How come there are like a dozen things in #Colorado named St. Vrain?

Stanford University police arrested a journalist covering a protest there. This is illegal. California law bars police from doing this.

Will there be accountability?

Here’s a deeply reported piece by Eli Salsow in the New York Times, in which he spends time with a county election clerk in a small Nevada town with 620 voters: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/06/us/politics/nevada-election-clerk-trump.html?unlocked_article_code=1.xk0.Wsdw.1RH-Oz4t3SH0&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare&sgrp=c-cb (gift)

The county’s Trump voters are incensed that he won by only 82% in 2020 …

… so they try to recall the election clerk, Cindy Elgan

Many are close friends of the clerk, but imbibe a diet of online-conspiracy posts, so they’ve turned on her

Here’s a sample of what one believes

@clive it’s heartbreaking that this clerk discovers that people chose to believe conspiracy garbage instead of the person they’ve known for years.

Call it the battle of the voice assistants. A Tech Radar editor tested Apple’s Siri against Google Gemini and Samsung’s Bixby. He made a list of 25 tasks he expected the AI to complete and graded them all on each. One of them easily outdid the others. Take a guess as to which one it was. https://flip.it/gqv-IQ

Just met with an advisor at school…

I only have to take one more class to graduate! Looks like I’l get my associate degree by the end of the summer if everything moves apace.

I was under the impression that I had to take one elective and one phys ed course (yes, really), but this extremely kind advisor finessed the system in my favor. Apparently there is a way to waive 0.5 phys ed credits at a time based on past enrollment. I still needed 0.5 more, but she got the school to waive that too.

@Dylan oh good, it’s good when an advisor can solve problems instead of simply informing you of them.

Being in the office I get to eavesdrop on obnoxious conversations. Like some boomer bragging to his colleague that he saved a couple hundred bucks buying his daughter a Lenovo instead of the MacBook she asked for.

He went on and on about how his daughter is ungrateful and only cares about the latest trends.

Christ. Setting aside the misogyny-tinged paternalism, just spend the extra money and get her what she asked for. It’s a computer for college. It’s not like she demanded a new BMW.

I’m not saying this because I don’t know the value of a dollar. Nor am I some huge Apple fan. That company hasn’t made a product I wanted in years.

When I went to college my grandmother bought me a Windows laptop. I returned it for credit, combined with my savings from my after-school job, and bought an iBook.

Though I admit I bought it because “ooh, shiny”, I learned more from OS X Terminal than I ever did with Windows. That’s what made me so comfortable learning Linux.

Alright, lots of heavy discussions today, so let's talk about something silly!

What is a movie that always makes you laugh?

Personal pick:

Anything Mel Brooks, but Robin Hood: Men in Tights, it's just funny every time I watch it.

Criterion is releasing Bound (1996) on 4K this June, at least in the US, where it's been unavailable for quite some time. I think it's one of the best, if not the best, neo-noir film I've seen.

Here’s my review from 2022.
