    #Jetpack will no longer auto-share blog posts to #Twitter!

    This is because Automattic, the company the owns Jetpack, was not able to come to a "good faith" agreement with Twitter about access to their API.

    However, there's also good news.

    In the same blog post, Automattic announced that auto-sharing of blog posts is coming to #Mastodon!

    https://jetpack.com/blog/the-end-of-twitter-auto-sharing/

    petrescatraian,

    @atomicpoet well, they already added Mastodon verification to their Gravatar service (that's how I verified my account, lol). It would be really handy if they would add verification and resharing to their products on other fediverse platforms (just duplicating the existing service and changing the visual part would be fine I guess), as this would allow one to:

    • Verify multiple fediverse accounts on various platforms
    • Crosspost on a Friendica page (as you can create a news or organization page here on Friendica - just like on Facebook)

    Not sure if this will create a new spike already, but now Mastodon/the Fediverse do have another unexpected advantage. Who will now say that search here is not that useful?

    @nova (admin of .io) has abruptly called it quits from the fediverse and handing admin of the instance over to the nivenly foundation she created.

    Seems there’s a context here that I and many aren’t aware of.

    this is a(nother) story of admin burn out. Specifically, @nova seems to have real critiques of the fediverse (there’s a lack of inter-communication between sub-communities).

    But handing off to a non-profit for the win.

    petrescatraian,

    @torb @nova @maegul in the end, only companies/organisations will be owning larger instances, while individuals will only be hosting stuff to themselves. Or maybe their close friends as well (just like email)

    petrescatraian,

    @_ed @Berserkware They could have chosen a different wording though: instead of choose your own server they should have better said choose a different server and add a small ℹ️ button with a small pop-up explaining the fact that Mastodon works differently than other social media networks and in what way (briefly). By saying your own it implies that the user should already own a server (hence your own) instead of letting them know that they have a choice.

    Tokodon is a Mastodon for Linux that's been gaining fanfare. It's excellent for managing multiple accounts.

    I had no idea Tokodon was made by the official KDE team.

    It looks beautiful -- even if the UI is a tad text heavy.

    Personally, I like text. It lets you know exactly what you're doing. Too much abstraction through icons does not make good usability.

    petrescatraian,

    @atomicpoet It does look like other KDE apps tho FWIW

    petrescatraian,

    @sexy_peach does that include tram (streetcar) tracks as well? 😂😂

    petrescatraian,

    @PolandIsAStateOfMind Hah! I know, just kidding. But probably on such a map you'd have various dots representing the cities that partially or totally ripped off their tracks (or rendered them abandoned)

    Thanks for publicly suggesting this group, @atomicpoet. Looking forward for some interesting stuff 😁

    petrescatraian,

    @atomicpoet I didn't find any group for post-rock music, so I created one myself at @postrock. Feel free to share your favourite music there.

    @fediverse What type of social media do you feel is lacking most in the fediverse?

    To elaborate, there are a lot of different types of social media already on the fediverse such as microblogs, regular blogs, image sharing, link sharing and video sharing.

    Personally, I'd love to see a gaming-focused social media platform on the fediverse.

    petrescatraian,

    @ch0ccyra1n I personally miss an alternative to iMDB

    petrescatraian,

    @dave are you looking for something like Friendica?
    @ch0ccyra1n

    petrescatraian,

    @remcoboerma What's wrong with PHP? 😁 I'm not that much of a techie

    @remcoboerma
    I see. That makes sense 😁

    @dave @ch0ccyra1n

    petrescatraian,

    @carl @ch0ccyra1n There are Wordpress plugins that allow websites to be followed as ActivityPub accounts.

    So Google is now preventing people from removing location data from photos taken with Pixel phones.

    Remember when Google's corporate motto was "don't be evil?"

    Obviously, accurate location data on photos is more useful to a data mining operation like Google.

    From Google: "Important: You can only update or remove estimated locations. If the location of a photo or video was automatically added by your camera, you can't edit or remove the location."

    It's enshitification in action.

    petrescatraian,

    Thank god I no longer use their service after their unlimited option was cut. I was only using it as a backup solution, as I still prefer keeping stuff on my computer, rather than uploading to the cloud. I use #Shotwell to manage my photos and before that, I was using Windows Live Gallery while I was still on Windows (If anyone remembers). It was a really powerful and underrated piece of software, albeit proprietary, that was doing pretty much the same things as Google Photos is doing now - but locally, on the computer that you own (yea, I do sound like I am older than I actually am, maybe I am, in some regards, haha - but reading all these news about how Google is manipulating user data is just infuriating).

    petrescatraian,

    @Kay_Angel I don't know that much about development, but from what I see, the mods to the official apps are just that: mods

    If you're on a device with limited space (say 16 GB internal storage), you'd definitely not wanna run a "reddit vanced"

    @darylsun

    petrescatraian,

    "This university has a bad habit of enforcing proprietary software and doing little research on the free alternatives. Free software has always been better and easier to use. It's hard to study when you can't agree with invasive EULAs," states Zehra Irem Kuyucu, one of the affected students.

    Many universities are like that. I heard from students younger than me that they are now using Google software in my former university as well since the pandemic.

    petrescatraian,

    @ailiphilia yep. So they can get used harder with the alternatives once they grow up.

    petrescatraian,

    This sucks. Some people (including me, until sometime the following days) still have smartphones with abismally low amounts of storage. Getting alternative clients for anything is just vital in these cases (and Reddit does not offer a "lite" version of its app, like other vendors do).

    Hope I will still be able to use the one I'm currently on or get used to the official app.
