I did a little maintenance work on c14bazAAR today (https://github.com/ropensci/c14bazAAR). Among the databases it allows to download there is one called the "Radiocarbon Palaeolithic Europe Database" (https://ees.kuleuven.be/en/geography/projects/14c-palaeolithic). A little disclaimer on the website caught my attention 😢. Maybe there is somebody here working in the Palaeolithic and ready to take over this great resource.

The Journal of Archaeological Science (JAS) now does a "reproducibility review" as part of the submission process: https://www.elsevier.com/connect/how-reproducibility-is-gaining-first-class-status-in-scientific-research If your manuscript mentions using an open source programming language, it will get this review, in addition to the normal peer reviews.

A Typst template for PCI and PCJ I've put together, if it can be useful to anyone.
Maybe slightly incomplete but it's a good starting point.

https://github.com/typst/packages/tree/main/packages/preview/superb-pci/0.1.0

I've also started a Quarto template based on it but it's not ready yet.

End of march last year, Blender 3.5 was released, with its new node-based Hair System.
At the time, I was working on a seminar paper about Assyrian Beards, their depiction, changes in them over time and how they may have looked like in reality.
Using Blender's new system, I created one possible version of the style Ashurbanipal, the last great Assyrian king, is shown with, visualizing the features carved on relief as actual features of hair style.

A 21-year-old computer science student, Luke Farritor from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has emerged victorious in the Vesuvius Challenge, unlocking the mysteries of the ancient Herculaneum scrolls. These scrolls, carbonized during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, have long eluded scholars due to their fragility, but recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are bringing them to light...
