Trying an Amish method of sunflower seed saving. Once florets start to fall off & head droops, the seeds are viable. The goal is to dry out of the reach of birds, bugs, and more. Cut, remove leaves, brush off florets, hang upside down with twine. Hang in home, shed, barn, or other protected structure. Once the heads are fully dry, I’ll shake seeds out & move them to envelopes for long term cool, dry storage. #Seeds #Gardening

Photo of one sunflower head with the florets brushed off. Many white shiny seeds remain in face.
Two sunflower heads with florets cleaned off. Ready to hang upside down. One face has lost some seeds to birds.

Nature likes surprises & diversity. This sunflower plant may have more than one flower head. That’s different from its parent and the other 40+ seedling siblings. All of them are single head. #gardening #flower #farming

This main head of sunflower opened today. It may be the result of cross pollination. Last year, I grew mammoth and black oil at the same time. This plant came from the mammoth seeds I harvested. #Flowers #Seeds #Gardening #Farming

I just read an article about all the diseases taking hold because of climate change disasters, like flooding. PLEASE THANK BIG OIL FOR ALL RESURGENT DISEASE.

@StillIRise1963 Yes. I just read a report out of Australia about big oil and health. Well researched and included countries from around the world, including US.

Do you grow squash, pumpkins, and other gourds?

Check out this resource guide from Lopez Uribe Lab at Penn State Extension. 16 pages on behavior, nesting, managing crop fields, references, and more.

I came across it while trying to identify this adorable wild bee in my acorn squash blossoms this morning. It looks like it has a tiny white heart on its face. #bees #pollinators #gardening #Farming

@ai6yr I did not know burning man was a nonprofit. I checked their last 990 (2021). Quite a few staffers are 6 figures. ED was north of 325K. https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/452638273

@__josh @ai6yr I was thinking more along the line of won’t someone earning 6 figs be thinking about public welfare at the event? I thought civic responsibility was one of their pillars.

kellyromanych,
@kellyromanych@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr @__josh I wonder how their board discussed risk, insurance, and crisis comms.

Very early pick your own #roma #tomatoes. Making tomato sauce today. Notable: the first year I did not hear any Italian bring spoken. I wonder if the older generation skipped this year.

thought through my head recently: what to use or make which is minimally scented... as a I find are extremely sensitive to perfumes in hair/soaps/etc. and it's better to minimize scented soaps, etc. The "whatever random stuff is on sale" default here (I am not the shopper, typically) is not ideal. (Update: Looks like I am going to try to make Castile soap, which is made out of olive oil. I have all the supplies and ingredients needed here, LOL).

Mystery angry stinging #insect the dog was going to eat. Any id? #mystery #bug (update: probably a male carpenter bee, immature)

kellyromanych,
@kellyromanych@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr hard to tell from pic. If it was a male carpenter bee, they don’t sting. They look like golden flying teddy bears. About the size of a peanut in the shell.

kellyromanych,
@kellyromanych@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr I can imagine! They are said to put up quite a display to scare others away. What a dog you’ve got there ;)

You can help crowdsource weather at ground level in your community.

The NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory has an app called mPING. You can report anonymously. Reports are immediately archived to database at The University of Oklahoma. Maps are accessible to anyone.

More Storm Hilary prep for wind and rain. Today, strategic pruning peach tree and Zinfandel tiny vineyard. Tomorrow, Zin harvest. #permaculture #farming #gardening

Several large, ripe Zin grape clusters hang beneath leaf canopy in morning sun. Each cluster has grapes of many sizes from small to large.

Follow up on Hilary Zin harvest. Tiny urban vineyard. All head trained and dry farmed. 6 pounds quickly harvested before storm. Turned into Hil Zin Jam :)

Thank goodness for the wisdom of elders and their recipe for simple refrigerator jam.

Stainless steel bowl filled with Zin grape clusters sits on top of digital scale. Scale shows just over 6 pounds.
Close up of spoonful of jam in a white bowl. Jam is different shades of purple.
