Professor (Ecology). Our lab at Freie Universität Berlin is interested in soil, global change, biodiversity, and fungi.

I'm also active on youtube, making videos on life in academia.

New substack post on the intrinsic/ inherent shape of a fungus.

Yep, I made that up, but I think it's pretty interesting. Read for yourself....

Happy International Biodiversity Day!

Most people (and evidently, AI) think that biodiversity is all above ground, where we can see it. Think again....most biodiversity is in the soil, and overwhelmingly microbial.

Is there an optimal 'scientific distance' for collaboration, and if so, how do you find it?

Our lab will soon welcome its seventh (!!) Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow; not ever, but concurrently in the lab at the same time.

Amazing! Thanks so much, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation -- one of the best things in German science.

This influx of talent is a game-changer.

If you have a great cv, please feel free to contact me.

We're interested in soil ecology, biodiversity, global change, fungi, mycorrhiza. Lately also impacts of generative AI.

In this week's newsletter I write about the concept of the plastisphere.

In a recent paper we clarified the definition of this term as applicable to soil, and in the post I ask what questions arise from this new view of the plastisphere.

What's more important in terms of doing research on environmental problems?

  • Finding/ discovering an issue
  • Studying the issue
  • Finding solutions and testing them

Really like this quote from Andrea Gibson's recent post (source given in pic).

I think in science we are all too often stuck within a thought assembly line. That can also be productive, but it is important to look for something very different.

What is the best way to do this?

If general chain bookshops are any indication of what people are interested in, it doesn't look good for the natural sciences, including ecology.

What do you think?

If bookshops are any indication of what people are interested in.....they are not interested in natural science.

In every bookshop I've recently visited, the natural sciences section is always in the back and very tiny.

What does that mean?

mrillig,
@mrillig@mastodon.online avatar

@NatureMC I'm sure you're absolutely right. But isn't this in itself a symptom? If having such books is having a risk, then this is already part of the answer. And I mean general-audience science books.

mrillig,
@mrillig@mastodon.online avatar

@NatureMC I'm too shy...

mrillig,
@mrillig@mastodon.online avatar

@NatureMC @christianschwaegerl Yes, I agree with everything you say; but I think you perhaps are missing the point I was trying to make. Why is it that the chain bookshops specialize on and cater to these other interests in the first place.

Sure, everybody can order their books (I do too), but that is not the point. The point is that the mass market doesn't cater very much to that natural science interest.

And I also don't mean specialist bookshops like Zabriskie, but chains/ franchises.

mrillig,
@mrillig@mastodon.online avatar

@NatureMC @christianschwaegerl

Sure, the translation is an issue. I read all my books in English.

But again, the point is the situation in Germany as it presents itself. Are there not enough books written in German for the German market on this topic; which is why there needs to be this wait for translations?

Then why is that?

mrillig,
@mrillig@mastodon.online avatar

@NatureMC Thanks for all your responses. Made me think about everything and I wrote a substack about it, coming out on Thursday. 😀
