As someone who's written code at one time or another in C, C++, Verilog, SystemVerilog, VHDL, GLSL, PHP, JavaScript, Pascal, Oz, Java, Salsa, i386 assembly, PIC12 assembly, MIPS assembly, x86-64 assembly, ARM assembly, Prolog, Bash, VBScript, DOS batch files, FEI AutoScript, CMake, and even a few dozen lines of Python years back...

I can confidently say Rust is alien technology.

Maybe one day I'll grok it but today I feel like I sat down in front of a Klingon PC and tried to understand what it was doing.

People say learning an HDL as a software person is a brain twister? This is 10x more confusing than Verilog was.

They've got about 1.6M MAUs ...
& 0.8M Weekly unique users & 0.340M Daily.

That's not nothing!

Roughly double mastodon and 60% more than the whole fediverse (by MAUs, see fedidb.org).

Bluesky is quite "international" with large Japanese and Brazilian popltns, and there's real attrition happening IMO.

Still, let the protocol wars begin I suppose?

Every now and then I hear conversations from outside of here about "the state of social media" and let me tell you: People are suffering. People are miserable. Many people feel addicted to social media but unable to have positive and valuable interactions in the space. Mostly, in the profit-driven social media space negative emotional reactions glue eyeballs as well as positive, so a heap of the experiences is just ... unpleasant.
