NWS forecast rainfall for Sun-Tue vs. Hurricane #Hilary Aug. 2023. Much heavier and larger 5"+ area in Los Angeles (L.A.) & Long Beach (L.B.) areas/coastal compared to Hilary. #cawx
I finally managed to put together a blog post with 15 photos of the highly unusual "second spring" of plants we're seeing on our local nature trails in Southern California:
Boulders, oaks and shrubs in warm, hazy morning sidelight. The haze was a direct result of the moisture from the rains of tropical storm Hilary that had passed through our area two days before I made this photo.
Some of our summer-dormant Southern California shrubs reacted to Hilary's precipitation quickly.
In the last couple of days I saw Mission Manzanita that already had new flowers (!), and Sugarbush and Lemonadeberry (both in the Rhus family) growing new flower buds. Needless to say that this is quite unusual for early September!
Here's a close-up of Rhus integrifolia (Lemonade Berry) leaves, wet from morning drizzle, and new buds.
Gah! Personal #Hilary damage. It turns out the waterproof box housing my #DIY retrofit electronics for an outdoor brew #fridge is Indeed waterproof.. and was full of rainwater! (Somebody had the bad idea of putting the cable entry on top... and failed to seal it!). Just burned 3 hours fixing it.
USA Today fell for the (fake/wrong) "Dodger Stadium is Flooded" social media 😬 And no correction (it was not. It was an optical illusion, a wet, black parking lot). #journalism#Dodgers#Dodger#Hilary#disinformation

If you know someone who is headed to #BurningMan pre-event, have them stay put for now. #Hilary has reactivated Lake Lahontan*
The gate will be closed all day. Everyone is being stopped in #Gerlach.
And as anyone going pre-event should already know, nothing happens during and after a rain. No driving is allowed, and walking is difficult (an inch of playa accumulates on your shoes with each step. after a dozen steps you're carrying around 5lbs of mud)
It's shaping up to be a beautiful day at #ForkedMeadow#california where it is currently 62f and the clouds have broken. There might be thunderstorms later from #Hilary but so far this storm seems to have done a lot of good for the central #Sierra where over an inch of rain fell and significantly reduced fire danger at least for a few weeks.
