Every time I swear I’m taking my last flight on the old mad dog, somehow I find myself on one again. This time however, it’s technically a B717 (Hawaiian), newer, slower, and less comfortable than the old AA fleet.

ian,
@ian@phpc.social avatar

@josh Sitting in back, I presume? If so, I believe those are the same Acro seats Frontier used on their Airbuses when they first switched to ULCC mode in...2014 or so? With seat pitch that's almost as bad (29").

Delta's 717s are better examples, as they have normal seat pitch, so they're similar to the AA MDs but with leather seats rather than fabric. But the 717s are relegated to thinner ATL routes now IIRC so you've got a low chance of being on one (AUS-ATL is all-A321).

ian,
@ian@phpc.social avatar

@josh Last time I was on one on Delta was AUS-MSP and back in March 2019 IIRC; I think my ATL-PBI flight was for Tek 2017 as that was at the "about to be a runway" Sheraton.

Hawaiian experience was more recent (June 2021 LIH-HNL).

ian,
@ian@phpc.social avatar

@josh huh, interesting.

Guessing it was worse than Oasis/Kodiak 737s too?

ian,
@ian@phpc.social avatar

@josh Huh. Hawaiian says 37", same as AA 737s in F. Guessing thicker/worse seat rather than dimensions.

And yeah of course E75 is life. But that's not a fair fight. And the 330 is nice even in the back of the plane.

Based on flight length...Kauai? IIRC Maui is quicker than that and Big Island would be longer.

phpc.social is now on Mastodon 4.2.9, released a little over 3 hours ago. We're also taking this opportunity to run OS updates, so will have a brief blip as the server reboots shortly.

...and phpc.social is back from the reboot. Secondary queue workers needed a bit of extra nudging but are online now and queues have cleared, so y'all can return to your normally scheduled posting :)

Got this message from #slack:
> Our records indicate that your mobile device uses a mobile OS version that Slack will stop supporting after September. For the best experience and to continue receiving regular updates [..], we strongly recommend updating your mobile OS as soon as possible.

Yes, like I have a choice to upgrade from the vendor of my smartphone? (Thanks #lineageos BTW)
Or is it like forcing people to replace a working smartphone?

ian,

@thepanz LineageOS is AOSP based right?

Are you saying that LineageOS failed at, erm, providing a proper upgrade lineage?

Guarantee Slack is doing this because they want to clean up cruft in their codebase from old Android APIs that have been replaced with newer/cleaner ones (have heard this from someone else who works on Android dev, for not-Slack).

Unfortunately mobile OSes are harder to upgrade than desktop/laptop ones.

ian,
@ian@phpc.social avatar

@thepanz Have you gotten confirmation from other folks that it's too heavy for your phone model? IIRC new phones still come with 2 GB of RAM on Android 13, with bloatware, and are still okay.

'cuz, um, you sounds like someone complaining that people are making you upgrade from PHP 5.6...

Thanks to some sleuthing/fixing by @derickr (we were on a bugged ImageMagick version), if your phone was 500'ing on image uploads, that problem should be gone now on phpc.social. Please report 'em if you still see them!

@maccath@phpc.social avatar

@derickr @ramsey I get a 500 'generating thumbnail' whenever I try to upload an image attachment 😭 do you know what might be going on here?

ian,
@ian@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @maccath @GeeH The 500s aren't file size related. The thumbnail generator is tripping over something else file format wise (I posted some more details to our admin group /cc @derickr), which is probably why I haven't been able to repro when I've tried.

I now have IPv6 back on my GFiber connection, after a firmware update ~3 months ago borked things (v6 addresses were issued but failed to route).

The solution involved swapping hardware, so now my home network is running on WiFi 6E (for compatible devices) and as of tomorrow will include a 2.5GbE switch since the switch ports on the new (Actiontec) box are 1x10G 3x2.5G.

Once synced, the mesh points are rather impressive too, as they'll hit gigabit on the Ethernet side with WiFi backhaul.

I present to you the most expensive drink I’ve ever seen on a bar menu, and a whopping $690. It’s basically “jungle juice” but for rich people

ian,

Thanks to effectively tripping on a power cord, seems like my iMac's fan is now on the fritz. Fortunately I have other machines I can use, but not how I wanted to end my Sunday evening.

Oh hey, this flight has WiFi, as it's using the older Intelsat/WiFi Onboard gear, which didn't have a massive problem recently when launching, so while it's not as speedy as ViaSat it will actually work for most of this flight.

Now to resist the temptation to catch up on emails rather than doing the right thing and treating this like the redeye it is.

Goodbye Japan; it's been real.

Hopefully we'll be back here sooner rather than later, maybe to explore stuff north of Tokyo that we didn't touch this time.

Thanks to borrowing an eSIM from @zonuexe, I've now tested all four physical Japanese mobile networks, including the elusive Rakuten Mobile. My phone didn't lock onto their , but seeing on them was good enough.

That's in addition to LTE and 5G on SoftBank and NTT, plus LTE on KDDI, that I was able to source myself :)

Yep, I'm that much of a cell network nerd. Any questions?

The cost of running a Mastodon instance:

1 TB of storage (an outrageous amount of storage if you ask me) is what you need for 35 active users, and it'll cost you €14/mo at Scaleway (European cloud provider). On top of that comes €38/mo for the web server, counting in at €52/mo.

Can you imagine how expensive it gets for a popular instance?

ian,
@ian@phpc.social avatar

@thor The costs don't scale linearly. Storage requirements on the object storage side don't get all that much worse, and you can get $6/TB/mo from a few places (Vultr, Backblaze B2, Wasabi), and while there are definite breakpoints on compute costs "enough to run the Rails app that is Mastodon" scales you up a fair amount.

Is there anyone in Kobe/Osaka/Tokyo who can hook me up with a Rakuten Mobile physical or eSIM? Probably impossible since I don't have a Japanese ID card, but would be cool to test all four mobile networks here.

@nauleyco, know anyone?

@zonuexe the 6th should work. Will coordinate via direct message day-of. Thanks for your patience for this response.
