And we have lift off!

Cool model, but the build was a bit repetitive around the middle. The launch tower consists of essentially the same floor repeated 10 times with minor differences. Building the actual rocket was maybe a tenth of the overall thing.

The actuated umbilicals are cool and there are a lot of details on the tower and pad.

    @aetataureate And if it was only about the age difference between adults in a consensual relationship, then I see no difference between that and, say, a gay relationship.

    Maybe instead of of publishing private communication, think about starting an actual conversation with me next time.

    React, Electron, and LLMs have a common purpose: the labour arbitrage theory of dev tool popularity: https://www.baldurbjarnason.com/2024/react-electron-llms-labour-arbitrage/

    rnlf,
    @rnlf@dosgame.club avatar

    @baldur Some lines hit really close to home. After years of "we need to hire more people to do this right" and equally many years of "we can't afford that, CTO won't give us the budget", reading something like "They will let their own businesses suffer by shipping substandard software because they believe they can recoup those losses at your expense." is really painful to bear.

    rnlf,
    @rnlf@dosgame.club avatar

    @baldur One thing I'm not certain about is what makes one piece of technology "okay", say, a C++ compiler, but others problematic, like a web component framework? Both do essentially the same, encapsulate knowledge and hide the dirty details from the developer.

    It's easier to hire C++ programmers than assembler programmers - yet I don't think many developers would say we should go back to hand written assembly.

    Is it only about how managers see these tools?

    rnlf,
    @rnlf@dosgame.club avatar

    @baldur In the early days, C compilers would produce objectively worse code than assembly written by an expert.

    That has changed drastically over time, is this the big difference?

    I'm not a web person, so maybe I'm asking dumb questions, but is the issue that things like React don't actually go through the same evolution of becoming better than their hand-written predecessors?

    rnlf,
    @rnlf@dosgame.club avatar

    @baldur That makes sense. C took away the need for people specialized in Assembly, and often the same people would be quite knowledgeable about different hardware platforms. So C only really abstracted away a single specialization.

    Thanks for the clarification!

    I've been thinking about starting up some low-key streaming again. Not full-on "heeeeey guys, welcome to another episode of [blah-blah]; heyyyy, [whoever], thanks so much for the sub; come on, let's get that next milestone, woo-hoo" streaming. Just low-key evening streams where I chime in whenever there's something interesting happening but otherwise just a chill "background noise" kinda stream. Mostly because I want to record gameplay footage but I need some kind of excuse to get me going.

    rnlf,
    @rnlf@dosgame.club avatar

    @Tijn @sqhistorian @dosgameclub I considered doing the same, but don't want to be humiliated by how many fewer viewers (7 vs 0 😂) I'd get

    Interesting, I'm going through all the instances we limited federation with because of the spam wave. The majority has closed their registrations and dealt with the spam.

    But I also found two servers that updated to 4.2.8 but still have open registrations and haven't deleted the old spam.

    How do you show the rest of the fediverse that you just don't care one bit? At least we know to stay away from them now.

    rnlf, to random
    @rnlf@dosgame.club avatar

    Am I imagining things or has the spam wave actually stopped? It's been 20h since I last got a report and all formerly spamming instances I check that still have the spam posts didn't receive any new ones in the last 13h either.

    How do you deal with this? Leave the limited federation active in case it starts again? Did I miss any news about this?

    rnlf,
    @rnlf@dosgame.club avatar

    @jenbanim Oof, luckily none of this happened to us.

    How do you check if they are being moderated again? Manually going through the list of blocks? There's a hundred servers on my block list now, going through all of them would take hours.

    I wonder if we need some sort of community maintained automatic block list.

    The big wave of spams is over? Thank you FediAdmins for doing what you do!

    rnlf,
    @rnlf@dosgame.club avatar

    @davidrevoy I think the spammers just... stopped?

    I checked several spam instances and many still have their spam posts but none had any new spam created in the last 14h. Everything seems to halt the exact same second everywhere.

    I don't think we really won, yet.

    I am a small server operator. It’s now been at least four days that this spam problem continues to be an issue.

    By now, every admin should be taking steps to mitigate spam. If you aren’t taking necessary steps, I may have to make some #Fediblock recommendations.

    I will give you all a few more days to get your houses in order. After which, I will be adding URLs to #Fediblock.

    rnlf,
    @rnlf@dosgame.club avatar

    @atomicpoet Honestly, this is the only solution. Every single spam message we received was from accounts that were at least a day old and had posted nearly 2000 spam messages in that time.

    This is a strong indicator that these instances are entirely unmoderated which is a really good reason to limit federation with them.

    every week someone inevitably boosts a toot complaining about how forums have all disappeared after the galaxy went into decline in 2007 which also coincided with their 19th birthday and their last good coldplay experience

    this is a shout out to @dosgameclub who not only maintains an active set of forums, but does so with a gorgeous MS-DOS mode co80 theme last seen in dosshell

    thank you for resisting the decline of trantor and keeping the old ways alive instead of complaining about it 🙏

    @vga256 @dosgameclub The decline of Trantor you say, so we're the Foundation!

    I can live with that 😎

    We try to live the old ways with forums and IRC instead of unnavigable Discord servers and closed systems that some billionaire can buy and turn into whatever they please.

    Thanks for the shoutout and I'm happy you like the design!

    I am currently editing our @dosgameclub episode about Donkey Island with @yozy, @emmxyzzy and @sonneveld, that I sadly couldn't participate in - and I think this is such a cool discussion about the game and how the English translation came to be.

    I'm kinda sad now I missed it but then again I wouldn't have had much to contribute.

    @rnlf@dosgame.club avatar

    @dosgameclub @yozy @emmxyzzy @sonneveld Or maybe I would have! There's a lot of talk about the original German translation of the game and if nothing else, I'm the clubs resident German 😅

    installing arch is fun. and I mean specifically the kind of fun I had back in 2002 when I had a slackware ISO and nothing better to do with my time

    rnlf,
    @rnlf@dosgame.club avatar

    @foone The real question is, why did you try it in the first place?

    I do like to complain about Windows and macOS a lot, but mostly because other people make me use them.

    I doubt anyone forces you to use Arch, so why bother? There are so many other systems to pick from, many with a reputation of being easy to use.

    Arch is good at one thing, that's customizability. Customizability comes at a price. If you don't need that or are not willing to pay the price, why bother?

    Holy crap, I found a temperature conversion app I made as a teenager back in the year 2000.

    By "found" I mean someone archived it and put it in a bundle of "small apps" on their website as a download.
