What’s your favorite bell pepper? And, no, they don’t all taste the same.

@CStamp I love them fried with rice, tofu, and other veggies. My daughter loves just munching on them. Not a huge fan of that myself. But they’re nice raw on a bagel.

@lisamaesie yeah, they’re not for everyone. A friend of mine calls them “flavor stealers.” 😂

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I want to recommend Japanese-American Kishi Bashi’s song film “Omoiyari.”

It’s described as “a musical journey to understand WWII era Japanese Incarceration, assimilation, and what it means to be a minority in America today.”

The film is streaming on Paramount+ and the record is available on most platforms. Both are amazing.

@ivory If I may provide some input for your awesome app:

The information I am missing most from the profile view is the profile creation date. This field is essential for me when evaluating whether a new follower is a legitimate person, or one of those newly created profiles which Russia uses to influence the opinion.

If the profile is less than a week old, that becomes part of my evaluation of the profile’s legitimace. On the other hand, three year old profiles are almost never spammers.

markwyner,
@markwyner@mas.to avatar

@ivory @randahl @shellsharks that’s a bold statement. Do you have usability research that backs up “most people” and “definitely”? As a veteran UX designer, researcher, and usability test participant for Mastodon I question this position. At the very least, it would behoove you to reply with curiosity and empathy for the people paying for your product.

markwyner,
@markwyner@mas.to avatar

@randahl @ivory there are a number of usability issues with Ivory. Don’t get me wrong, I love so much about it. But there are deficiencies. I’ve conducted usability research on the most popular Mastodon apps, and this date feature is one that got mentioned a lot. I reached out to them about some of these (once about the creation date), being a paying customer myself, and their responses are typically defensive and dismissive. I don’t think they’re bad people. Their app just needs a little work.

markwyner,
@markwyner@mas.to avatar

@CStamp @ivory @randahl you’re definitely not alone not alone, Carolyn. This is important to lots of folks using Mastodon. Twitter even features this on their profiles. It’s important information that people want.

As an aside, as a Mastodon moderator it’s even more important. We have this information available to us in the admin UI, but we’re often following trails through live accounts. Having it there is super helpful.

Got my Big|Brave vinyl for “A Chaos of Flowers,” my favorite record of 2024. It’s so beautiful.

The lyrics are quite powerful. They’re themed on the internal/external manifestations of marginalization. Five songs were written by female poets, all of whom were activists for women, people of color, and indigenous people: Emily Dickinson, Akiko Yosano, Renée Vivien, Esther Popel, and Tekahionwake (links in thread).

Does anyone else have that song that you have to listen to all the way through when it comes on, even though you've heard it literally hundreds of times and kinda don't have time to finish listening to it but you do anyway because it's so friggin good? This one is mine, feel free to share yours below. :ablobjam:

@buffyleigh there are quite literally hundreds of answers to this question. The one that maybe stands out for me is “Djougo Toro,” by Air Volta. It’s soul haunting.

@buffyleigh and there’s a magnificent story in it as well.

In the 60s/70s there was a whole scene of great music in Burkina Faso on the west coast of Africa. After being colonized by France, they gained their independence in 1960. The music explosion there was a complex blend of many genres from many areas of the world. I feel like it was one giant organic celebration, and a gateway to the rest of the world.

Emotional/mental decay from an aggregate of universal suffering. Especially, that it seems irreparable.

https://markwyner.medium.com/how-are-you-doing-is-a-trigger-41b34b15a3d9

Coping: lap dogs, therapy, music, meditation, whiskey, sugar, streaming shows with my wife, dad jokes, and gaming. Mental health medications are on the way.

If it weren’t for the aforementioned list I wouldn’t survive. Those things enable me to smile, laugh, and love here and there.

P.S. this thread is validating and humbling. Thanks for putting it into the world.

You may be privy to or unfamiliar with how the ultra-wealthy are taking advantage of the system. Either way, you’ll find this report by @ProPublica to be staggering. The facts are clear: there is a class war, and we’re losing.

“…it demolishes the cornerstone myth of the American tax system: that everyone pays their fair share and the richest Americans pay the most.”

What it is, actually, is compassion for people who are suffering physical and emotional violence on a massive scale.

While there are many things in life that I care about, the one thing that truly matters is how we treat each other.

If we change nothing more than the self-serving apathy that runs rampant throughout all of our societies, we level up in an indescribable way. The impact would be unfathomable.

Love, kindness, and compassion are literally all we need to change the course of our species and our planet.

@Furthering I think it’s a primal need for survival. Self preservation means survival. Logical thinking evolves that. But we think like animals.

I don’t know if I’m right, but that feels accurate to me. With love, kindness, and compassion, every bias and prejudice goes away. Everyone eats. No one inflicts violence, physical or emotional. It sounds oversimplified, but it isn’t.

Also, I don’t believe it’s possible. I’m just saying it’s desirable. I’m so exhausted with the apathy and the hate.

markwyner,
@markwyner@mas.to avatar

@Furthering thanks. I appreciate your meaningful thoughts on this. I definitely agree.

Hopefully a ripple effect from some people showing kindness is enough to move the needle.
