How the system works...

(and why we need to change it)

robcornelius,

@breadandcircuses

The only method that will work is violent and bloody revolution.

The problem is that the vast majority of the people who want things to get better are opposed to violence.

So… People put stuff in their robots.txt to “prevent” malicious scraping of their data for machine learning purposes. I hope everybody understands that this is just a “please don’t take my data” sign on the front lawn. We should be creating heaps of adversarial data instead. Data suitable to taint those datasets.

robcornelius,

@nblr

From what I have seen so far the real #content that has been scraped and fed into #LLMs produces #gibberish, sorry #hallucinations.

Perhaps the sum total of human knowledge is gibberish after all. I have always suspected as much.

    Sorry to be that guy but kettlebell handles are meant to be as smooth as possible. Polished bare metal ideally.

    That way they don't chew up your hands quite as much when you do exercises like cleans where the 'bell moves in your hand

    robcornelius,

    @silentbeauties

    I dont mind the calluses so much but the only time I used kettlebells with rubberised handles they tore the calluses off.

    I know "no pain, no gain" and all butt.....

    If you have any skills or talents that you can use to try to avert the coming #climatecatastrophe then get off your arse and do something.

    Thats not saying "I will fly less and recycle more". Its coming freely together with other people to come up with new ideas and inventions to sort things out. If we can come up with #opensource software like #Linux then we can come up with open source solutions to #software and #hardware problems to help everyone

    Its not just #scientists, #engineers and the like. If you are good at say editing #video or #audio you can help make content promoting the other people creating new technology. #Economists, #politicians and more can come up with #equitable and fair means of generating money with the new #technologies. They can also tax the rich motherfuckers until the pips squeak to pay for them too.

    Anything else is fiddling while Rome burns.

    robcornelius,

    @shekinahcancook

    Then we have to prepare ourselves and our children for the future to come.

    For now we use the high tech tools we have to design better low tech tools we can make with what we will have in the future.

    Learning new skills and relearning old ones will be vital.

    That might mean learning to forge scrap steel into new tools. It might mean finding ways to implement equitable and fair social systems. It might be breeding new varieties of drought resistant plants. It might be working on medicenes that don't need to be chilled. It might be listening to people on the margins of society and learning from what we hear. It might be any one of millions of things.

    One of the most important things right now is persuading others that people like you and I are in the right and getting them to join us. If we can't do that then we are truely fucked my friend.

    robcornelius,

    @shekinahcancook

    Youtube is the best resource for all of this. While it lasts that is. John Plant is learning to smelt iron from the iron eating bacteria in the bottom of a creek. He is really good at pottery now too. He shows us all how to do it. There are literally thousands of wood working and metal working channels. Not sure about chemical processes but I bet there are plenty

    All that information is in youtube. Its just getting it out of youtube and into peoples heads all around the world before its too late.

    You might like to look at this too. These guys know what they are talking about.

    Plastics are new. Just a blip thats ending any day soon. So are fossil fuels. We have to treat them like that NOW

    robcornelius,

    @UncensoredNews

    I rant and rave on line. I try to make sense of what I see in front of me.

    If I inspire you to want to make a change then I have had a good month at the least.

    I do more than that when I can. I learn practical skills and try to make useful things. I try to pass on that knowledge. Thats vital in my humble opinion.

    It doesn't matter what you do, or how small it is. Do something. Do what you can, when you can. Thats all we can do.

    robcornelius,

    @shekinahcancook
    i reckon with a few basic wood working skills and a grounding in blacksmithing I will become a KING if I live long enough.

    Of course as an anarchist I don't want to be a king and despise the concept of heirarchies but you know what I mean.

    robcornelius,

    @shekinahcancook

    Of course the thought of driving the last of the V8 interceptors across the barren wastelands of Southern England is all that keeps me going....

    robcornelius,

    @shekinahcancook @iwein

    The current system has got us into this catastrophe. We have to either eat the rich or just ignore them and captialism and do our own thing.

    robcornelius,

    @RhinosWorryMe @shekinahcancook

    So many people are so close to doing something useful but don't go the extra step.

    Something like blacksmithing will be vital when the contents of the slurry pit gets stuck in the air conditioning.

    There are loads of people who learn the basics of blacksmithing and just make over priced knives instead of going the whole way and learning to make tools. You can't blame them. There is no money to be made making things like spades, chisels and parts for ploughs. There are always people willing to pay 100's of times over the odds for a fancy knife.

    In a similar vein we don't need people like Rimmer when his anger was taken away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WgUktfdDy4 But its hard to get away from people like that at community events. Well meaning arseholes who wouldn't know what to do with a real emergency.

    robcornelius,

    @shekinahcancook @iwein

    Not to sound like Pol Pot but I think using vast numbers of humans doing labour in the fields to replace industrial agricultural machinery will be not too far away. There are not enough horses to do the job or skilled horse men and women either.

    If you have many, many refugees that need feeding then getting them to work the land in order to eat is better than leaving them to starve.

    I have said it before and I will say it again. I want to live in a Ghibli world.

    A nice peaceful village in rural japan surrounded by paddy fields and wooded hills and mountains. I could work from home in a nice light airy house with a garden to grow vegetables in.

    The presence of large furry genius loci / Shinto kami is not 100% required but would be welcome.

    kroc, (edited ) to UI

    We have reached the “Late Stage Microwave” era of software #UI / #UX. NOBODY likes the way their microwave works; It’ll have a numpad or a dial, but not both, and it defaults to weight mode (who even uses that!?). The interface is based on off the shelf parts and has nothing to do with the user experience. The ROM code was written in 1992 and it is never going to be improved — but the chassis is available in white, black or a colour you don’t like!

    robcornelius,

    @kroc

    High end microwaves with fancy features are a waste of time. You try them out when you buy them, realise that the fancy stuff doesn't work well. You go back to zapping things for a minute or two at a time.

    I believe they based the design of MS Office on one

    The entire fucking government in microcosm.
    Sunak and The Seven Bins - A Grimm Bastards story in two parts. In which the relevant government department issues guidance directly refuting the Prime Minister's speech.
    " ... so whilst it was never the case that seven bins would be needed by households, this new plan ensures it."
    There is SO MUCH I could say about those three paragraphs. Fucking word salad is the nicest of them.

    The fossil fuel era is ending, none too soon, and the only people who refuse to acknowledge it are those who profit by the despoliation of the planet.
