireland when it was the greatest power on earth. Mere Russians would be easily defeated. Joe Stalin himself was badly beaten up by some Irishmen in London (an Irish nurse solicited their help in a bar). Russians know better than to attack a small neutral country with friends (not forgetting the Skibereen Eagle).

This is a superb article by a disillusioned British unionist whose journey exactly matches that of Scottish friends of mine in Ireland, all of whom voted No to independence in 2014, and every one of whom is now strongly in favour of ending the union. Most, and most of their children, now have Irish citizenship.

The Electoral Reform Society was formed in 1898 to campaign for PR.
It is clear nobody wants it, it has no electoral traction and Labour should concentrate on winning the General Election without distraction.

samueljohnson,
@samueljohnson@mstdn.social avatar

@skibbereeneagle Clear nobody wants it? Most people don't know the first thing about it. Those with experience of it wouldn't part with it.

samueljohnson,
@samueljohnson@mstdn.social avatar

@skibbereeneagle but... as it isn't going to apply next election you're right. It's arguably distraction in advance of it. GTTO is first priority. However, Labour posing as self-interested as Tories will cost them votes.

@jacqui76 I attended a Hogmanay party here a few years ago, after Brexit, w many academics from GB. Without exception the Scots voted no to independence and had changed their minds. Almost all have since become Irish citizens as have their children. The letter of welcome they received (worth looking up) was much appreciated. (says diversity welcome, people not asked to give up their culture, Ireland enriched by their connections etc). TeamOfUs now. 👏

samueljohnson,
@samueljohnson@mstdn.social avatar

@jacqui76 Personally, I can't abide Danny Boy nor any other mawkish sentimentality; never suffered homesickness in my decades away and generally avoided Irish pubs etc. I left disillusioned and returned (somewhat accidentally) to a country transformed for the better in my absence. Change is possible, am sure it's continuing despite desire of some to block it. Encouraged by the emergence of Generation Neither and people like Joel Keys (pity he isn't here instead of the bad place).

GeoffWozniak, to random

I am a space enthusiast, but I also want to see quality and care at work. When I watched the clip of the Starship launch today and heard all the cheering even after it started tumbling out of control simply because it was able to get off the launchpad all I could think of was how fucking reckless, vain, and selfish these people are.

They don't care about preservation, because how wasteful is it to build a giant rocket and then just not care when it blows up, leaving a wake debris while massively disrupting a sensitive wildlife zone? I get that you have to iterate on things to improve them, but that doesn't mean you can't think really carefully about what you are doing.

These people aren't thinking. And I think they are doing it on purpose. They want the attention. He wants the attention. It's not about making something useful, it's about belief.

And it's belief in a profoundly stupid thing: that we have to colonize the Moon and Mars right now. They'll burn through whatever they have to on the way and don't give a shit.

Honestly, fuck them.

@GeoffWozniak This reaction is understandable but one-sided. Here's the other side

https://twitter.com/tomaspueyo/status/1651320394807234560?s=20.

I'm a skeptic and think launches should be more regulated but surely that's more likely to be negotiated with a less one-sided critique?
