12 Do you reread things you wrote some time ago? How do they stand up today?

Yes, I do. Sometimes I searching x thing and I find an old notebook. I then read it to see if there's one or two good ideas I can recycle. Most of the time there's more than that. The writing itself goes from "I can't believe I wrote this crap!" to "I can't believe I wrote this gold-laced crap!", with a few "Wow, this is cool! Did I really write this?" =)

Most hasn't aged well, though…=)

#WritersCoffeeClub #Writing 10. Do you have favorite words you like to use? What are they?

The general rule is no. No matter how much I like a word I try not to overuse it in writing. That being said my characters sometimes have favorite words, usually mild to explicit expletives that they may use. But again, I try to keep down to a level that is character-building not monotonous.

Tomo is very fond of the word kabai which is an all-purpose word that can be used for anything.

@NaraMoore yeah, it remains me a fun fact. People from south of France often uses “Putain, con(g)” (litt: “whore, jerk”) as ponctuation. With their accent it doesn’t sound offensive. But during my military obligations, the sergeant insisted that people have to be polite when speaking to him. And one guy behind me just said “Oh, putain, cong, je suis mal barré, putain, cong” (Litt: “I’m fucked”)

Apr 5 SC POV: Who is your favorite person to be around?

Gunild: I like to be around Katja. She reminds me of my youngest daughter, with that beautiful auburn hair. And she's still so much a child, her head between the stars most of the time.
She doesn't see what I see, how the men look at her - she is simply blind in that regard.
I need to protect her. That ghastly old husband of hers is no real protection.
(But don't tell her I said that!)

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

@anderlandbooks it’s even worse for Esther, as her husband (who is more in his 70’s) has very bad plans for her… but he’ll quickly get what he deserves too!

#writerscoffeeclub 01/04/2024 What's your favourite easter egg in your own work and/or another work of fiction?

I like to add Easter eggs. Since I suck at naming, I often (re)use actual people/other stories names:

⁃ The Chamberlain are named after Smashing Pumpkins members Jimmy Chamberlain and D’Arcy Wretzky
⁃ Esther (McAlistair) and police officer (O’Brien) names came from the New Albion Tetralogy by Paul Shapera. Great Albion as London is named in my universe is another reference.

#writerscoffeeclub 06/04/2024 What have you learned from past projects that you're using in your WIP?

I participated to several projects that never managed to be successful. One reason is that I wasn’t involved enough. I thought I could not write a story so I relied on authors.
I was not confident enough in me.

I think it partly because those stories were not mine enough so that need to tell them.

So this is what I learned: you can’t do art if you don’t trust in yourself.

#writerscoffeeclub 07/04/2024 Write a poem in no more than 500 characters which describes you as a writer.

Like the plague that consumes her,
It’s devouring me,
I have to tell her story,
Esther

(I always suck at poetry)

#writerscoffeeclub 08/04/2024 Do you think of your books as having a particular length?

Like monoliths in Arthur Clarke's 2001, all books are the same size: "as large as necessary".

Well, not really, I have to deal with my own productivity which leads me to do some cuts in order to be ready in time.

@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

#writerscoffeeclub 09/04/2024 Do you use a dedicated proofreader, or is one provided by your publisher?

I don’t have any proofreader 🙃 #yolo

#writerscoffeeclub 10/04/2024 Do you have favourite words you like to use? What are they?

Madame, Érié, doctor, nightmare, illness. It resumes the story quite good.

#writerscoffeeclub 11/04/2024 How effective are your newsletters in creating sales?

I don’t have one. I wonder what I could say interesting in a newsletter. I already have hard time publishing a post on my own on social networks once a week 🙃

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

#writerscoffeeclub 12/04/2024 Do you reread things you wrote draw some time ago? How do they stand up today?

Let’s interpret this with art instead of writing: I’ve decided to publish regularly old arts for #throwbackThursday (but not this week 🙃) as a way to check my progress. As attachments, some examples of the same art across time.

Esther and Erie 2023 vs 2024: Erie informs Esther that doctors are waiting for her while she’s having her breakfast
Esther and Erie 2023 vs 2024: Erie informs Esther that doctors are waiting for her while she’s having her breakfast, then the maid helps her mistress to prepare
Esther and Erie 2021 vs 2024: the maid helps her mistress to dress, especially with her corset

#writerscoffeeclub 13/04/2024 Which "unfilmable" novel do you think has worked best on screen?

I don’t think there’s really such a thing as unfilmable stories, especially now that CGI can do virtual anything. Also for long/complex stories, series appear to be a good option.

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

#writerscoffeeclub 14/04/2024 Do you keep a log of incidental characters (e.g. shop assistants) or forget them once they've featured?

I try to avoid incidental characters, because each requires some work to define their behaviour and their appearance (so the best answer is probably that I keep a log of every character)

#writerscoffeeclub 15/04/2024 Describe your perfect writing conditions.

The house is calm, the family is sleeping, either it is early in the morning, or late at evening.

Some good music to give me the desired vibes. Currently it’s mostly Altın Gün - here’s an excerpt of the concert I attended last week, Khruangbin or Voices of Baceprot: yes it’s often slow relaxing but sometimes I need something more nervous.

01/04/2024 MC POV: Write a Mastodon introduction post.

I’ve decided to do it with a small comic, reusing customised arts and panels from the 1st issue.

(I wont do this everyday 😅)

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

06/04/2024 Does your MC feel understood? Why/why not?

Esther feels totally misunderstood by nearly everyone, her family, her doctors who can’t find what she suffers of. Everyone except Erie.
Excerpt from the Page 7 of the issue #1: Esther came to seek help from her father. It felt short.
[Edit: add context for the excerpt]

nautilebleu,

07/04/2024 What conflicts (internal and/or external, subtle or grand) are important in your story?

The internal conflict that gnaws at Esther: the evil that devours her from the inside wants to make her sink and she struggles to keep her sanity

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

#wordweavers 08/04/2024 MC POV: Are you happy? Why/why not?

“No, I’m not. Between my family under the control of an abusive father, my boring life after forced marriage to a very old man, and finally, my infection by an evil plague during the event of The Chamberlain’s seminary, I don’t have much reason to be happy.

But there’s a small glimmer of hope: Erie”

[edit: use 1st person because it’s a POV]

The day Esther meets her husband: Esther looks to her father who can’t sustain her look while her future husband is holding her hand with a carnivorous look.
Esther examined by her doctor. Both don’t know what is happening
Erie comforts Esther after she’s done a terrible nightmare

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

#wordweavers 09/04/2024 What powers (e.g. political, religious, corporate, magical, natural, etc.) influence your characters' lives?

⁃ Esther: the thing that tries to corrupt her from the inside
⁃ Erie: the fear of Lady d’Arcy’s stick

Another learning day at The Chamberlain Seminary. Erie with another leonine maid clean a human chair under the sharp eye of Lady d’Arcy who stands in the stairs in a red suit and top hat holding a cane stands on the right. The chair seems to suffer, or maybe it is ecstatic?

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

#wordweavers 10/04/2024 How much power does your MC have?

Initially Esther has no power because she fights the evil thing in her. Then after an event that will leave her helpless, she will abandon herself to the evil thing, gaining lots of power: she can connect & control other people perverted like her, but the infection being only partial thanks to Erie’s intervention, they can’t do the same. The evil can cure her from most injuries: in a fight her forearms will be cut, but they will regrow.

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

#wordweavers 11/04/2024 How much power does your antagonist have?

Lady d’Arcy has access to different powers:

⁃ By her marriage with Sir James, she’s been introduced to the aristocracy. Sir James was also wealthy.
⁃ Being a sociopath, she uses their position and their money to gain more power, by manipulating, bribing and blackmailing.
⁃ Smart and without any moral limits, she developed in interest into dark magic and science, mixing the twos to gain even more power.
(1/2)

Excerpt from Inktober 2020: Lady d’Arcy participating to a black mass with the top aristocrats (including Sir James)
Excerpt from Inktober 2020: old Lady d’Arcy trying to recover her youth conducting twisted scientific experiments mixed with dark magic. She’s helped by Sir James

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

#wordweavers 12/04/2024 What communities play a role in your story?

  • Esther dysfunctional family is where her temper has been forged
  • The twisted aristocracy around the Chamberlain allow Lady d’Arcy to gain power before forcing them to exile
  • The Chamberlain seminary: Lady d’Arcy’s tool comeback & where Erie has been shaped into a maid
  • The medical congregation with doc Joyce, Jekyll & Moreau, plus Esther family doctor
  • Esther home, with Erie: this community of 2 is the heart of the story
nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

#wordweavers 13/04/2024 What are some of the tropes typical in your genre? Do you use them?

Tropes of the old fashioned horror stories from the 19th like Island of Dr Moreau, Dracula, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mister Hyde

⁃ The MC is a male ⛔️
⁃ The antagonist is a male ⛔️
⁃ The women are absent or mostly useless ⛔️
⁃ The story is about the good/morality vs bad/immorality ⛔️

That’s said Carmillia doesn’t respect those tropes too

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

#wordweavers 14/04/2024 Is your MC spontaneous, or a planner?

Esther never really had the control of her life, so i would say spontaneous, as she just reacts to the situations that impose themselves on her
