My goal was to share with you random DOS games that The Script™ picks from a pool of about 17000 games and describe them as best I can in about 420 characters.

There will be times when I get to play a few terrible games in a row but it's an honest sample of what was available on the most prolific, most open platform at the time.

Please share your memories of any games you recognize!

I completely forgot I uploaded VistaPro 3.20 (the scenery renderer) to the Internet Archive, where you can run it from your browser. For those sudden urges of wanting to create some landscapes.

https://archive.org/details/vistapro320

Includes the MakePath tool.

Don't forget to take screenshots of your creations! Nothing can be retrieved from the disk the in-browser DOSBox keeps, as far as I know.

(Please be patient with the Archive's speed, they're dealing with persistent DDoS attacks at the moment)

@kiwa Wonder what the intended use was for that, next to making you look really cool.

Does the driver allow you to create "hot zones" that do something when you double tap that area? Then that display could show some icons.

Observations, medication day #5. Something kicked into high gear and I am awestruck again. What is this amazingness. Control over hyperfocus; control starting, stopping, and moving to whatever needs it.

I'm back to having no words.

I still tend to babble irl, I chatterbox constantly at to and with coworkers.

(If you mix equal parts ryan reynolds and she-hulk together and pour out a slightly less clever git you'd have me.)

Kind of surprised that hasn't stopped but I'm OK with that.

One of the people who helped archive the MS-DOS 4.0 source code, @starfrost, started writing an extensive and interesting story about the history behind 4.0 and the archived Multitasking DOS (MT-DOS) builds: https://starfrost.net/blog/001-mdos4-part-1/index.html

(the page didn't render well on mobile for me but it can be fixed by switching to "Reader view" in Firefox)

Some landscape renders made with Bryce 3D come by on Mastodon this week and it reminded me of the first landscape renderer I used: VistaPro.

It was was one of many #DOS programs on the "Virtual Reality Madness" compilation disc from 1993. VistaPro also came out on Amiga and Mac OS, and later Windows.

VistaPro (v1.01) didn't give you much control but the results looked stunning then, if you allowed your computer to render the highest quality image for a few hours that is.

Lowest quality render. Useful for positioning the camera and checking the lighting.
Higher quality render: more polygons and enabled (oak) trees. Trees can easily block the camera.
Highest quality render at 1024x768 with maximum polygons, Gouraud shading and texture blending.

loadhigh,
@loadhigh@bitbang.social avatar

A video showing the rendering process for the final image.

One reason why it takes so long (relatively, this is on DOSBox at maximum speed) is because the program doesn't do any culling, so it spends a lot of time rendering terrain and trees that will be hidden by something in the foreground later.

More or less the same scene in VistaPro 3.20 at 1280x1024(!).

The trees especially got an upgrade, with a full bush of detailed leaves when set to the "ultra-high" setting.

When supernatural urban fantasy film "Night Watch" (2004) was released outside of Russia, a new version was produced. An inferior one, imo. Since then the "International" version became the one distributed across all formats, and the original 115 min cut became confined to a DVD released only in Russia.

Now you can find a direct stream copy of the DVD together with official English subtitles in an MKV here: https://archive.org/details/night-watch-2004-original

Comprehensive version comparison: https://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=2891

@dosnostalgic It would be interesting to watch it again, I totally forgot what happened.

The sequel (Day Watch) stuck with me more but only because it was so weird. I remember a giant ferris wheel rolling through a city and a very important, magical chalk that turned out to be used to write down the soup of the day or something at a restaurant.

I always had trouble skipping the "In the beginning" intro of Civilization 1 and the ship departure scene of the original Colonization, because it seemed random when they would finally accept my Escape press or mouse click.

Turns out the procedural world generation is done during those intros!

So the faster your system is (or the higher your cycles in DOSBox) the sooner that process is done and you're able to skip the intro.

@loadhigh@bitbang.social avatar

@thevglibrary I'm finding myself in a Civilization mood and I would love to read "Civilization or Rome on 640K a Day" but unlike many of Prima's books I can't find a trace of it online, even physical copies are scarce on the usual second hand sites.

Do you have an idea where I could find it digitally or physically (preferably from within Europe)?

loadhigh,
@loadhigh@bitbang.social avatar

@thevglibrary Nice! It's in very good condition.

The one I ordered has been sent but might still take two weeks to arrive. No idea why it takes so long but they did say it would take a while when I bought it, so it's all good.

@thevglibrary It's here! Some worn edges but otherwise in great condition.
