This week the House voted to prevent DC from allowing non-citizens to vote. I opposed the bill. It was a pure gotcha vote from the majority, but the issues it raises are so interesting that I thought worth a thread this morning. Read along if you want to nerd out with me!

samir,
@samir@m.fedica.com avatar

@SeanCasten
I am a big proponent of proportional representation,
but speaking as an immigrant myself, I don't think non-citizens should have the right to vote.
I always thought of citizenship as a privilege and was very excited to get it when I was a permanent resident, it's a main driver to become one.
You also don't want temporary residents (e.g. work permits or international students) to make lasting changes when they have very different expectations from local citizens

Today I went to the bank to perform two transactions: move money between accounts, and wire some money to an account at another bank.

I brought all required information, ID, etc.

This took me 58 minutes and 59 seconds from standing in line (I was second in line) to walking out the door.

I wish I bought individual stocks so I could short RBC. I don't know if they're bad a training, or if their bad at building software for employees, I have no idea what the problem is. But they're terrible.

@derickr @preinheimer
Welcome to Canada where banks have a lock-in on your money and won't let you send it out to another bank easily.
You can do it with third party services but not from the bank

Now try to send money to another country, that's even bigger challenge

Every once in awhile, I look up variations on my name to see if I can pickup the domain name. Over the years, I've lucked out and been able to grab many of them.

But...WTH is going on here.

I currently have 13.5K followers on atomicpoet.org, and I’m running this server on 2GB of RAM. Despite, this, everything is clearly operational and running smoothly.

And if you want to know why this is a big deal, the more followers you have on the Fediverse, the more resources your server needs.

When I was running servers that weren’t Akkoma+Mangane, using this little RAM with this many followers was unthinkable. Mind you, this is one day after my migration happened – so there’s lots more to test!

@fediversenews

samir,
@samir@m.fedica.com avatar

@atomicpoet @fediversenews usually the issue is how many people are followed and if you use relays
Followers don't need a lot of resources.

If you follow 13k people there would be a much bigger storage requirement (you would get data from each of them)

"SEC filings indicate Trump Media’s revenue amounted to just $1.1 million during the 3rd quarter with a loss of $26 mil.

And yet Trump Media is being valued north of $6 billion on a fully diluted basis, ..."

“The stock price is clearly a bubble,” Yale law professor Jonathan Macey told CNN. “No rational investor would take the stock at face value, especially if they had to hold it for any length of time.”

So, who is buying DWAC stock?

samir,
@samir@m.fedica.com avatar

@AkaSci
I am not a financial expert, but I can help
DWAC is a SPAC
https://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/spac.asp
meaning, it has no commercial operations (hence no revenue)

The main purpose is for mergers like this, it accelerates companies to be publicly traded, without jumping through regularity hoops and approvals to shorten the timeline for public offering

We were the first platform to support @Mastodon (a year and a half ago) then we launched our full support for Mastodon analytics/discovery in May 2023

Thanks for all the boosts! I think it is a challenge to let everyone know about this, people still think Mastodon (and Bluesky) are not supported, but we are putting a lot of effort to make sure Mastodon get the support it deserves

chris, to random
@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca avatar

@samir @audunmb awesome!! Can you talk about your integration with Hootsuite? I personally know a few institutional users who are fully wed to that platform so adding your app into HS seems an excellent option to get them on the Fediverse.

samir,
@samir@m.fedica.com avatar

@chris @audunmb
Yes! The whole thing works the same way in our Hootsuite app
I believe the only way you can use Mastodon and Bluesky in Hootsuite is through our app

has anyone heard if the major social media management apps are adding or have added Mastodon. I feel this has been a majornreason we haven't seen broader adoption in the corporate or government space.
Reply with software suggestions?

samir,
@samir@m.fedica.com avatar

@audunmb @chris
Thanks for the mention, Audun!
Not sure what's the definition for "major", we have over 2M users :)

And our Mastodon integration goes far beyond publishing, it gets the full analytics and growth capabilities, it's the most supported platform in our service in terms of capabilities (after Twitter)

Am I the only person left who does not put <input> inside <label> elements, but next to it?

samir,

@ctietze yeah I thought it was more explicit that way before I switched, but then it's easier to nest

samir,
@samir@m.fedica.com avatar

@ctietze @amarok
Yes, but also visually, if you click a label it changes the input element, so it's also kind of weird that you click something and a sibling changes

This is probably too hacky but can't help trying it out. Phanpy's shortcuts settings are saved as (private) notes on my own profile, which will allow export/import in the "cloud".

It's possible to use the API to add notes for other profiles, and they're hidden from (self, currently-logged-in) own profile. I'm using it to store data 🤪

NOT available on the dev site yet, still on my local machine.

Demo of the "cloud" import/export feature for Shortcuts Settings on Phanpy.

@thisismissem @cheeaun @eloquence @nikclayton
Hey Emelia,
Yeah I think that's a challenge of federated apps
I like your PR 27478, definitely an improvement! but I think at some point we might have to create a centralized repo (based on open ID Federation?) where devs register their apps, that way you would have much more control
The per IP rate limits are not sufficient (can be spoofed, or proxied)
I realize this goes against decentralization but there are so many risks with the existing design

Oh I know! I have been visiting your API page for a long time hoping for a change :)

Unfortunately the major differences from the Mastodon API make it a no go:

  1. Token lifetime
  2. paging headers

@samir@m.fedica.com avatar

@dansup @pixelfed oh wow, I have read this the wrong way (esp the refresh token part)
I will have a look again. These two issues were holding us up from adding you as a supported platform

Thanks for clarification

Andrew Tate is a stain on mankind but The Guardian suggesting he is just part of a reaction to feminism is correct.

There had to be a massive huge overdue correction.

But to align it to Tate is silly.

It's just what happens when sensible folk get sick of a broken tainted narrative without substance in any situation.

A pushback to femininism and the whole over egging of diversity crap was always going to happen.

Everyone should be heard.

We don't have to like what people say

Life happens

samir,
@samir@m.fedica.com avatar

@cloudguy
There are many examples in history whenever the underprivileged demands equal rights there is a reaction, abolition of slavery => civil war, reconstruction => KKK

You are right, Tate and his likes are a stain, and they will have their fans now, but history will brand them as monsters, same as all other monsters in history who also had their fans

samir,
@samir@m.fedica.com avatar

@cloudguy
I also say that push backs are natural, but as a society we are making progress, it is our choice to progress with society or stay where we are
200 years ago it was normal to own slaves
100 years ago it was normal to use racist slurs
50 years ago it was normal to use homophobic slurs

Many people balked at the progress then, the same way many are finding it hard to accept the progress we make today

People of colour, women and LGBTQ remain underprivileged even today!

samir,

In theory you can get the right colour temperature with LED
Having said that, I am far from an expert in photography and merely asking if LED has served in the photography space

Your question highlights an important element of the Fediverse
Our instance is run by the business so this topic really has no impact on us and I assume most smaller (non-consumer) instances would be in the same spot.
Just like email, we cannot moderate anything outside of our bubble.
The intersection of moderation and protocol freedom is interesting
