jsvilliers, to history

Beneath Cappadocia, Turkey, there are around 200 underground cities, thought to date back to about 800BC.

The largest, Derinkuyu, could accommodate 20,000 people. It provided protection for thousands of years to a wide range of peoples at risk of attack or persecution, and was used as recently as the early 20th century.

A five mile tunnel linked it to another underground city, Kaymakli.

Wonderful. Seeing this I immediately hear Le Poinçonneur.

    Can someone knowledgeable help identify:
    a. The cloud formation
    b. The worrying rip in the spacetime continuum / entrance to the upside-down?

@GeekSusie love a dragon blood tree. And what a name! Like something straight out of a fantasy novel.

Hey, #WritingCommunity, I have a grammar question that research hasn't answered. Would you say, "each step takes him further away from the house" or "each step takes him farther away from the house"? #grammar

    jsvilliers,

@FayeRapoportDesPres I'd go with further, but then farther isn't commonly used in British English.

I appreciate that's not fantastically helpful, but mentioning it in case you get British people disagreeing with you!

Loving this block of flats in Darmstadt, Germany. Not just for the sloping roof garden, but the whole approach with onion domes and the painted lines and individually designed windows that create a sense of irregularity.

It's called Waldspirale ("forest spiral") and was designed by an Austrian artist, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who had a strong dislike for straight lines.

    #architecture #RoofGarden #garden #building #buildings #design #art #Germany #GermanyFotos #UrbanDesign #geography

View of the building at its tallest point, depicting the earthy tones in distinct, irregular blocks. Every window is unique and a mix of square, rectangular, circular and irregular shapes. Lines painted across the surface of the walls suggest organic, non-mathematic construction, like a colourful termite mound.

    jsvilliers,

@acute_distress Sadly I think the roof garden's closed off so presumably doesn't quite go to ground level. Still must be cool for residents enjoying the courtyard with the trees spiralling up around them.

    jsvilliers, to politics

Rewatching The Thick Of It and Malcolm Tucker just uttered the line "that's just as libelous as the Huw Edwards rumour."

16 years ahead of their time. Almost spat my cider out when I heard that.

This is Bøsdalafossur waterfall, the outlet from Sørvágsvatn lake in the Faroe Islands.

The lake sits 40m above sea level, surrounded by cliffs that hem it in, and looks for all the world like it's warped spacetime to inhabit this position.

    jsvilliers,

@onlinegoddess I'm sure you're right. We thought it was "ginas... ginas... ginas... vaaaaaaa... ginas!"

    It seemed unlikely.
