Matrix is an open protocol for decentralised, secure communications. The Matrix.org Foundation exists to act as a neutral custodian for Matrix and to nurture it as efficiently as possible as a single unfragmented standard.

Welcome to the first ever Governing Board election season for the Foundation 🗳

We start with a one week nomination period that opens this Saturday. Read our blog post for a full schedule, details on who can nominate, who can vote, and how to prepare yourself: https://matrix.org/blog/2024/04/election-announcement/

@oceane @kde @kde You can learn some more about the relationship between the two in this blog post from our Managing Director: https://matrix.org/blog/2023/10/26/hello-world/

New Vector/Element does have outsized influence as the company founded by folks who created Matrix, and as the #1 contributor to upstream, but the Foundation's job is to be vendor neutral and a fiercely independent steward as one would hope to see with any FOSS foundation.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have.

We are thrilled to welcome @gnome and @kde who, like @EclipseFdn, have joined us as Associate Members 🚀

Associate Members are FOSS foundations, nonprofits, and other communities that share our values, such as: software freedom, open source, open standards, privacy, and decentralization.

Like our other members, we have allocated several seats on our Governing Board for Associate Members, and they get to be part of how Matrix is governed.

@lo__ No worries! Beeper, like other members, is eligible to nominate and vote in our Governing Board elections but we haven't held those yet. Our first election season is this April-June, with nomination period beginning next Saturday.

mttaggart, to Matrix

So I'm just a few days into running my #Matrix server, and I have to say that doing any kind of public server that requires moderation seems like a very half-baked proposition right now.

Using any kind of bot for moderation—the only real option because bans do not propagate to all rooms in a "space,"—requires an encryption hall pass proxy that hasn't seen a commit in almost a year, despite several bugs. That's to say nothing of the awful state of documentation.

I'm soldiering on, but this is some classic open source nonsense. "Leave the easy proprietary platforms and just host your own thing! Here's no help at all, also this and that don't work. RTFM! Except the TFM isn't finished."

matrix,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@mttaggart We're glad you're giving it a try!

Yes, the state of trust & safety for homeserver admins is lacking. This is something the Foundation is prioritizing this year, both by investing in FOSS tooling, proposing supportive spec change, and convening stakeholders who work on this from across the ecosystem.

We'll be sharing more about this specifically on our blog in the next few weeks.

Please continue to be vocal about your experience, it helps us target our efforts!

Open source infrastructure must be a publicly funded service, and funders need to support maintenance – not just new feature development 📣

This is on our minds this week in the wake of the #xz news, and as we continue to seek funding to support #Matrix.

I'll repeat my old take on #matrix, #XMPP and #IRC chat protocols.

These protocols are open, thus there is no reason to not make them interoperable.

In the end users dont care about protocol, they care about client. And users can choose any client they wish.

If all three can be seamlessly talk to each other, we'll have beautiful solution.

Even better if it can be done without bridges (or the bridges are built in to clients/protocols)

Instead of fighting over "the one true protocol" we should make them as seamlessly interoperable as possible!

We have zero excuse. These three (and probably more!) are all open.

I would love to help as well.

#FOSS

matrix,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@aks @xmpp We are all in on interoperability.

We are far less worried about Matrix vs XMPP than we are about open and decentralized vs closed and centralized. We have far more in common than not.

Hey @matrix and @austin do you (or anyone) know if there's a general purpose Matrix community forum? The sort of place we can get help triaging problems with apps without bothering the devs with a plethora of issue tickets that turn out to be fixable at our end.

#Matrix

matrix,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@strypey @austin Oh yes, absolutely. There have been some efforts along those lines in the past, but there were challenges resourcing it. Provided we are able to address our funding challenges, picking something like this up could well end up on our 2025 roadmap!
