⚠️ How an empty S3 bucket can make your AWS bill explode

S3 charges you for unauthorized incoming requests, confirmed by AWS support.

I don't know if NVIDIA creating an artificial supply shortage or there is an infinite demand. GPU price increased 20-30% in the last 6 month.

Honestly the first sites that really need #ActivityPub federation are GitHub, GitLab, BitBucket and all repository sites, including self-hosted ones. Got to mass cater us developers first before the general public.

On a lesser note, I just want to star repos and they go into the same stars list. Open an issue and I can see a list of issues I reported across them all.

🔎 Mastodon full-text search released last year.

Here at toot.io we can search in 9 million remote posts using 4 GB storage, pretty amazing.

@thomas You can activate the debug logs and restart your instance:

RAILS_LOG_LEVEL=debug

Search for failed threads requests like this:

[httplog] GET https://threads.net/ap/users/17841445266116124/ completed with status code 429 in 0.48656 seconds

jan,
@jan@toot.io avatar

@darnell @thomas You can't retrieve the ActivityPub actor when threads blocks your domain/IP.

jan,
@jan@toot.io avatar

@johnclint You need to turn on sharing to the fediverse on Threads, then you can find your Threads profile on Mastodon.

@darnell @thomas

Yes the toot.io instance is blocked by threads, maybe because our public timeline was private.

No, Metalhead is not using our Mastodon hosting service.

According to the threads server guidelines it depends on the admin/moderators and how they run the instance.

We, as a hosting provider, just running the infrastructure, not managing the content or policies of each Mastodon instance.

@johnclint Currently one-way federation. Future support depends on threads roadmap.

jan,

@darnell @thomas Threads un-blocked toot.io because our timeline was private.

Understanding AP and RSS

I've been trying to figure out what ActivityPub does that RSS doesn't.

Off the top of my head, it's not the ability to syndicate, RSS already does that. I can follow anyone on any server.

I think it's the timeline? And the ability to delete posts. Keeping all that in sync is a lot of work, and presumably a lot of traffic?

Also replies. If I reply to a post when viewing it on another server, the reply should show up under any other view of that post.

What else??

jan,
@jan@toot.io avatar

@davew RSS = pull vs AP = push

jan,
@jan@toot.io avatar

@adnan @davew Delivery is mainly push to remote inbox but you can pull from remote outbox too.

I call it necessary.

It’s time Congress extended it so the 23 million households across America that rely on the program can stay connected.

The fact that you can follow the president of the United States (@potus) from your Mastodon account instead of being forced to have an X or Threads account for it is a huge W in my book. Of course our team is fully available to help if they'd want to set up Mastodon on whitehouse.gov. I believe governments should not rely on 3rd party platforms to connect with their constituents.

jan,

@jonpainterphoto @MariaLiv @Gargron We didn't defederated threads and its still not working.

@evan IMHO that on-top complexity is on purpose, because K8s is a hedge against proprietary cloud APIs and can replace the AWS stack.
