What's your pet hate in UX design?

Mine is right-click menu that lengthen then reposition itself after a second.

Yes I am looking at you Safari.

a demo of safari's right click menu where "copy subject" will pop up and reposition the whole menu after a second.

@bitinn oh yeah, anytime shit moves around with a delay like that oooof

Was using the camera2d to do the zoom, but font looks waaaay better if you set the scaling under Window (where you can set the resolution) in the project settings.

    What's the decent free video editor these days? I just need to clip video game footage and do some voiceover, basic shit.

    Googling it is not terribly helpful these days. The AIs have agreed lists are great, but they don't care about the content.

    Yes, money can buy happiness, beyond 75K$. Probably. Depends.

    @dneto I gotta imagine by the point you're making that much pretty much everyone who knows what you make will never be genuine friends unless they knew you before you blew up and you would just turn into another psychopath millionaire defending billionaires on your way to world domination and misery.

    But shit, I guess there's only one way to find out lol

    I'm so glad despite the technological advancements physical books are still alive and well. physical videogames seem to be going the extinction road

    ludoloon,
    @ludoloon@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @djlink to be fair a physical book can last millennia

    Even optimistically most physical digital media is lucky to make it multiple decades. Plus if it's not something like a console game that has a specific hardware to emulate then good luck getting old PC stuff to work without some labor of love to get it running again.

    Not to say it's impossible but the preservation premium is higher.

    Here is my take on the latest Unity self-inflicted harm episode:

    • For the whole duration, neither CEO nor CTO stepped in to explain the change.

    • Only senior employees on forum and division heads to address media.

    • But you know the executive team and board of directors are directly responsible for this decision.

    • Community backlash caused enough damage on stock price and future prospects.

    • Enables lower leadership team to advance a more reasonable proposal.

    Idk man instead of constantly changing the rules in hospitals about whether or not masking is required and confusing the shit out of people why not just do the easy thing that protects patients and require them forever. Then nobody ever has to wonder or get confused. They can just be like "oh, going to the hospital, better bring a mask"

    ludoloon,
    @ludoloon@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    Daily reminder to read whatever your logs are cause I guess my raspberry pi power supply must be going out.

    Getting some undervoltage warnings and that started 4 days ago. Would have never known if I didn't check and probably been like wtf is wrong when it inevitably shits the bed.

    ludoloon,
    @ludoloon@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    On linux systems they can be found under /var/log/

    I found out from syslog, but there's a lot of logs in there to check per application.

    Who knows, might not be the PSU itself, could be some other factor (like the insane heat), but at least I've got an indication to start looking into it.

    ludoloon,
    @ludoloon@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    Ok, replaced the PSU with the original (other one came with my case) and so far no warnings so that was hopefully it.

    And this is why we run linux folks lol

    ludoloon,
    @ludoloon@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    probably not a bad time to look into RAID so next time I can validate that I didn't write any bad data while it was undervolted lol

    But also got other shit to do today so I guess we'll just put that off and call a 5 minute disruption a win for the day.

    Reminds me how the SSD for my /home partition for my desktop would randomly need me to run fsck on boot up every so often and then my SSD decided to shit out one day.

    Went like that for a year or so before it happened, and luckily I keep good backups but that would've been so much easier to deal with if I could've just imaged a still working drive by listening when I was getting warnings.

    To be fair, I didn't even know that was a sign of SSD failure lol

    ludoloon,
    @ludoloon@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    Last update: noticing that now the swap isn't being used (as intended), and when it was failing the swap was getting used even though the RAM wasn't full. I have it set to a swappiness of 10 so it shouldn't be unless absolutely necessary.

    Not sure if that has anything to do with anything, but definitely curious if that was related.

    Regardless, looks like it's officially fixed and the logs support that.

    ludoloon,
    @ludoloon@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @AngryAnt Yeah I'm assuming it wasn't related, probably just has more to do with the fact that I restarted and everything was reset.

    Thanks for the tip.

    in case you're making a volume slider, don't forget:
    db is log10(sliderValue)*20.0

    don't be a chump and linear interpolate.

    Kinda funny to me that people are desperately hoping to find more reach by hopping on a closed invite only beta service that I can't even see people's posts from unless I have an account lol

    It works to keep the hype train going I guess, but idk just not super convincing that people are gonna find what they're looking for there.

    Just saw someone advocating progressive movements organize on the Fediverse.

    BE VERY VERY CAREFUL ABOUT SAYING STUFF LIKE THIS.

    -Most fediverse tie-ins are not architected to protect you. For instance, Mastodon Direct Messages are not encrypted and admins can access them.

    -Most instances are hosted by ordinary people who don't have the time, knowledge, or resources to fight subpoenas in either criminal or civil actions.

    Meet here. Support each other. Cheer each other on. Show solidarity, and elevate and amplify each other.

    Organize in much more restricted environments, like end-to-end encrypted messengers like Signal.

    ludoloon,
    @ludoloon@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @neurovagrant Yeah same, I was previously on it but took a break. Now that the mainstream social media has collapsed it's much more appealing here lol.
