Today was a huge milestone in our quest to federate #Flipboard and tear down the walls around our own walled garden.

First, we launched a new version of Flipboard for iOS and Android which brings the promise of two way federation to life. Now when a federated Flipboard user curates, people in the fediverse can reply, favorite, boost or follow those Flipboard users who will in turn see that activity in their usual notifications tab. Even better, Flipboard users can directly reply to people in the fediverse -- and very soon they will also be able to follow each other.

Second, we federated some of our best curators today who are actively curating more than 10,000 magazines about everything from climate change to kale smoothie recipes. I'm grateful to our many curators and the service they provide to so many others who want to find the best content about a shared interest. I know our curators are excited to have millions more people who could potentially benefit from their curation. I also know that people in the fediverse will give a warm welcome to these curators. Especially now that everyone can hear and talk to each other over what was once two totally separate networks but now increasingly are in one and the same #fediverse.

@bart Thanks Bart! I always recommend Mammoth to people who want to see what their newly federated account looks like in Mastodon. You guys have done a great job.

@evan Thanks for what you helped create, Evan. Truly amazing to see it actually working.

@dansup Thanks Dan! Next up is finishing our #activitypub integration such that all Flipboard users can follow anyone on Pixelfed. I can't wait to feature your best users to ours.

@mpesce Thanks man!!!

@zdl @zdl I really appreciate your concerns here. Frankly, our Flipboard TOS are overly broad and conservative. They are also primarily driven by our current integration with Google ad manager which is no different than any other app or publisher who runs ads these days. I hate it and we are working to change this ASAP.

But in the meantime I can personally assure you that we A) never sell user data to anyone B) we never collect data for non-flipboard users C) location data is only used when volunteered by users in order to find local news/events nearby and D) any data we have from existing flipboard users is treated with the highest level of respect and confidentiality.

It's our user's data. Not ours. We're privileged to serve our users and we will continue to uphold their privacy no matter what. We'll do our best to make this a lot more clear in the Flipboard TOS soon.

@RubyTuesdayDONO Hah. I so appreciate that Jobu. I too have been on the receiving end of that same double-speak you speak of and it sucks.

Building a business unfortunately comes with lots of complex CYA language from well intentioned (and well paid!) attorneys. Figuring out how to moderate all that and balance the real risks vs the made up risks is hard but important, especially now that some companies have totally taken advantage of their users' trust by hiding behind a lot of that same language.

I hope we can do better and set a higher bar for other companies who come to the fediverse.

@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@onnob I love hearing that.

What do you think we could have done differently to have gotten you more into it? I love hearing this kind of feedback... especially now.

@atomicpoet Even worse is when any video game requires you to create an account first.

On a post that has absolutely NOTHING to do with this, two people have been arguing in my comments for three days about whether spreadsheets are databases. The thread is now almost 50 comments.

@cfiesler hah. People used to use Lotus 1.2.3 as a word processor. “That letter I wrote is at AA 55”

@bkim @cfiesler not really :-)

So much energy going into AI chatbots. I'm curious what you think. Do you find AI chatbots useful? Are they useful enough that you are willing to pay to use them? Or do you think they are over hyped and not useful to you at all?

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@toolbear Fair enough. I'm just personally curious what people think about this. I don't see a lot of usefulness to AI chatbots but maybe I'm missing something...

mike,

@toolbear hah!

I swear, we are still talking about this platform stuff all wrong. There is absolutely no comparison between my mastodon engagements and those anywhere else. People here are just far more interested in engaging people and ideas than any other site where the biggest activity seems to be following celebrity accounts and popular influencers discussing very little. It’s a completely different kind of experience.

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@MissTakenLee @shoq well said Shoq. So true. I learn so much from the conversations here.

Welcome to the fediverse MissTakenLee!

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@shoq @MissTakenLee Totally. The people are the point. The tech needs to be in service to the community rather than the other way around. I think this is what Elon and others often fail to understand.

Hypothetically speaking, if #Trump wins the next presidential elections, would his team use #Threads and so the #fediverse to make his political tweets but on the fediverse?

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@lumaa that could happen. But Trump would likely be treated the same way as other toxic people in the fediverse. I.e. Lots of people would block his account and many instance owners would likely block the account as well because his posts violate most instance’s ground rules.

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@eatyourglory @lumaa you could block any account yourself at anytime. Your instance owner could also make their own decision but I suspect most instances would almost instantly block trump given his proven toxicity and threats. For example I can assure you that we would block trump on Flipboard.social even if he became potus again.

Exactly what @Gargron says!

Governments should not rely on Threads for connecting to the Fediverse. It would be far better for them to run on their own servers. Ideally, I’d prefer to follow @potus (which doesn’t exist right now) than @potus.

But last week, Joe Biden was not on the Fediverse. Now he is. This is a huge win and will result in further migration here.

This is neither ideal nor perfect – but it’s better than it was last week.

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@atomicpoet @Gargron exactly. I think the future for both governments and organizations is running an instance, similar to running a website. It’s already started to happen in the EU. These will soon be followable in Threads as well as any other activitypub app. We need products and services for making this more manageable. I.e. we need something like Wordpress or Squarespace for the #activitypub so orgs can readily build and manage instances on the social web.

Yesterday morning I was flipping through my Mastodon timeline via Flipboard and I saw a post from @gtconway3.

@tchambers had boosted George's post using whatever app Tim likes to use to these days (I suspect @phanpy though it could just as easily have been the native Mastodon app, @mammoth, @ivory, or @IceCubesApp)

I tapped on George's profile and saw he was posting from #Threads. I tapped the follow button and now I see his latest posts in Mastodon and Flipboard.

There's a whole new array of apps, people and posts in the fediverse and it all just works. It's wonderful.

#Fediverse FTW.
