The New York/Dublin portal would be more impressive if I weren’t posting this from a handheld device that can connect to anywhere in the world via video chat.

@shantini I read this as a dubstep reference, but then I realized you might mean WWDC. 🤣

So, no surprise to anyone, but #DigitalOcean’s #Sammy #AI assistant gives incorrect information about their services.

It told me that it’s possible to move a volume to a different region by first creating a snapshot of the volume and then creating it as a new volume in the other region. This is apparently incorrect. No big loss for me, but I can’t imagine trusting that service with any other data/storage-related questions.

A lot of people* ask me "if you still DJed now Jim, what on earth would it sound like?" Well, I sold my decks earlier this year, so that's never happening again, but Spotify does exist. This is what it would sound like

@SecondeJ @grmpyprogrammer I’m only 2 minutes into it, and I love it.

When do the ferrets show up?

ramsey,

@SecondeJ @grmpyprogrammer 10 minutes in, now. Can I hire you as my personal DJ?

Seriously. This is the stuff I love.

So, why did Matrix decide to create a brand new federated communications spec over working with XMPP? https://autonomous.zone/@bamfic/112516709699999473

ramsey, to Matrix
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

It’s so difficult (and expensive) to run a #Matrix #Synapse server for my own domain. Is it worth it?

I started out wanting to support Matrix, and I've set up a number of channels for my community on Matrix, but everything happens on Discord and IRC right now, and we have a bridge between Discord and IRC, but we can't bridge to Matrix at the moment, so is it even worth it to keep maintaining a separate Matrix presence?

If not, I’m just gonna shut it down. I don’t want to spend the money.

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@ericmann That’s my question.

I’m wondering if maybe it makes more sense to run an XMPP server.

ramsey, (edited )
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@josh @austin I mentioned the bridge, but the bridge (to/from Matrix) wasn’t something I ran (though I’ve tried and couldn’t get it working). We had some PHP community channels bridged to IRC, but since that bridge is gone, it’s kept those communities separate, and I’ve been looking for a solution. (I run a separate bridge between Discord and IRC, and so Matrix was bridged to Discord through IRC, as a result.)

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@josh @austin Unfortunately, this isn’t my first hiccup with Matrix, and I’ve tried setting up the other projects mentioned, as well, over the years, each with varying degrees of frustration. I think I just have to face the fact that I’m just not able to get these things working properly, and that’s on me.

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@austin It’s not boding well for my abilities to run Conduit that I can’t download their Stable/Main files because they respond with 404s. https://docs.conduit.rs/deploying/generic.html#installing-conduit

“For most millennials, the old material markers of midlife, like owning a home or spending 20-plus years at one job, are a nostalgic fantasy. Even as we negotiate gray hairs and a changing body, little has changed in our career, home, and money prospects.” https://www.thecut.com/article/millennials-midlife-crisis-money-job-security.html

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@taylorlorenz I identify as a Xennial. I was laid off in November from a company of ~100 employees. For my entire career, I’ve never worked for a company much larger (usually much smaller), & I’ve averaged about 3-4 years everywhere I’ve worked (since 2000).

I was hired at a company of ~20k employees. Many’ve been here 15-20 years. I brought the average tenure on my team way down. The next least-tenured person has been here for 7 years. It’s a very strange environment for me.

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@taylorlorenz But, you know what? I love it. I love how simple things are. It’s not the start-up rat race. People stick around here because they enjoy the work they do, and they knock off at 5pm and live their lives. That’s very different to me.

I do own a home (this is the second for me), but maybe I’m closer to Gen X than a Millenial. My sister (born in 81) owns a home, and my brother (84) has owned 3 homes, and his current one has an in-ground pool. Very weird!

I found myself needing to write tests for code that throw an exception with domain-specific information. I actually need access to the exception thrown in my test. So, I created a testing utility that will do just that.

https://github.com/cspray/assert-throws

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@cspray Nice! I usually end up having to catch it and then assert on what was caught but also make sure there’s an assertion after that to ensure there was, in fact, an exception thrown.

A single-user server should not require so many resources to run. 1 vCPU and 1 GB of RAM should be plenty.
