Just saw a Temu ad for a car dashcam with a monitor you strap over the top of your rear-view mirror, fully obstructing it 😅

@annika that's how they get you to buy the optional rear view cam?

I went hunting for an abandoned keyboard at the office and found someone's old gaming mechanical keyboard. CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK. now I just need to figure out how to setup the cool backlight effects.

@lzg When I got laid off, one of the first things I did was to buy clackly mechanical keyboard. I'm unemployed, but by the sound of my keys, I am crushing it

The promise of the creator/passion economy is simple: follow your dream, work hard, and you'll achieve financial freedom while never working a day in your life.

But the reality is far more complex.

The emergence of the "side hustle" culture is part of a troubling trend - corporations are raking in record profits while wages stagnate.

    And it's no coincidence.

@Daojoan I thought that when I retired, I'd be a small little bubble on the passion economy ocean, but holy crap, that stuff looks exactly like work!

Honest talk? Apple Stores are pretty, but not well designed for the purposes they serve. They would work better accepting the sales-service dichotomy like a car dealer.

Yes, leave us in the showroom when we need our phone fixed to look at the new shit, but don’t park us waiting on someone with no way to know when we are going to be helped and scared if we go look at the new shiny they won’t find us.

@schwa 🙋‍♂️ I've been using on my MacBook & iPad:
It's pretty good on the iPad given that I use it mostly to consume media. Useful when using only the MBP 13" screen.

On large screens it's opinionated with the wrong opinions. Even so it's one of the better app-window-grouping tool I've used

Any theories on the underlying psychology or other drivers of the tendency folk have in tech to prioritise completeness / technical correctness even when it makes a thing less usable or valuable?

Is it a need for control, or a need to believe the world is knowable? Risk aversion?

Is it the result of organisational cultures where folk are encouraged only to see the parts and not the whole?

    I am fascinated by this!

    pborenstein,

@sue The indignation sounds like Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria. As you say, it probably has to do with psychological safety.

over the years, I've chalked it up to

    • fear of blame for leaving something out
    • discomfort with leaving something unfinished
    • comfort with current problem and afraid to look at next project

There’s a weekend in 1988 when Charles Schulz changed the way he put tone on Franklin’s face from cross-hatching to a dot pattern. Why? No one is quite certain. I’ll be looking into the representation and reproduction of non-racist portrayals of people of color in my book, How Comics Were Made, currently in crowdfunding. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/glennf/how-comics-were-made

I've spoken to cartoonists about how they draw themselves and characters of color as well as historians and academics.

Franklin (right) and Charlie Brown in three cartoon panels of Peanuts. Franklin’s face is tinted using a dot pattern (sometimes incorrectly called a halftone).

    pborenstein,
    @pborenstein@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf Not a comics expert. The cross-hatch pattern reads to me as embarrassment. Maybe Schulz wanted to make a distinction?
