just watched @tenderlove's stream with Maxime on adding an optimization to #YJIT for Array#pack and it's pretty cool, if you have ~1 hour it's a good way to spend it.

@phastidio in Ungheria già hanno rilanciato, niente finanziaria fino a Novembre perché "se eleggono Trump si fa la pace e cambia tutto", inutile farlo ora.

riffraff,

@TarkabarkaHolgy oh I had never heard of Twisted Metal. Is the story conclusive? I am put off by shows that take years to finish and never answer the questions and just get shitty over time (lost, fringe) or just get cancelled mid-plot (peripheral!)

When Lebunius preached at the pagan Westphalians during one of their festivals, and admonished them to abandon their heathen ways, they rose up and tried to slay him.

Honestly, I do not condone this, but I DO understand.

riffraff,

@juergen_hubert @germany @folklore Terry Pratchett had this great idea in "Eric" where one goes to the afterlife they believe in, so not knowing about (christian) hell automatically saves you from it "and this is why it's a good idea to kill missionaries on sight".
Looks like Westphalians were on the same boat.

I've grudgingly come around to the notion that there is only one way out of the ransomware problem: Make paying a ransom illegal. This is not very different from laws that make it illegal for US companies to pay bribes to foreign officials.

I really don't see any other way out of this mess. Yes, some victims will unfortunately ignore any laws that say they can't pay, but enforcement probably will not be hard.

What will be difficult are the situations where peoples' lives are at stake in ransomware incidents This sounds callous, but we can't afford to take the short view here anymore, and our other alternatives aren't great either.

I'm quite certain this is an unpopular view, but we have already seen the cost of doing nothing. At least in the interests of congruity for our financial sanctions vs Russia, we should probably make this change sooner rather than later.

riffraff,

@kurtseifried @briankrebs

Italy had rampant kidnapping problems and put up regulations that freeze a family's funds to prevent paying ransom. It basically fixed the issue decades ago.

riffraff,

@TarkabarkaHolgy still better than the orrszi porszi. I don't know how Hungary came up with the idea of VACUUMING A SCREAMING CHILD'S NOSTRILS.
I have PTSD as a parent.

Letting my otaku show, but I really love Pluto on Netflix. Probably one of the best anime I've ever seen. The show is great on its own, but this article makes it better: https://www.polygon.com/23933966/pluto-best-anime-netflix-watch-it (also I'm not much of a manga reader otherwise I'd probably have know this show would be a banger)

riffraff,

@tenderlove I had no idea what this was about but then I had the "wait that's Astro boy!" moment and I started paying even more attention.
It's surprisingly solid, given Netflix track of subpar Anime-ish productions (IMVHO)

Red hair was said to be a sign of witchcraft in Christian Europe, and was often enough for a witch finder to pronounce guilt on someone. The Malleus Maleficarum identifies witches as having red hair and green eyes.

riffraff,

@raymccarthy @FinnFolklorist not sure it was mostly English.
A saying in central Italy was "rosci e cani pezzati/ammazzali appena nati" (redheads and spotted dogs/killed them as soon as born).
A masterpiece of Italian verist literature is "Rosso Malpelo" ("Evil-haired Red").
Verga captures the folk xenophobic mental short circuit perfectly: "he was called evil-haired cause he was red headed, and he was red headed cause he was a malicious kid who'd turn out evil".

why did the 90s have so many great underrated SF movies?
Strange Days, Dark City, The 13th Floor, Contact, Event Horizon, Nirvana, eXistenZ...
And so many successful ones too.
Why was that decade so great?

I'll make this a thread and share some stories.

@TarkabarkaHolgy I think it may have gone beyond Chinese alchemy.
IIRC mercury was popular in European alchemy too, and Newton famously had mercury poisoning.

Every time I hear "may the force be with you" my brain automatically says "and also with you" despite having not been church in 20+ years

riffraff,

@tenderlove it's the same for me in Italian "la forza sia con te" / "e con il tuo spirito", and I'm not even sure they still say that in Church these days.

I wonder how much Lucas thought about it.
