Finished watching Sugar on AppleTV last night and why the fuck aren't more people talking about this on my timeline?? I don't want to spoil anything so I'll just tell you to go watch it, especially if you like noir.

@rebeccawatson OK, that's a good rec. Have you watched Ripley? What did you think if you did?

Just saw a Temu ad for a car dashcam with a monitor you strap over the top of your rear-view mirror, fully obstructing it 😅

@annika that's how they get you to buy the optional rear view cam?

Any theories on the underlying psychology or other drivers of the tendency folk have in tech to prioritise completeness / technical correctness even when it makes a thing less usable or valuable?

Is it a need for control, or a need to believe the world is knowable? Risk aversion?

Is it the result of organisational cultures where folk are encouraged only to see the parts and not the whole?

    I am fascinated by this!

    pborenstein,
    @pborenstein@mastodon.social avatar

@sue The indignation sounds like Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria. As you say, it probably has to do with psychological safety.

over the years, I've chalked it up to

    • fear of blame for leaving something out
    • discomfort with leaving something unfinished
    • comfort with current problem and afraid to look at next project

I'm not saying they're remembering it wrong, but riding in a car without seatbelts, while your parents smoked and argued with the windows closed, was not the joyride the memes would have you believe

Last night in SF and is next door. The stress of three days of meetings melted away, and I only visited 2 floors. Apparently first Thursday is free for local SFians. The plague did a number on SF, but this is a jewel.

I've been working remotely for over 10 years. But if someone really wanted to get me back in the office five days a week, they'd just have to replace what I already have. Easy peasy.

    • my own office
    • my own door
    • my own light switch
    • on-demand door-to-door transportation every day

    "Yeah, I suppose."

"What were the memes like back then?"

"Sweetie, you know there was no internet then."

    "But every culture has memes."

This was the only thing I could think of, and it occurs to me that commercials were the memes of that era.
