Yikes - this looks like a pretty serious issue. Especially considering high chance that the original author of the package might have been behind the backdoor attempt.

I know quite a few #bioinformatics packages also need xz for compilation. Hate that we need to worry about stuff like this more from now on.

Google: #Linux based Chromebooks will get 10 years of automatic updates. This may be the year of the Linux desktop. LOL. ChromeOS is not 100% open source. It comes with many blobs too including #privacy issues. https://blog.google/outreach-initiatives/education/automatic-update-extension-chromebook/ Chromebooks continue to be popular in the USA, especially among schools.

@futurebird Korean sounds a lot like that - one of the first things taught to kids new to US schools is to not call teachers teacher (which would be an honorific if used in the Korean way). Same goes for other job title examples in your toot.

@molly0xfff when I taught basic restriction cloning to kids too poor to have lab access (that's 12+ years ago now), I couldn't have imagined how pathetic 'biohackers' of 2023 would turn out to be. Or that people would really take away from teaching labs to fund glorified all natural viagra projects. Or that the media would sit by and gawk at all of it happening.

As convenient it might be for some, I think it's time to really drop chrome/ium browser usage and push the alternatives.

DRM'd web will make current tech monopolies look like a joke - it will genuinely wipe away many things we've built; open research, libraries, archives, communities and discussions.
