Ok , you have hiccups again, after shortly being back in business this morning. Is it the Americans waking up? C'mon, this has to get better if it's going to be a real alternative in the Fedi!

Where is the equivalent to 's bell symbol next to an account? How can I make some of my followed more equal than others?

jynersolives,

@David Idk, I just want e.g. you to show up in my notifications when you post something. The only way to do that here (you can't do that) is to make a list and pin it somehwere.

jynersolives, to TwitterMigration

Ok, it seems .social is working again (and smoother than before the blackouts), will try to post more again on here. If you follow me on @jynersolives, give me a here!

Why on Earth do cryptobros think that the Fediverse would be interested in investing in them? This is so funny to me, those spambots are a huge waste of time and effort.

This is off to a promising start!

Where are #Calckey/s terms of service? I can't find 'em in the menus (maybe I'm too stupid or maybe the menus are a bit non-intuitive).

jynersolives,

@kainoa Thanks! Maybe link this somewhere under "Privacy" or "General". That would be helpful. And it could be good to have your "own" TOS, even if they're copy/paste from stop.voring.me. Just adds to credibility, I'd say. But thanks again for the quick reply!

jynersolives,

@kainoa I guess you guys are absolutely BUSY with all the new traffic!

jynersolives,

@kainoa Where's that again? 🔍

jynersolives,

@kainoa Sorry that I'm stupid but I don't find it 🙀

jynersolives,

@kainoa Ah, ok! I switched to Classic because my Macbook starts fanning like hell (it gets really hot) if I have the tab open in Deck and Default.

jynersolives,

@kainoa And switching to Classic has solved the fan/temperature problem.

Fantastic analysis of the AT protocol and what is doing! TL;DR: it's not abbreviated BS for no reason...

1950, Robert Schuman proposed to place French and West German production of coal and steel under a single authority that later became the European Coal and Steel Community. The rest, as the say, is history 😊

I disagree with the current CEO of Mastodon about his stance on mid-sized instances. We don't want to be run in isolation, we are part of the Fediverse. "Normal users just want the default", he can repeat that as many times as he wants, it doesn't make it true because of that.

Diversity is the DNA of the Fediverse and Mastodon is just one part of the whole. Thousands of people spend their time and money to make it successful. Anyone who dismisses that and single-handedly tries to market the Fediverse as a Mastodon brand and use "crowding out" techniques to prevent users from even being encouraged to choose an instance from a diversity will ultimately fail.

I am super disappointed with the direction Mastodon Corporation is taking. If there is not enough headwind here soon, then sooner or later it will lead to a schism.

jynersolives,

@louis @cbt How about calling him Eugen? The entire tone of your post was framing him as some corporate guy which he clearly isn't. And a gGmbH is not (sharholder) corporate but a non-profit limited liability company under German law.

jynersolives,

@louis Unternehmen (Company) ist die deutsche Übersetzung von Corporate. Corporate itself is no legal form but a very Anglo-oriented term that focuses on the legal personhood of a company that is constitute by two sets of contracts: corporate contracts between the legal person and the owners, employment contracts between the legal person and its employees. This legalist perspective of a company (as corporate) places all emphasis on the corporate contracts i.e. the relations to the owners. In the German legal tradition (continental, actually), the perspective is broader, it is more Unternehmen as an Enterprise of many different people contributing to its well-being and value-creation.

Anyway, the use of "Corporate" on a predominantly English-speaking platform, without any other context, is not innocent but frames everything that follows in a certain light: shareholder capitalism, profit-orientation, disregard of all interests expect the owners'.

Twitter somehow gets worse week by week--right now it is an unusable swamp of right wing conspiracy theory, wave after wave of racism (there is currently an "invasion" underway at the southern border that must be stopped by lethal force) crypto bros, and bots selling high-follower accounts. Amazing really.

jynersolives,

@GWillow @bensaufley Bluesky is not a socialist commune but a capitalist for-profit company. People seriously expect something "different" from Jack? In this economy? Anyway, I find it funny that centralist leftists think that capitalism will be any kind of refuge instead of DIY, community-supported, bottom-up federation.

Re all that talk about onboarding, UX, and stuff like that on the , especially (but also with , which is often praised as the better alternative): I really don't think that this matters so much.

Sure, Mastodon isn't the user friendliest interface of the Fedi, or the social media in general. But Calckey is only marginally better, as I've experienced using it the past few days. Don't get me wrong, I love both and depending on Calckey's development, also if there's going to be a larger German/European instance, I might make this a home in the Fedi. Just not now, Mastodon (especially if you're on a large instance like .social) has more than a hand up imo.

But this not what I want to talk about. It's about the onboarding and UX stuff that allegedly prevents people from embracing the Fedi. I think this rubbish. Even the "best" UX (best according to what?) is still part of the Fedi, a decentralised, non-commercial oriented, non algorithm-based social network of social networks. And THAT is the problem for folks imo.

We have been educated for well over a decade what social media IS: commercial, ad-based, algorithmic, focused on clout, attention, virality. NOT on building organic social relationships online. That was a nice side-effect, but the main thing was: YOU are the product, the most prized commodity, but you have to compete with other products i.e. other people for attention, clout, virality etc. in order to fill the pockets of the network owners (which were not you, but folks like Zuckerberg, Dorsey, and now Musk).

Social media culture since the late 2000s/early 2010s has changed our perception of what it means to be social online. Where we originally had social networks, those turned into social media and a business model. AND NOW the Fedi: a complete contra point to that, with a very different culture. Here it is about building organic social relations, in a non-commercial, non algorithm-based environment. And regardless how easy you make the technical onboarding process and the UX, this built-in difference, that's not just technological BUT CULTURAL, irritates people.

That's why will fail spectacularly once it truly federates i.e. once there's not just one node running AT protocol but 1000s or 10th of 1000s. The battle for the future of our social online presences is not won by building a nicer UX experience but by engaging in a war of position (Gramsci!) about what it means to be social online. So yes, it requires online activism just as much as building better interfaces. My two cents.

(Brought to you by Calckey and its 5000 word post limit 😉)

jynersolives,

@peterbutler Is that an American? That's what I (German) love about the Fedi: it's majority not US. For the first time, in a long time, I feel very much at home.

jynersolives, to random

By the way, before you assume I'm extremely serious™️ on #Calckey: please send #nudes because I have the men flu today 🤒🤧🥴

jynersolives, to fediverse

What I do like about #Calckey: not only is it able to translate posts from different languages, it recognizes which language it needs translating from. On #Mastodon, at least AFAIK, you have to specify this (as the original poster). For me as a bilingual (struggling trilingual) this is really helpful to know because I post in more than one language and love follow people who's language I'm not speaking (or in the case of my third language, Italian, speaking and understanding it rubbishly). How many of you good folks are #bilingual or #multilingual? 🇩🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇮🇹

jynersolives, to fediverse

You can "delete and edit" a post here on #Calckey, is it planned that you can just "edit" it like on #Mastodon?

jynersolives, to fediverse

#Introduction #NeuHier Testing out Calckey and see how this affects my Fediverse experience. My main account will remain with #Mastodon.social but let's see. My main interests in being online are nerd stuff and (non-US!!!) politics - I'm German after all. Love #sciencefiction both on screen and in novel form, #starwars, #doctorwho, #theexpanse and the usual stuff. Am also still (late 40s) enjoying #videogames on my #steamdeck and #xboxseriess. Lately back in #EliteDangerous o7, madly in love with #MassEffect and, to a lesser extent, #DragonAge. My politics are #green, thus my interest in #solarpunk, but I have no illusions that without some form of drastic behavior and institution change, nothing will happen – and that includes deliberate #degrowth in the global north. Anyways, nice to be "here" 👋
